I really enjoyed this deeply, I was adopted, I'm in my Seventies and just found my Birth parents, Mother and Father never married each other, They were already married to someone else, Many siblings, I'm now Whole, No more guessing, No more Void in my life, I am more like my Father.
I love this movie. Cast is terrific. I was adopted by a loving family. ❤ Pat Neal never gave anything less than a superb performance. Eleanor Parker is lovely and heartfelt. Ruth Roman was an actress who deserved better material like this to shine.
❤❤Absolutely beautiful movie. The actors are amazing. Such an emotional 🥲 story. To tell a story during this time to address such a topic as this is wonderful. Thanks for sharing. Great quality film. 🎉🎉
I am stunned at the perfection of this film. Perfectly cast, incredibly intelligent script, totally unobtrusive directing so that the story was front and center, a little heavy on the music, but that makes the film’s artistic era obvious and, for me, very satisfying, time travel-wise. Altogether the excellence of this movie is timeless. Three actresses gave spectacular performances and no duds in any performance anywhere. I am 86 and from LA so i remember Bill Welsh, the radio guy. THANK YOU! I can’t get over how great this was!
In light of what is a great controversy today, life of an innocent child was deeply felt here amidst the tragic story and people doing the right thing.
The Sierre Club is actually mentioned,as one of the supporting entities in this film. A number of good character actors in this film.Thank you,for showing this film.
This is like a remake of Letter To Three Wives. Great performances by all. I've never seen this before but wondered which brunette would get bleached, Patricia got it. No way Ruth could be blonde. All of these women have such wonderful voices. Between pictures they did radio and were trained to be voice actors. That's one of the many things that make vintage film wonderful Also with some seasoned character actors, Eleanor Audley as the warden, who had a long career in TV, Arthur, Franz, Larry Keating, Ted De Corsia, Leif Erickson, Frank Lovejoy as Duffy.
After watching this to the very end I noticed somewhat of a Biblical reference. In the Bible the king, had 2 women saying a child was theirs. He said bring me a sword and each will get 1/2. The one woman said no she can have this child. The king said the woman who displayed this love for this child must be the mother. Give this child to her. As in this story the other 2 women knew the lady and her husband were better for the child and sacrifice to let her raise as her own. I really enjoyed this movie 🎥 tremendously. Thanks so much for sharing
Excellent picture. Class A. 5 Stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great story, great cast, believable characters. Very Warner Bros to tackle the then-taboo topic of unwed mothers. Story of 3 very different women, from different walks of life, & how this happened to them. 👍👍👍
One day when i was about six years old my mother was upset about something and told me that i had a brother who was older than me - This was never ever mentioned again and having been so young i never questioned it but it always stuck in my mind . I was a long awaited late baby only child . My mother died when she was 56 , Years later a little before my dad died i discreetly asked him if there had been a baby before me (thinking maybe mum had lost a baby before i arrived ) but he told me no . I came to the conclusion that my mother had gave birth to a little boy before she was married and had him adopted and later met my dad , married and had me and the little boy was a dark secret - Now nearly 60 years later i still think about this little boy and wonder if he is still alive and who and where he is
You know, I don't really like these DNA companies, but they might help you. I've heard stories of people who just did it for a lark, but found some interesting relatives. Good luck!
Do a DNA test. You might find out. I'm obsessed with the British program Long Lost Family. They help adoptees etc find their families. The stories are amazing. I hope you try and find out.

Thank you for this great video, I've liked, subscribed, and am looking forward to seeing your channel's playlists. I'm seeing this movie for the first time - it's one of the best movies I've seen in my 68 years (so few movies without super-heroes and Hollywood flash), because of my life experience. These women are what Mothers are made of. Such good Mothers - without their babies. It's such a shame there are children abused and neglected (with 'parents' like mine. I was molested, abused, and had 4 broken bones before the age of three). For 50+ years, I was an orphan with my parents still breathing. It's NEVER too late for the truth. The truth comes first and foremost - always. My son will turn 50 this year, I gave him up for adoption at birth because I wanted him to have everything I couldn't give him... a home, family, a Father. The only way I could do it, was because I gave him to God, not people. He's a fine man, we've been close since he told his folks he wanted to meet me (in the meantime, I'd contacted, and become close with his parents). I have been SO blessed - God gave him back to me... along with a Daughter-in-law, her children and grandchildren. I'm now a Great-Grandmother. There really are happy endings. This movie is a real gem, Thank You.
