      I feel like I'm constantly reminding people why we have photography in the first place when they seem down that Panasonic are sticking to new ways to figure out how to make contrast detect only work. Photography as a medium wouldn't exist without someone stuck in a room trying the same process over and over again with different ingredients until they got a print.

    Super excited to take the S1R on mountaineering treks! No one does weatherproofing like Lumix. With the AA filter-free/ PDAF point-free sensor, dual card slots, superior weather-resistance, etc, in my opinion, this camera is set to be the best landscape photographer's tool on the market. My G9 keeps shooting at -40°C and I expect no less from the S1R. An extra kilo in the bag is no killing affair :)

    I think m43 will have its draw back sure, "There's no replacement for displacement", but like you said, the tech exponentially increases in cost as the senor size goes up. So for us m43 shooters, if we can take the senor size hit, and enjoy the compactness, we will also be the first to test new tech. Dual ISO, best IBS, and a myriad of other little features that come first in m43 vs FF. I think I speak for other M43 Fan Boys when I say. "I can work around the smaller senor, save some money, and have a much better user experience over FF cameras". In the end, if you control your light like a Pro, sensor size does not matter. Its only in situations you can't control your light does the FF shine.

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FF produces noticeably better quality results than MFT, in any light. The higher resolution and better noise performance and dynamic range matter even at base ISO. MFT has its place if you absolutely need the smallest gear. But it's nowhere near FF in terms of quality.

      @@youknowwho9247 Unless of course you want to do a handheld long exposure with the greatest depth of field in which case M43 cameras will destroy most of the FF opposition in that regard. Also they don't always have higher resolution for example 1DX has only 20mp

    They had the S1R at the Photo Pro Expo near Cincinnati a few weeks ago. I picked it up and shot a few test shots and checked out how it felt in the hand. It really is a nice body and comfortable. It's certainly bigger than my Z7, but it's still comfortable and not unusually large. I've been a fan of Lumix for quite awhile and really loved my GH5 the most. Good luck to them.

  • @rejeannantel1185
    @rejeannantel1185 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great camera review Ted. Above all, I like your objectivity.
    That said it’s funny how everyone debates on which camera is the best. For my part I try to forget about my camera - which is easy to do because financially I can’t buy any of these newer models. Cameras may be out of date but they surely are not out of usage. As an example, I see you still use your Sony Nex 3 and your Panasonic GH5. And people are still using film cameras and even Holgas. Out of Date but not Out of Use.
    Working with an older camera models may give you some limitations but it lets you focus on what’s more important. A camera is just a tool that lets you capture a moment. Just be sure that the moment you capture has “content”. That’s what most photographers should be striving for. I wonder how many people can tell which camera model was use when looking at an image. Nobody cares about that. Which would you prefer an image that has content and is slightly out of focus or a pristine image without content. Which would you choose?
    Since cameras have become digital too many people have become obsessed with “deeper pixels” and getting pristine images. Sure enough, it can be handy but that alone does not necessarily make wonders. One needs to see where he stands with his work, not his camera.

    The M4/3 system is not dated, imo. It's actually used by quite a few people for photo and video. And it's an absolutely sensor par excellence for video since it allows very high data rates and resolution without resulting in a camera with huge heat issues. Contrast based AF is fine for photo. And as of the last firmware release AF for video (GH5) is quite good, but is not getting the publicity it deserves.

    About the MFT sensor limitations, some say the same is true for FF sensors, as in, that due to the psychics of it all, they can't get all that much better. Future improvements will be more about AF, stacking, etc. So if a FF camera isn't excelling in one of those non-sensor areas, they're falling short to some extent. But that AI AF sounds like something for the future!

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing is, whatever limitations for sensor tech there are, they'll hit MFT harder than full frame because full frame is four times the size, which is an advantage in terms of physics that will always remain.

  • @chongp07
    @chongp07 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The biggest problem with the high res mode is that unlike Sony or Hasselblad's H MS is that for product photography, it needs to be usable with flash and will need an adjustable lag between shots to allow the flash to recharge. Hopefully this will be addressed in a firmware update, but it shows that the Panasonic engineers are not talking to product shooters.

