    UPDATES: The S1R with 4K/60 does pixel binning, not line skipping, with a 1.09x crop. Pixel binning is better than line skipping, though both are worse than a full sensor readout (like what you get at 4k/30). You can choose other aspect ratios for the HLG files. The TRUTH about Tony’s S series video
    Fact checking
    1:32 - pricing - for sure compare but there are tons of advantages the S cameras that would account for the price difference over Nikon/Sony (build quality, viewfinder, stabilization level, high res mode, video)
    2:14 - full frame* it’s doing at least what the Sony and Nikon are doing. The additional features that you’re criticizing with your disclaimer aren’t matched by any other full frame cameras yet
    2:25 - stabilization - they claim 5.5 in body and 6 with lenses. A minor error but you should get it right if you’re calling your video ‘the TRUTH’
    3:58 - XQD is there more for photographers than videographers. Also pretty sure you’re not buying a V90 UHS-II 256GB for $65. How bout a fair comparison? If you hold manufacturers to a fair apples to apples comparison you should hold yourself to the same standard
    4:20 - USB-C - quite a lot of cameras do charge via USB-C but many other cameras can’t be powered while using the camera where the S models can
    5:17 - video quality - this maybe true for now but other full frame cameras don’t have the ability to do 422 10bit internal where the S1 does by a paid firmware update. This is the first mirrorless FF camera to allow this. To say it won’t beat the A7iii or Z6 is disingenuous
    5:33 - Panasonic has repeatedly said these cameras are focused on photographers more than videographers. Your comment is just wrong.
    5:58 - show me one example of Panasonic saying these cameras are good for vloggers?
    7:13 - maybe you don’t understand DFD or maybe you’re being deliberately deceptive, DFD DOES know which direction to move and how far. I’m not saying in video it performs well, just that your comments aren’t accurate. My experience with stills and DFD tracking has been that it’s very good.
    7:52 - the G9 performs well for stills shooting AFC. S series may be better or worse but clearly you don’t know yet.
    13:23 - if you accept the camera has 47.3MP native resolution than you also need to accept the 187MP claim. Otherwise you should be calling every camera out for only having 1/3 of the claimed resolution.
    14:31 - EM1X - wrong, it has a 20MP sensor, not 24. Your comment about smaller file only applies to the handheld high res mode which is 50MP. Olympus still offer the same claimed 80MP tripod high res mode (that they had previously) so the claim about them realizing they don’t need the bigger file is just false Tony. Did they really say that to you? If so, they lied.
    15:26 - not at all useful for landscapes? There are plenty of photographers with Pentax’s, Olympus’s and G9’s who’d disagree with you. Not all landscapes have moving elements.
    18:11 - Nikon and Sony have a 30 minute time limit and don’t offer 4K60p at all. At least the S1 does unlimited in 4K30p. It is still leading in this area against the competition and your comments make it sound like it’s not better than other models.
    18:24 - the info I’ve seen says the S1R in 4K 60p is doing a 1:1 pixel readout, hence the 1.1x crop.
    20:37 - they’re in 16:9 because they can only be played back on TVs (which are all 16:9). Any HLG compatible TV will work apparently (not just Panasonic)
    22:53 - yeah but it’s a piece of shit
    23:49 - are you not up to speed on Sigma? They’ve announced an official EF-L adapter. Plus all their art lenses and new designed lenses for L mount, adapter should be within a couple of months and 10 lenses this year.
    27:15 - you’re just wrongly assuming this camera is targeted as a full frame GH5. It’s not, it’s a stills camera first.

      I don’t know why I wasted my time doing that, it just shits me that Tony is all sour because he didn’t get an invite to the press launch and makes a click bait video with a ton of dubious claims.
      Some of what you say is definitely fair and valid, but the inaccuracies and clearly uninformed conclusions or definitive statements take away credibility on the really good points you do make.

      2:35 On burst rate: "9fps without af", false it's with afs
      8:30 On "shots ruined by continuous hunting": ruined ???
      11:00 On resolution: "higher MP in ff mirrorless but...only 7% more than A73", so it is a negative? why presenting it this way? it's higher, full stop, without "but"
      11:40 On resolution: "their claim falls in between..." between dslr and medium format? did he not see the claim was within ff mirrorless?
      11:50 On zooms: "only consumer zooms available", consumer? why spoiling those lenses without even trying them?
      16:40 On High-res: "it's not reliable even on the second floor of our house because of camera shake", what??? product shot on tripod not reliable on second floors???
      19:35 On 1080/180: "no audio and no af", true but could have added that 120fps has them
      21:45 On Canon zoom: "Canon released a 20-70 f2 glass", when was that?
      25:30 On gh5 alternative, are we sure that a aps-c crop on S1 means loosing f-stops? Not too sure on that ...

