He sang this and wrote this because the love of his life was gone from his life, he knew she would never come back, but he didn’t blame her because he knew in the end his own folly drove her away. This was his tragic, sorrowful “i’m sorry, this is what I wish could have been.” This was the song he chose to make his swansong.

@2yoyoyo1Unplugged he didn't actually write the song, but yes, he was singing it to the love of his life, for sure. The Rightous Brothers, with the solo sung by Bobby Hatfield, made the song popular in 1965. But it was written for the movie "UNCHAINED" in 1955 and sung by Todd Duncan as the theme song.

But then he starts playing the piano and singing, it's a completely different person, words he was slurring just 1 minute ago are now sung in a strong, deep, in charge. The operatic notes he hits are amazing. The transformation is just amazing,

For 20 mins after I left cinema I was so choked I couldn't speak. It took me back to the night news came in he died and this version was played on radio. I'm 65 and shocked that this man can still have that affect on someone who never met him. There was a day he wasn't out of the news or not in a paper in magazine. Yet ironically a lot of newspapers put his passing somewhere around page 5

    Elvis`s career lasted 24 years (1953 - 1977 ).
People are constantly talking about his weight gain, when in fact, he gained weight in the last three years of his life. In the end, his face was bloated, not fat.
Some months after this concert, he passed.
Elvis was a very sick man but all people mention about him is his drug abuse. He took legal drugs for his various health problems, no street drugs.

You can see how much he was struggling just to function. Yet he was so dedicated and so determined to please his fans, that his performance was still truly powerful and moving. No one knew at the time that this would be his very last concert. His talent was a gift to him from God and we are forever blessed that he shared it with us. Love your reaction. Elvis sounded operatic there, especially near the end. Just amazing. Luciano Pavarotti once said that if Elvis had had any classical training growing up, he may well have become one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century.
And he didn't put on a few pounds as you say in the way that you would normally think of, it's because of all the drugs they had him on in conjunction with his deteriorating Health condition, some of that congenital, and so there was just a ton of bloating going on.
He was definitely too sick to be performing live, but his asshole manager pushed him even in this state, and then Elvis thought of his fans and decided to go ahead and do the last couple shows.

First time I heard this song I was 7 years old. My dad was coming home from one of his usual Saturday morning golf games, and he stopped at the mall and got me two things. The first was a sugar cookie, which while I love thouse, I was more excited about what he handed me next. A cassette tape called “The Greatest Performances of Elvis Presley”. The tape had an assortment of tracks, both studio recordings and live performances, ranging from his start in 1953 to the end in 1977. I listened to that tape religiously be it in my room, riding with my mom in her car, or riding with my dad. I had that tape with me a lot. So this song played I don’t know how many times. I remembered even then feeling the power of that vocal. I had no idea then that it was near the end of his life, or what he was going through personally at that time. His manager was keeping him busy with countless gigs and Vegas appearances. He was a greedy money hungry man who took advantage of Elvis, taking 50% of Elvis’ earnings from his live performances in the later years and working him to the point of exhaustion. Elvis also never got over the heartbreak of losing his mother so young, and also his divorce from Priscilla. All of this, mixed with his inherited health issues effected him. People say that it was the pills and unhealthy life choices that killed him. But if you read the book “Destined to die Young” it really dives into the true cause of his death. He had a health condition that was hereditary from his mom’s side of the family. In fact, his mom also ha it. In his case, he had an enlarged heart and an impacted colon. The book shows that even if he’d never taken a pill in his life, he still would’ve most likely died young. As a 7 year old kid, I didn’t know any of this. I just knew I liked what I heard. Seeing it now, and knowing his story, it makes it even more powerful. I would describe it as beautifully heartbreaking. The reason is, because it’s heartbreaking that he was going through all of this at the time, but even in spite of it, when he sang, especially a song like this, he gave it all he had. His voice never wavered one bit. If you ever watch the Elvis movie from 2022, Austin Butler recreated this so beautifully. Worth a watch.

I am 72 and grew up listening to, and watching his movies, and then I was there in the 70's. I saw him LIVE twice in the mid-70s A lot of entertainers can be loud through their amps, but Elvis's voice was so POWERFUL it really was unreal. He was playful and so confident when on stage, he owned it. I miss him dearly, and that period was so loose and fun. Thank you for playing and reacting to his music, he has so many even in the sixties that would blow you away.

I don't think she was ever able to attend one of his concerts, but she had every album, 8 track or cassette she could buy. But watching Britt react to the King of Rock reminds me of how she would react to his voice on the radio or whatever. Every time you have one of his songs I have to try hard not to cry a little. This is from the CBS Special "Elvis In Concert," 1977 just weeks before his death. Elvis was extremely ill at this point and probably shouldn't have been on stage but he didn't want to disappoint fans. It is his original performance of "Unchained Melody;" during which Elvis was the only person playing an instrument; the other instrumentation and the back-up singers were over-dubbed later for the recorded version. Elvis was self-taught in a variety of instruments including the guitar, the drums, the piano, the organ, the accordion and more. As for his piano playing, Elvis loved playing the piano and did so at home all of the time according to his cousin, Billie Smith & many others. As most know, Elvis was a humble man. As for him claiming that he couldn't play the piano, he also once said that he could 'play the guitar a little bit just like he could sing a little bit.' And he said it seriously; um...could 'sing a little bit.' He was that modest about his talent.