    I've started getting tired of some of the limitations of my G85 (I end up in low light far too often), but I've grown to trust the camera immensely. I have NO fear taking it out for a few hours into windy, freezing sunsets.
    I took her out snowshoeing a few weeks ago - by the end of the walk, my scarf was frozen solid over my face (my mustache froze into my scarf ¯\_(ツ)_/¯), my goggles were mostly frozen over (like 25% visibility), and all my reusable heat packs were cold (try keeping just one inside your jacket - the difference to your core temperature is a massive comfort improvement). My G85 was showing no signs of caring... except of course for the back of the camera being covered in frost from my breath condensing and freezing over.
    When it comes to proper weather sealing, I doubt I could trust anybody more than Panasonic.

    Yes, I have a question. Great review by the way, it felt like it's not paid and I appreciate that since most of them on this camera seemed like they're either paid or people are in some way obligated to tell only good things. My question is which camera did you use to film yourself in this video? Also how did you feel that's the image quality from video was? Was it in any way a downgrade from stills? How about the dynamic range? And the last question is and I know you won't be probably able to answer it so I'm sorry for being a pain have you ever seen a footage from Panasonic varicam? How does this compare. I like to know who made the sensor and this is actually the best way to tell. Thanks for the review again

I cannot See a limitation there. if sensor size has technological limitations, then this limitation will apply to all sensors! including FF! It would then only be a matter of time! But I do not believe they have to get bigger and bigger! I think they will develop! I think it's fantastic that we have several alternatives and I believe everyone has their target audience.

This could be a long term solution for Panasonic's long game as far as staying competitive,, although I am concerned that the lack of a first rate auto-focus will put off the stills shooters, a few I know who defected to Sony for just that reason. Serious video shooters can look forward with great anticipation based on these samples.. I tell you right away that I am looking for a mirrorless that does video very well; so absolutely NO to Canon EOS R (because I believe that in photo mode now all the cameras make excellent photos). The last question: do you think Panasonic will release a firmware update that will improve autofocus consistently?

    Why must every magazine/review list a "New," product as the "It," of the year? To me, personally, the Nikon D5300 and D750, are still the perfect cameras to own. Then again, Whatever camera, a person is happy with is the winner. Do we have to come-out with products of the year simply to entice people to spend the money to get the "Latest," equipment? What-a-scam.
    Buying one is not gonna make ya a better photographer. May get you more views on 500px or MeWe. I' notice too many taking images with so-called "Beginner," DSLRs, that take far better images than the so-called, self-proclaimed..."Professionals."

There was a lot of information there, with the voice-over seemingly continuing the entire video. Perhaps just a couple of seconds pause now and then (perhaps whilst showing the video footage) would still keep things short and to the point, but make it more easily digestible. Nevertheless, I like your first impression review! Maybe you make a few more film based videos focusing on medium and large format?

  • @KrunoslavStifter

    One this to mention about the firmware updates to AF system. It won't do much good because as with GH5 and G9 its not the problem of detecting the subject, problem is for the sensor to communicate with the lens proparly and reliably. As long as its contrast detect system they are using, no amount of firmware update will make it reliable for video. Both GH5 and G9 has been given various updates but still no can do. They detect the eye for example and draw a box around it every time, but actually focusing on it, not so much. Contrast detect, its the bottle neck for Panasonic. And I really don't understand why they are still using it. Is it some kind of patent issue or are they that stubborn.

    • @katniss4450
      @katniss4450 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought it was because of the size limitations of 4/3 sensors that Panasonic couldn't do a proper implementation of dual pixels like Canon. But now, seeing as how they didn't bother incorporating dual pixels on the much larger full frame sensor of the S1, it makes me think you're right, and they're either hamstrung by some weird legal issue or that they're being stupid and idiotically stubborn about their crap CAF.

    • @KrunoslavStifter
      @KrunoslavStifter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@katniss4450 I don't really get why they are not using it either. Must be some politics involved. The sensor size really does not matter, I mean you have many smartphones using it on much smaller sensors and you have Sony using phase detection on their 1" sensors form the RX series which are all smaller than MFT. In fact, at this point, Panasonic seems to be the only company still stuck in contrast only land. [scratches head]