      Andrea Rotelli good points there!
      His comments on High res mode in particular are ridiculous. Myself and other photographers I know use them all the time on G9/EM1m2 with good success. And the speed in which it operates has big advantages over doing stitching as Tony suggests. Stitching also doesn’t provide full color information for each pixel like high res mode does.

    It's worth pointing out that on sensor phase detect harms image quality, it's what causes shadow banding etc. So if you don't need the super fast AF it's actually better to have the S1R sensor.

    • @royalephotography5024
      @royalephotography5024 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @chrisogrady28
      @chrisogrady28 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@royalephotography5024 not quie sure what you're getting at on thos 2 year old comment. But the point still stands that everything else being equal, the lack of phase sensors increases image quality. I'm not saying that makes a better camera overall, I'd still persoanlly trade a tiny hit to IQ for a bog improvement to AF. However it's still an important consideration for those who don't need good AF. I guarantee the S5ii does show shadow banding if you push the files hard enough, just a niche use case. For high dynamic range landscapes the S1R is still better.

    At first you thought Canon eos r was not worth it, then you made a couple of videos claiming the opposite.Then you announce Fuji xt3 camera of the year without making a review or even adequately explaining why. Now you seem to rush making a video which explains why we should not get excited with the announcement of Panasonic s1 - again without even making a proper review. What's going on guys? By the way , used to be big fun of you Tony - are you still objective?!

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, there literally won't be a "proper" review of the S1 for months because Panasonic is a ways out from finishing it. However, we can tell a lot from what we know already - there aren't any lenses fast enough to make full-frame worth it. There's no lens backwards compatibility like the Canon, Sony, and Nikon mirrorless. There's no PDAF. These are fundamental, objective problems with the camera system. Yet, they cost quite a bit more than their competitors. And yes, we're still objective.

    • @stephenbarlow2493
      @stephenbarlow2493 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@TonyAndChelsea - Just 14 upcoming lenses from Sigma i.e. probably all their fast primes. Sigma has announced that they are only going to be using the L mount for their cameras now on, and currently Sigma have a policy of making all their lenses available in SA mount. They also say when they bring out a L mount camera, they will convert all SA mount lenses users have to L mount. Meaning they must be preparing L mount configurations for all their lenses. As you say, Panasonic is some way off a launch of the production model and firmware of this camera, and Sigma have promised these 14 lenses this year. Presumably Sigma will have at least some of if not all the 14 lenses, for when the S1 and S1r go on sale, or shortly after. It doesn't make much sense for Sigma to launch these L mount lenses now, as you assume they'd only sell a limited amount to Leica SL owners. However, for obvious reasons they would be able to sell far more to those purchasing S1 and S1r cameras, when they are available for purchase. If you're objective, then why do you keep missing this component out of your reasoning, because it contradicts what you're saying about a lack of lenses. Also Sigma is supposedly going to produce adapters, including L mount to Canon EF.

TH-cam reviewers need to stop preaching this full frame nonsense... unless you shoot weddings and need fast zooms you don’t. A small sensor with fast primes is great! Depends on the needs of the shooter. That being said this Panasonic full frame looks promising once it’s actually tested ... and signa releases cheaper lenses. Some nuances.
    0) Panasonic FF will with the Sigma art line have exceptional lenses available.
    1) panasonic always start with a steep price for early adapters.
    gh5 went down 500 euro in price in half a year (in the netherlands).
    2) 422 10 bit internally, no need for a external recorder is huge for profesional videographers!
    3) Panasonic has more experience with high end mirrorless, then canon and nikon,
    so less likely hood of unexpected fails due to engineering problems.
    4) No banding, for contrast detection autofocus only.
    5) High ress may not be usefull all the time, but i can say the same about flash, not every picture needs flash, or an ND, or focus stacking, or color filters, but it's nice to have.
    A good photographer has a bag off tricks available, other wise just use your phone.
    6) S1R is not as much for video as the s1, just like every other high ress camera.
    Yess the S1 crops with 60 fps, but it has 60 fps. Yess i agree they should make clear that there is a crop, but if you want to it;s there no other manufacturer has it.

