THIS is the new standard! Metal Vocal Coach analyzes Mental Cruelty "Nordlys".

  • Y'all. Sometimes I get tired of metal. I write it, I teach it, I make videos about it. It all gets to be a bit much. BUT MENTAL CRUELTY'S NORDLYS DID METAL CPR ON ME AND I'M ALIVE AGAIN! Seriously, what an amazing few months it has been for metal. ‪@lukas.nico_cruelty‬ vocals are INSANELY good, and this is blackened deathcore done RIGHT. I'd even say this song is almost entirely black metal, with deathcore vocals added for flavor. Either way, y'all, we need to get mental cruelty to MINIMUM 500k monthly listeners on spotify STAT.

    Mark’s commentary in this video really compelled me to leave a review. I had played with harsh vocals for a long time but I never felt comfortable doing it. Sometimes it hurt, a lot of times I couldn’t access a sound that I thought I had figured out the day before. Long story short, I had no direction and no way to know if I was ruining my vocals. After taking a few lessons with Mark, I feel so much better. I have been able to play with so many tones and styles comfortably because of his teaching. If anyone has been thinking about taking lessons, I highly recommend it

    The first two singles leaned slightly more deathcore, and this was a nice change of pace from the “black metal majority followed by a deathcore breakdown” formula (WHICH I LOVE BY THE WAY), I can’t wait for this damn album to see how they’ve expanded, because it’s already GREAT.
    So glad Lukas has restored my faith in this band.

    What I love about their "breakdown" is that they didn't go for the usual deathcore breakdown championed by Lorna. They went with a good black metal riff with the drumming and didn't have to add crazy vocals. Amazing.

    I agree, mental cruelty may be becoming my favorite Blackened Deathcore because it’s black metal…
    This band has the actual black metal sound, and the highs! I genuinely enjoy the new vocalist. Also Gorgoroth is my favorite BM band as well. But pentagram with Hat on vocals is my favorite album.

    Never been more fooled by a band's logo. They are absolutely tearing BM's boundaries to pieces; and they're not just breakdowns, either. Reminds me a bit of Blackbraid, one of my new favs. This was the first time I actually enjoyed sitting through an entire reaction video and not skipping any parts. Finally someone who knows how to sing metal--reacting to metal! You're a beast, brother. Keep it up🤘💪🍻

    I could listen to you talk about black metal all day

  • @Arternis
    @Arternis ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, it makes absolute sense! Started out slow with throat singing first (khorekteer worked pretty fast and couldn't find the kargyraa tone especially with the "clearing your throat" technique" -> so I wasn't able to get to my false cords and one day as I was just goofing around in the car I suddenly did it because I thought it maybe is just not for me). With the kargyraa approach I found my false vocal cords with a very relaxed approach and now I am working on distinguishing between my relaxed false and fry vocals and even the mixed drive.
    Love your videos and your explanations and it seems we have quiet the same taste in music styles too! Thanks Mark!

    One thing I loved about this song is the black metal “swing” they have in some sections. This is something I love. It also contrast with the wall of sound deathcore sections.
    I have a similar story for learning to make crazy sounds. I would play with my dog and growl at her. I’d watched enough of your videos to understand the principals but was always nervous because I didn’t want to hurt my voice. One day when playing rope, I growled in a way that didn’t hurt and felt like something you had described. Now I play around there- and sometimes push it a bit, but not too much!