Interesting. The plot is different but the structure with three women and flashbacks is borrowed from “A Letter to Three Wives,” 1949. That movie won two Oscars, one for best director and one for best adapted screenplay. It was also nominated for best picture. So the formula was copied here. Wonder if other movies of the era used the same concept?
That’s what I was thinking as I watched it. Especially the Ann character, whose guy dumped her via someone else, didn’t even tell her himself, she had no idea that he was not interested. How many men had sex with women, promising marriage and a forever life together…
OMG! That was really good! It was very heart wrenching towards the end. How very difficult it must have been for a young woman back then to go through such an ordeal.
I was in similar situation, nobody was willing to help me keep her, had to quit work, my parents insurance wouldn’t cover the birth, my dad took back the car he lent me and felt broken and heartbroken. Everyone told me I was being selfish, everything was a secret. I did not get married till I was 38 and had two kids in my 40’s. Not a day went bye without tears, I checked out every kids’ face looking for resembleness… when my daughter turned 21 the adoption agency helped me with a reunion. She is now 54. Her adoptive parents died when she was in her 30’s. The birthfather looked me up when she was ten, but he was an alcoholic and never really thought about his daughter, his parents never knew because he paid for the delivery if it was kept a secret ( my dad’s deal with him.
Thank you sincerely for sharing this. You are a one brave woman for allowing the child to be born and live, despite all hardship. You did the right thing, never doubt that. Every life is extremely precious and is a gift from God.
A good watch. Some societal differences, for sure, since the time period that this film was made compared to now! Patricia Neal’s character still comes off as sympathetic, even though her husband divorces her because “She’s not a woman.” What he means is that she is a very successful journalist, that travels for work.
My aunt came to live with us for a few months in the late 1950's. I was under 5 years old and didn't know she was unwed and pregnant. She gave birth and the boy was adopted by a childless couple from our church. Years later I witnessed her meeting her son for the first time when he was in his early 20's. I couldn't believe how their mannerisms were so alike. One could tell they were related. They looked alike, acted alike, and spoke alike. She has kept in contact with him since then.
You might not realize that a marriage requires 2 people to spend their lives together. Not one of them running off for months at a time to “value her career”. Yes, sacrifices must be made. God created marriage to make us one and to raise children. NOT value a career more than that perfect plan.
I have 3 adopted daughters. By the Grace of God and by three very courageous and loving birth mothers, our children came into our lives as babies. This movie brought tears to my eyes numerous times. Adoption opens up your heart in a big way, because through the process you realize that any child could have been yours!
Great movie. I would like to think it could have had a reasonably happy outcome for Johnnie and Susan, but if it were known who the child’s real birth mother was by the adoption agency, and that it wasn’t Susan, would she have been allowed to ‘adopt’ Johnnie in real life under those circumstances?
You did what you were told. My dad said if I keep her, I could never see my grandparents again and he would take away a car he lent me and that he would take all the money I saved from my bank account as his name was also on the account and I was not 21,

she had a memorable turn as the baroness in the sound of music.
Utterly damn good story
Great performances by the best at Warners
It was a great movie
Really loved this. Top quality all the way around. Will watch again.
Extraordinary to think that in 1950, a woman like Phyl didn't deserve to keep a husband, simply because she valued her career.
Exactly. And you know that if the tables were turned, she would be expected to be proud of him, and wait dutifully at home for his brief returns.
So in 2024 we have 70% of marriages divorce because finally woman can do what SHE wants.
You might not realize that a marriage requires 2 people to spend their lives together. Not one of them running off for months at a time to “value her career”. Yes, sacrifices must be made. God created marriage to make us one and to raise children. NOT value a career more than that perfect plan.
