The young police officer was played by Andrew Ray- son of Ted Ray. He's sadly no longer with us,but was a great joy for us that he was a resident actor in our city of Hove. Always took the time to engage with members of the public. Was a regular patron of our local business. Remember him with much fondness RIP😢
Jack Hawkins, a British born actor, and this movie was a British production movie, with British English accents, a great film as most classic British films were...
Yes, but directed by John Ford. Now is that John Ford the American director or John Ford the British director? According to IMDb it was the American John Ford.
@@paulgeraghty1448 .....WRONG!! 'Ford' is an old English name meaning - 'a shallow body of water to cross'. For example, the famous university city of 'Oxford' takes its name from the river Ock - a tributary of the River Thames which runs through the historic city. Many English people took their names from their craft [trade] or location. A person who was born or grew up in a certain town or city would assume the name of that location or a well-known local landmark - eg: Bridge, Lake, Castle etc. This is why the name 'Smith' is the most common name in the English language. As mentioned, a person would adopt the name of their trade or craft - eg: Blacksmith, Silversmith, Goldsmith and so on. The name 'Cooper' [Cowper] originated from the trade of barrel-makers. No doubt, you would claim that Gary Cooper was originally an American name!
@@paulgeraghty1448 No such thing, it's a country of immigrants. Ford is a common name in both England and Ireland, meaning a place where the river is shallow enough to cross. And there is no such thing as 'British English'. Just English.
After searching for a good movie, I reluctantly clicked on this American Police movie and OH!!!! What a pleasant surprise when I saw that it was English! 🤗🤗🤗
I remember the name ‘Gideons Way’ from the tv-show, but never watched the re-runs as a Kid. I love seeing the ‘back-story’ as it were, so am looking forward to watching this AND the tv-series!
Lovely! I was only 2 years old 1958, but I guess that world is gone forever. What a wonderful film. A smile on my face all through. George reminds me of my dear friends father who was a police officer and a wonderful man.
You need to change the title or watch the film yourself. American Police Crime Film? I think not. This film is as English as it gets. Set in London with the best of English actors. Anna Massey in her film debut. Jack Hawkins, one of the finest English actors to ever walk the earth. Gideons day is a classic. There was also a TV series, Gideon's Way, from the 1960s staring another great English actor, John Gregson. It's worth seeking out on TH-cam.
You're so right about Hawkins... this old American has loved watching him since I was an eight-year-old kid awestruck by Bridge on the River Kwai showing at the Wiltern Theater (at the corner of Wilshire Blvd. and Western Ave.) in Los Angeles.
I think I can clear up the confusion over the description in the title. Given the number of guns in this 1950's movie I suspect the whole thing was set in a quiet suburb of some large American city. Hence the descriptive title used for the movie. If it was British we would have called it a flicker not a movie in those days. Then we to the pictures to watch a picture, or to the flicks to watch a flicker. So since it is a movie it must be American.
@RetroRegan Surely the British Flying Squad was know for rancid levels of curruption in this there is only one fellow who strayed. I suggest this is more evidence of it not being British.
Great movie directed by John Ford and introducing the wonderful Anna Massy. Very surprising how upset so many people are over a small, inconsequential error. Who cares if it's British or American? It's a good movie. Enjoy it.
A great British crime film. Jack Hawkins was a great British actor and made many films in his career. This is the first time I have seen this particular film though but have seen all the television series with John Gregson playing Gideon.
Superintendent/Commander George Gideon of Scotland Yard is a fictional policeman who appeared in 26 police procedural novels, 21 of which were written by John Creasey under the pseudonym J.J. Marric, and published between 1955 and 1976. Portraying Gideon as a master balancing the management of cases and the workings of law enforcement, it has been considered his "most famous police procedural series". After Creasey's death, the series was continued in five further novels by William Vivian Butler. There was also a television series in 1964, starring John Gregson.
I must say, I rather enjoyed this old film 🙈 so much in common with my life to date, is unbelievable 😳 🤔🧐🙊 The Truth always comes out in the end.. The Collective in the UK 🇬🇧 🙊
My Father was a police officer at the time when this film was made and it really was like that then, now these crimes are happening all the time and the using of dope is out of control and its all getting worse . Sad times !
It should all be legalised and administrated by a doctor like they do with methadone. Too many other organisations making too much money on the back of addiction.
Blimey, that was some sound stage, looked just like the real city of London - complete with a flowing River Thames. Oh wait it was London ! Silly me believed the title of this video 😂
