Thankyou again Joy. I am 70 ys old ( my teacher is 90) and just learning the 3rd position, so have a way to go yet before the intermediate level. Great to know what's ahead. Love playing my violin every day and love your tips.
I have been self teaching myself for 4 years now, I never had the option to go to a luthier. I had to learn how to change my own strings and what not, luckily I started with a super cheap violin. I turn 30 this year, my husband gifted me my first antique intermediate violin. :D It's Official!! I also want to thank you so much Joy, your videos help me a lot!
Thank you Joy for making this video! I was really expecting this serie. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! You have no idea how usefull it Is for many of us around the world.
Thank you for the this video. I have been playing for over a year and taking care of the violin was one of the many first things I learned...Self maintenance saves money!! I have to confess I am not a fan of a bouncing bow because it is very easy to loose control; I never over tighten my bow and it still creates great sound!

Thank you for sharing your techniques and knowledge!!! I have been recently wanting to get back into playing the violin and this video has been really helpfully! Thanks 🙏
Hi Dayne, thanks for your kind words. Staying relaxed during the challenging techniques is one of the hardest thing to master for all of us for sure. Often we tend to use more muscles than necessary because the small muscles are not well trained/prepared yet to move with efficiency. There are many great work one can do to improve. Here are some videos which might give you some ideas. @@JoyLeeViolin Thank you, Joy! I will check the link you provided here.! I have actually applied some bowing information and ideas you give and already I feel a difference in my bowarm and bow hold! BTW, I was wondering if you are based in NYC? You are a wonderful player and teacher!
Dear Dayne, you're very welcome and thank you very much also for your kind comments. I am in the same time zone as New York, but I am based in Toronto, Canada. Happy practising Dayne!
Dear Odd, there are lot of similarities in violin and viola playing and that is why there are many musicians who play both instruments including myself. I think you could benefit from both instructions from myself on the violin and other wonderful viola instructor(s), as every teacher would have something special to offer. I wish you lots of wonderful music making!
Thanks for all the wonderful lessons and advice. I'm a beginner (4 days so far, but i've played guitar for many years)...I noticed that you often choke up on the bow (middle and ring fingers not on the frog but slid up on the bow some)... is that because you have short arms? or is there some other reason? For me it seems i run out of arm sometimes when doing long bows on the G string and was wondering if maybe I should also choke up on the bow some. Thanks :)
I like to have a bow grip where it gives me the most control over the bow stick. and that's how I ended up having such a bow grip. Violinists with shorter arms might have to move the bow slightly when near the tip in order to use the whole bow, but the bow grip itself remains somewhat same for most of violinists regardless of the length of their arms.
What does choke up on the bow mean, I don't understand the term.. Does it mean running out of bow when the note should be played for longer? Or something else. Thank you. 🙋 PS joy & Katie, iv got small arms too. 😂
Excelent video Joy, very useful..but i have two problems...whether im playing vibrato or not with a downbow especially on high positions it bounces a lot..and my vibrato while playing downbow it doesnt sound as clear as doing it with an upbow...ill be very greatful if you can help me
If you were playing in high positions on E string, it might have to do with the angle of the violin. Try to flatten the violin, meaning try to have the E string positioned as horizontal as possible. this way with the help of gravity, the bow has a better chance to settle well on the string which will produce calmer controlled tone. I hope this helps.
I bet your students are amazing violinist with you as a teacher! Patience and Perseverence is the key for success. Thank you !

Any suggestions for pieces an intermediate violinist could play?
Hi Jenna, Here is a video which might answer your question. Happy violin playing! th-cam.com/video/pcliQ2pJpJA/w-d-xo.html
How about grace notes?
yes, that also :)
What are grace notes? I've never heard that said before.
What kind of studies ( etudes) books can you recommend to practice these techniques?
Hi Lisa, there are many great etudes one could benefit from. Sevcik, Kreutzer and Schradieck are some of them. Happy violin practising! :)

Lovely day in the neighborhood. Just bought a violin last month, and recorded my first video this week. Feel free to visit my crazy videos!
You look more amazing in close up.
Você é linda princesa 🌹🇧🇷

I'm tired of seeing everyones full and luscious/clean bow hair.