It is amazing how you presented a FHD 180fps as a bad thing... Could you let me know how many sound record the EOS-R at 60 FPS? and this final
    comparison with the GH5 was amazing as well... Could you let me know how to obtain a 4k 24fps full frame at 1.4 with the GH5 or with the amazing canon 50mm at 1.2? let's do some simple maths. 1,2x1,7=2,04. Tony a few things to clear up to make the comparisons fair, equally fast SD cards are as expensive as XQD, and XQD offers potential expansion to C-FastExpress at 1000MB/s. XQD is/will actually be cheaper for the faster equivalent cards required for 6K and 8K video. The screen is designed to allow proper access to the inputs, the old flip forward screen wouldn't work with HDMI, audio and USB in it. As for AF, you can't have the eye autofocus/human AF along with PDAF, it's physically impossible. In video, the AF it's still not perfect that's true, but for stills it's very, very good and can track people even from the back, automatically. As for the high resolution, you're comparing apples and oranges, it's 187mp when measured in the exact same way as any other bayer sensor, no one measures mp in 'full colour'. When dealing with movement in HR mode, there's a blur processing mode that allows both handheld shooting and also fixing motion blur artefacts, I've shot plenty of landscapes with high resolution with no issues whatsoever, even moving water. As for the 50mm f1.4, it's performance is up there with OTUS, which is pretty much double the cost and lacks the AF. I think once you really get to play with the camera, you'll realise it doesn't compare to the EOS R or the Z6, it's a real beast, and really is the best stills mirrorless camera I've had the fortune to use

    I agree on most points, with a big exception: the pixel shift. It is too long to explain, but if you accept that a 20mpix camera has 20 mpix (and ignore the fact that the info is actually less due to the math needed to comb over the bayer array) then their high res is of as many mpix as they say. so they follow the industry. asking them to do otherwise is akin to asking every manufacturer to say they have 5mpx instead of 20 (not exactly but you get the point) so it is not more misleading than the always present mpix count.
    I also disagree with the generalisation about the usability of the mode, but it is a fair point because it is your experience. Just remember others may have a different one.

It is, however, hugely expensive, so I would want it to be nudging Leica and Otus levels of performance. For my type of photography, which doesn't include filming myself, taking selfies, or shooting people running erratically towards me, it looks very interesting indeed. The high megapixel facility will be great for still life. I love the feature on my Pentax K-1. At the end of the day, all cameras are compromises, so you buy what does the job for you. Tony, good video, but you're making some complaints without having used the camera, which is unfair. Certain things we can tell from the specs, but not everything. When you complain about them "Drawing Boxes" but pictures aren't necessarily in focus - certainly that's possible, but you need to test that features out before you complain about. I believe people (Max Yuryev) were saying the opposite about the A6400 - where the boxes seemed slow, almost as if it can't keep up, but the actual pictures looked great and in focus on a computer.
    Similarly when you talk about image stacking; how perfectly still everything has to be and it's a useless marketing feature. Well, let's see.. my cell phone has image stacking and that works well even while hand-holding. I'm not saying Panasonic will achieve the same feat, but we need to test before we have these gripes.
    I'm not expecting this camera to win any awards first time out, but we need to give it a fair chance and try to review it without bias.
    Anyway, love the channel, keep up the good work. Like many viewers, I appreciate the criticism, but _after_ testing.

  • @AmorLucisPhotography

    One final comment: You claim that the high res mode delivers an effective 94.6 Mp *with full color*, rather than 187 Mp. I think in an important sense you are right, but I also think you really should compare apples with apples rather than with oranges. For one thing, this is not the same as what a 94.6 Mp bayer sensor would or could deliver (and I know you know this), because of pixel density and consequent differences in noise levels you can get from pixel-shifted stacking.
    Secondly, you're totally correct about megapixels not being what matters. The reason for that, I would suggest, is that what matters is the amount of information captured in the image. A 94.6 Mp bayer sensor captures a lot less information than is captured in a 94.6 Mp *full color* image, right? I might be missing something, but why then can one not at least argue that the resulting image is *equivalent to* a 187 Mp image *from an otherwise similar bayer sensor*, thereby comparing like with like? I agree that presenting the image as 94.6 Mp full color is better. As with the Pentax K-1's 4-image pixel shift, the image file is larger, contains more information, and consequently can deliver much better IQ, but with resolution unchanged.

Its not Fullframe (which actually makes it more impressive), but until the a7R IV that was the highest non-medium format dslm and also had higher megapixel account than all dslrs

    Its getting really hard to know how to interpret such videos that present opinion on specs. Most of what is presented as fact on cdaf mechanisms is true for traditional cdaf systems but IMHO are misrepresented here as an issue with the s1/r as both use a different form called dfd. The latest Dfd uses cdaf, object detection, information on lens bokeh characteristics, motion vector analysis and now a form of subject pattern recognition to determine directionality and cdaf to track. There is an excellent demo on TH-cam of a Panasonic engineer explaining this with a train going around a track. The focus mechanism in the s1/r may well be excellent for video. It would probably be best to wait until it is in your hands. Why weren't you guys at the launch for the s1r??? I sense from this video a little bad blood with Panasonic??

