    I made my screw press adjustable by using angle iron drilled and tapped with to accept 2 5/16 bolts for stability and attached to the horizontal 2x4 housing the screw. Same as your but no need to cut a rabbit into the vertical supports or insert a nut in the horizontal. I cant attach a picture. I love your videos. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for showing your glue press design. I had developed a design of my own but compared to yours, I can see that my idea was way overkill. Your idea will save me much time and expense. Marvin

    I'm going to make a glue press myself but I think I'll use a scissor jack out of a car. You can get one at a junkyard for around $5. I know it would be easier than using a bunch of clamps. Thanks for sharing! Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Stephen, a scissor jack will work but think about a piece of all-thread which you should be able to get for about the same. You could put a nut on top and use a socket wrench to raise and lower it.
      Thanks for watching and God bless,

    That’s an ingenious press to glue wood rings together. It is small and very portable. For me, I rely on a big 20 ton press that I used in restoring and building cars for gluing wood rings together. You gave me another good idea to build one out of wood instead of making the long walk out to my car shop to the press rings together there. You’ve provided 2-3 videos in the past on making jigs that have worked well for me. Now I have one more idea. Thanks for sharing, Gary!!!

    A very well done, easy to understand video, Gary. Makes me want to build one! I did build a flower press for my wife several years ago and it's quite similar but with a captured flat plate on the hand-threaded dowel for more coverage. You don't want it or even need it for your press but it works great for flowers. I'll bet you have a lot of viewers wanting to build one of these for their segment work, which you also have a lot of folks wanting to do. Great job, professor! 😊

    I have an oversize but multipurpose press. It is the press we have had since the 1980s for pressing apples to make apple cider. I just use a piece of plywood on the bottom instead of the food safe tray we use when pressing the apples. So for anyone else also look for a used apple press since those work well and the pressure when doing that will more than hold up to using it as a glue press.

    You built that press hell-for-stout! You obviously understand how much pressure you can achieve with an inclined plane wrapped helically around an axis. :-) I haven't done any segmented or glued-up bowls yet, mostly because I still have a good supply of burls in Southeast Alaska. But when I start having to do glue-ups, I'll build a press based on your design. Thanks for the tip, Gary!

      Thank you very much Paul. I think if I had a good supply of burls I would be turning them as well.
      I do have one left that someone gave me and I am waiting for just the right time to turn it. Or how I want to cut it to get more than one turning from it actually.

    Gary, I think you left out a major advantage to the glue press. While it is easy to do glue-ups on the lathe, it means the lathe is tied up as a clamp for hours. I made one of these last year and I often use it so I can keep turning while glue dries on another project.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I will do the same when I have many rings to do. I use the lathe for BFB bowls because there are very few rings.

    Nicely done. The traditional design of a veneer press has many practical applications, not the least of which is gluing up segmented bowl layers. It equalizes clamping pressure effectively throughout the glued surfaces, which clamps often do not.

      Another thought: I didn't have any 2x4 laying around but I had plywood so I doubled the plywood and used that. On the cross piece, the face of the plywood runs in the vertical plane which made the crossbar very stiff. I think it is about 3" high.