Also the 1938 rolling stock on the underground. That continued in use until 1989 and then was sold to the Isle of Wight Railway where it remained in use until 2021!
I simply luv Jack Hawkins, (Double Headed Spy, etc.) no matter what he played in... This film I watch everytime I'm given the chance. Thank You for uploading this Gr8t film + the Eng speaking Language Subtitles 4Us hard-of-hearing/handicapped older peeps. ;-o)) Keep up the good work & have a grand day/nite wherever you may be.
Among the finest British screen actors! I cannot forget Hawkins in Bridge on the River Kwai ("I know how you feel, but there's always the unexpected, isn't there?") and Lawrence of Arabia ("That's to be expected.") And I loved his role as the Roman admiral in Ben-Hur ("You are all condemned men. We keep you alive to serve this ship. So row well, and live!") 👍👍👍👍👍
@johnc2438 Jack Hawkins has played in so many films it's hard to keep track of all them that he's in. ♡'s & ☆'s 4-Ever Jack Hawkins... a silver-screen hero & legendary household name in Classics. ThnX for the super Gr8t list. ♡
It's Ronald Howard (not Opie) and H. Marion Crawford REUNITED in this Gideon Feature Film!!! They were Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, on THEIR OWN TV Series!!!!!!!!!!
Superb film and reminded me of what Britain was like long ago. Pity we cannot take back the clock. On a more mundane aspect list it as an English film and not American. There is a great deal of difference. But thanks for posting.
I think after the war it was quite common for demobbed army officers from the upper classes to join the police because jobs were scarce. Also, men who had served in Imperial police forces (which was always an upper class occupation as well) when those countries became independent sometimes joined the British police on returning home.
In the 1950s London if a maniac killer calls at your door you invite them in for a cuppa tea and leave a young lady upstairs with them while you pop down the local shops. Makes you wonder how anyone in London survived such customs. The British have always been known for their friendliness.:)
I think the man was known as a former lodger in the house (which is why he's called uncle) but the woman didn't know he had been in a mental hospital - he just says he'd been in hospital.
Ronald Howard, the artist/thief, son of Leslie Howard played Sherlock Holmes in the television series opposite Howard Marion-Crawford who plays the Chief's Watson
Gideon's Way (Gideon CID - US Title) starred John Gregson and Alexander Davion. It was a Baker/Berman production made at the same time as The Saint and first broadcast in 1964.
Don't people get when movie names are changed or dropped it's because creators are trying to get around copywrite laws to give us movies as cheaply as possible?
I find the number of ads crazy, I presume it's TH-cam trying to get as many viewers to pay them subscription to block them. They do seem to be getting more frequent.
Not the full movie. I alwsys check running time on Google before watching any movies on TH-cam. Running time is 1 hour 58 minutes. Why post it if it's not the full movie ??????????
When all the Characters, story and sequence with the Beautiful Views of London City so how it could be a American Police Crime Story and beside that the storyline started with the Confession of saying it's World's Best Detective Agency Scottland Yard, so it's absolutely absurd which is the Caption saying.
Seriously lame bit of trivia! - the Wolseley 6/90 police car XPC 898 at 45:38 and several other points in the film must have been a studio car - it crops in many films of this era including and up to The Wrong Arm of the Law (1963) - that's it - anorak back on and I'm off!😄
One of the best films I've seen in ages. Not predictable and well-paced. No tired, American cliches
That's why I prefer British films
That is because it is British . Not American.
I am an American citizen, who loves BBC movies, absolutely and forever, this movie with Mr Hawkins and cast is excellent.thank you
Why say a American citizen?just say i am an American!
Sound nit sou dumb
@sjefhendrickx2257 Bwee thwang doc goop.
yes this is british
@sjefhendrickx2257 Could be that she's proud to be an American Citizen. Don't think she's dumb...
BBC?
A fantastic BRITISH police crime film. Excellent acting with just the right amount of humour.
True, the film in almost everyway was a British film but Columbia pictures did the financing.
With an MPAA stamp (motion picture association of america), an american director; let's say it was a multinational film and enjoy it.

watch the league of gentleman, the long arm, 2 great films

The days when policemen went to Harrow, by the look of that tie!

Why does the title say American this movie is in England?
This is a British police drama - filmed in London - with British actors -
Anna Massey is so cute in this classic she plays an atractive vampire in one of the hammer productions.
It’s not a American crime drama it’s British. Only the director was Irish American- John Ford .
Ronald Howard, the artist/thief, son of Leslie Howard played Sherlock Holmes in the television series opposite Howard Marion-Crawford who plays the Chief's Watson