    Best spec camera and very fair price of the mirrorless when you see 5K evf and 2 card slots. Considering that Canon is charging 2400 USD for a camera that doesn't even shoot 120 fps in 1080 and the Panasonic being the only one with 60 fps 4K - It's going to be very popular with high end hybrid users that are doing commercials and shorter higher end video work. And it will have 10 bit internal recording for videos. None of the others have that. This shows that the camera is built for high end and has very powerful processing ability. Compare that to a 100 USD less camera in the EOS-R that only has the same processing chip as the APS-C M50.
    I don't know if it's funny or sad that Tony is talking about every single negative point he finds on this camera... and is releasing his EOS-R video tomorrow that is by far the most expensive body for the buck - not offering even half of the features that these 2 cameras are offering. Lenses will be an issue at the start. But Sigma will be offering lenses in the long run so there is no doubt that this camera will get top quality native lenses. And they will be fairly priced - just like the camera.

Having the Sigma lenses available will immediately cover basically everyone's needs/wants as far as lenses go. Probably the smartest thing Panasonic did was join this L mount alliance. They can produce a few of their own lenses, but have natively mounted Sigma lenses, which are very popular, as well as Leica (which they've had a relationship with for a while) for the more status-oriented people.

    I think it's fair to point out the differences between marketing and real life usage. However, I think by not mentioning similar discrepancies in full frame camera's from other brands at the same time (and compare them), this video insinuates that only these new camera's are more about marketing then delivering. After watching this, I feel like people are going to take away from this that these are not good camera's, because there is so much emphasis put on the negatives. I don't think that's fair. Yes it might not be the best 4K vlogging camera out there, but come on. You can't tell me you think this is worse than the Canon EOS R that only does 4k/30 from a massive 1.8 crop, which basically means that wonderfull expensive 28-70 f2 acts like a 50 - 126 f3.6. And Canon doesn't even release a road map. So we don't know how fast they're coming with the 24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8 lenses. Nikon only released a 24-70 f4, 35 f1.8 and 50 f1.8. Not very interesting either if you lust for fast glass. I'm just saying neither of the brands has perfectly green grass on their side. I think Tony should have done a comparison instead of just focusing on the negatives of this launch.

    About AF... Just like you, I am not sold on their AI-assist... Yet. It means, we have to wait and see how it works. AI means it's a learning system, which will improve with time. Also Panasonic claims that its contrast detection is helped with recognition of the difference between anterior and posterior bokeh, which you for some reason failed to mention. No, I do not work for Panasonic, I just read the specs once.

    • @DaveHaynie
      @DaveHaynie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Deep Learning" doesn't necessarily mean the camera learns anything. It usually means that a system was trained to process image data via an AI, as opposed to being programmed directly via algorithms designed by puny humans, and that fixed AI system is in the camera. So it might get better over time, but only via software updates, not all on its own.

    • @IraklyShanidze00X
      @IraklyShanidze00X 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DaveHaynie I did not even imply that each camera will individually learn something (although now it is practically possible). I meant exactly what you said: the AF system performance will improve with time for all cameras, which has been failed to mention in the review.
      Not sure if you have had any experience with DFD focusing, but I've been using Leica SL since 2016. Focusing for stills is phenomenally fast with or without face recognition. These new Panasonic cameras use an already improved algorithm, and, by trusted accounts, Leica 24-90 zoom focuses even faster on S1 than on its native body.

    • @DaveHaynie
      @DaveHaynie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IraklyShanidze00X I have a Panaonic ZS-100 pocket camera that claims to employ DFD... it does seem to be decent for a CDAF system. I didn't realize that Panasonic had licensed DFD to Leica. If Leica lenses really do have the DFD data built-in, that would remove one of my concerns about the L-Mount Alliance: battling AF systems. I didn't find any mention of DFD in Leica documentation, so I assumed they had their own AF technology, but it's well known that Panasonic was heavily involved in Leica electronics systems. In M43, only Panasonic lenses include DFD data, so Olympus and other electronic lenses underperform on Panasonic cameras.

    The very large case is certainly good for big hands.
    In the video from Gordon Laing you can see a strong blackout - sports photographers should have a hard time with the Lumix S1.
