Thank you Joy this is amazing. I am aged 76 and have been learning for 4 years. I passed grade 5 and then joined my local orchestra which sadly only had vacancies for first violins! I was given 28 pages of scary music with notes up in the sky on E string and I had no idea how to find them! Your video will help enormously, thank you so much!!
You are so welcome Tony! I am glad to hear that I can be helpful. And do not be scared about playing the 1st violin in orchestra, as you will get better with time. Meanwhile here are some videos about high position notes on E string which might be helpful to you. @@JoyLeeViolin Thank you Joy for your wonderful support and helpful advice. I watched your videos on playing in high positions and they were so helpful! I will go to my next orchestra rehearsal with much more confidence thanks to your advice!
I'll be availing of these links, Joy. Thank you! Thank you for the question, Tony. It always seems like a big jump up to those kind of pieces! I've used a few "tricks": learning to read the notes more quickly ('jibbidy-face" or GBDFACE and onwards). Marking in the semitones with a 'v' Marking the sharps/flats in those unfamiliar super high places Playing(and writing!) the sections down an octave to get the tune in on my ear Listening to the music on TH-cam I found name of a students study book on the ABRSM website "Herbert Kinsey: Elementary Progressive Studies Set III". They have very 'gettable' notes and 'inch by inch" bring you up the positions. It's a great learning tool. I'm getting great use out of it. Not sure if he has a part IV. I would bring hard orchestra music to my weekly lesson. If necessary book an extra lesson. One could study away on the current scary music as a training ground, let the concert happen and then apply for the next concert (or second next concert). When one is in the orchestra it might be possible to get a few interested people to meet socially in a small group to practice the hard bits and have a cuppa afterwards. These are all the helps that sprung to mind, Tony. Dr. JOY will add more meaty ones. I'm off to study them! Very best regards. G Ire (adult student)
@@SF-ru3lp Thanks SF for the tips about Herbert Kinsey's book I will certainly look it up! I also find it useful to find high notes on the E string by hopping across from the A string to find a note a fifth higher. Best Wishes, Tony
Thank you so much dear Joy. I'm an adult player, whose has been playing since I was 9 years old. I took some lessons, but never had time to keep up. What you are doing is amazing... I got confused on what fingering to play on new pieces, as most modern violin sheet musics don't denote fingering - accept for some old sheet musics. Even the sheet music, written by Nathan Milstein (Chopin Nocturne) shows no fingering. Your 7 Rules of Fingering makes a lot of sense. Your contribution to the humanity in the world of music is INVALUABLE !! Don't forget, you are ultimately teaching students all over the world, at all range of ages...and we all appreciate you and adore you ! Keep up the good works !!
As a fellow teacher, I like watching your videos to see how much are teachings are similar. We can all learn from each other! Thankfully (for me) we have 99% of things in common but I will also be very happy to see and learn something new if you end up explaining a new concept, something perhaps that was never taught to me in my younger years, or an idea I haven't thought of or taught myself! Great videos :)
Dear Liam, It is always nice to get nice messages from another sincere violin teacher like you. Thank you very much for your kind words and sharing your thoughts. I am glad to hear that we agree on many things:) Happy music making Liam!
This video is very very interesting, techniques that I may never get to that level of, however, it enables me to observe violinists with more understanding of their enormous talent. Thank you.

Thank you for a great video. this is a subject I am very interested in. I have not seen fingering covered like this and will find it very useful to benefit from your experience. I would like to see more videos where you go into detail about the techniques used in difficult passages of classical music. I am not a great reader so some material on interpreting/counting of the higher level rhythmic figures. Just throwing out some ideas for you to consider. Thank you again.
hi~ Thank you so much for watching this video I can't speak English because I am Korean But I try to see and understand your movements, and I also want to take private lessons online I believe that the opportunity will come one day Thank you for all your help♡♡
Thank you very much 늘달팽이 . No worries about your English, as your English is great! Also feel free to write in Korean if you prefer. I understand Korean as I was born and raised in Korea :) Happy music making!
Thank you Joy, you answered my question. Whether to play a low D with the fourth finger on the G string, or just move over to the open D string,. when heading up or down the scale. Thank you Merry Christmas 2021
the vibrato technique is the same for all types and sized of hands. I've already made some videos about it and on my Patreon there will be the entire vibrato course available soon. Here is how to Search for Specific Videos in my Channel: th-cam.com/video/4NPAg2qiuQE/w-d-xo.html
I am really struggling with double stops involving the pinky, particularly D (4th finger on G str) and F natural (2nd finger on D str); or A (4th finger on D str) and C natural (2nd finger on A). My teacher has asked me to focus on left hand tension in general and I have observed that controlling tension helps in the above mentioned double stops. But then it messes up the intonation. It's really bugging me. Would you have any suggestions?🙂 P.S. - A happy new Year to you! 😃
Working on the independence of the left fingers can be very helpful when playing double stops. Dounis has great exercises about that. maybe you can try. Happy violin playing! :)
whoops that was a bit too advanced for me. Thought you'd teach beginner tips to place fingers correctly but I stayed and enjoyed it anyway haha! I'll make sure to check out your other videos and I'm glad I found your channel and that enchanting smile of yours. それじゃ、また! www

Can you please give us the different between double stop and chord
Loai Alhajj A double stop is two notes played and a chord is three or more
Thanks Janae! That's correct! :)

Hi Vkay, try to use lighter bow weight and keep the bow in between the bridge and fingerboard, as you play. I hope this would help. Happy practising!
