      kai, last week i bought my niece a little panasonic DMC-lm2 something something -- you should totally get one for the little gaffer. they are like $20 and with a little isopropyl alcohol you can send the scamp off with his first aspherical 16 megapixel Leica! lmao the pentaxians might lose it on me but i trained the niece on a broken pentax pc-35af first, after she could handle that she could handle the "Leica"... the shots are as you'd expect, both perfect and often hilarious. best $20 i ever spent in my life.

    I don't know if this even reaches you or not. However, I want you to know I was utterly depressed with my life back in 2013. Then I got interested in photography by watching your videos. I started taking photos since 2014 when I bought a Canon 700D. However, apart from photographic techniques and all, I've learnt a lot from your videos about the purpose of life. Your sense of humor, hardworking mentality, immense networking, incredible presentation skills taught me how to be a better person. I also want you to know that I'm a graduate in Film & Television Studies and planning to make my first feature film. All these happened because of your videos which grew interest in my mind about photography, filmmaking, camera and of course a deeper idea about life. I wish you'll shine more in future like Bo Keh! Love from Bangladesh. ❤

    Just bought the S1 after years on the Sonys (which I still love) and I agree with most of what you're saying. I shoot wedding and I use manual focus lenses on it, almost exclusively, and for that type of work, after a few shoots so far, it has been absolutely wonderful.

    • @HerreDePerre

      Sean Cook why did you choose for a s1 and not a canon 5d or 6d?

    • @Seapatico
      @Seapatico 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@HerreDePerreThere's really no comparison between mirrorless and DSLR -- especially using manual focus lenses. I haven't used a DSLR in probably 8 years ever since using an EVF. A good EVF changes everything about how I shoot, so the traditional DSLRs weren't really on the table.

    • @fellowcitizen

      The S-series are so far ahead of any other FF mirrourless except for AF or specific niches that I find it stunning that there isn't more buzz about them.

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fellowcitizen Might be because to 99% of people, reliable af is the most important feature on a camera. To me a system that can't focus is just dead in the water, no matter what else it does. Great features, great image quality, all useless if my shots aren't reliably in focus.

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Seapatico DSLRs are still massively outselling mirrorless alternatives and there are good reasons. If one shoots fast moving action, especially at long range, there's simply no way around DSLRs. The only mirrorless option is the a9, and Sony glass costs an arm and a leg and only goes to 400mm so far. That's not good enough for a lot of work.

    Went out heavily considering the s1. Tried it and walked out with the z6. New revamped firmware on may 16th, pro res raw video update for free, and no need to pay extra money to enjoy 4k 4.2.2 10bit raw with full pixel readout external today! S lenses are also nicer size for gimbal work and have very minimal to no focus breathing optimized for video. I hope Panasonic considers not charging for the 10bit vlog update and brings the fight.

    • @en.6565
      @en.6565 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom Ohle. Exactly the opposite for me. Initially bought the Z6 lured by Nikon's free FTZ adapter + trade-in promo and returned it after a week to buy the S1. The Z6 feels like a toy comparatively. A $2000 point and shoot. Got my S1 on April 4th, so got the free battery grip + free extra battery + free 3-year extended warranty Panasonic promo. It is the best full-frame mirrorless on the market and when the video update releases in July, it will do internally what no other mirrorless can do. Just a cursory look at videos shot on the S1 on youtube shows it has the best 4K video image quality of any full-frame on the market. Exited for what's to come!

    • @TomOhle1
      @TomOhle1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@en.6565 I can't say that I agree with you when you say that it 'feels like a toy'. Both are incredibly well built. The Nikon has less physical mass, but is no less well built. Least according to lens rentals and roger cigalas tear down, he reckons it's probably the best engineered mirrorless to date for build. Most issues (beside dual card slot critique) are software related and have been or are being addressed in the latest firmware.
      As for the video benefits - right now it's a very exciting time because Sony is getting some competition from lots of angles and it's super for the consumer!
      I'm hoping Nikons push into video forces Panasonic, Sony and others to copy as outside of a Sony Venice, I don't know of any other Full Frame camera in that price range that can output 12bit pro res raw files and 4k 4.2.2. I also don't know of any other system that effectively allows you to upload picture control profiles to camera and shoot in that profile directly. I wish you well with the Panasonic though, it's a great camera and I'm certainly glad to see some competition in the market place :)

    I want to wonder how it would compare to the Leica SL... yes, the SL is twice the price, but the S1 (as well as the S1R) can mount the SL lenses directly. Now that would be an interesting comparison... Leica glass on the S1, Panasonic class on the SL... The mind boggles.

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Although superficially they are comparable, really the S1 is in a completely different class to the A7III. Unless you need high-end AF at the expense of everything else, or are deeply embedded in the E mount ecosystem. The S1 exceeds the A7III for:
      IBIS 5.5st+dual
      EVF 5.7m
      video (6K, 4K60, HLG, unlimited 4K30)
      handling (esp. noticeable with large lenses)
      shutter actuations (400,000)
      flash synch (1/320) and shutter-dampening
      sunlight (white pixels)
      darkness (red retains nightvision, illum. buttons)
      imaging without risk of banding
      manual focus (focus throw choices 30degrees-360degrees, PIP, clutch)
      colour, and matching footage with GH5/G9/G95/Leica
      special features (pre-capture, timelapse, postfocus etc)
      audio (XLR...)
      menu navigation + special buttons (white balance, ISO buttons, concave, convex)
      shared compatibilities with Foveon, Sigma, Leica
      weather-sealing and durability
      ...and potentially for lens options (native Sigma ART + new lines, MC-21 for Canon lenses etc, though Sigma has said that they may have some L mount exclusives, and the L mount has more grip and more design potential.)

The AF problem showned in the video comes almost from the Lumix G7, no update from 2016 (just a 2 year update support) and still there when using face detection, focus get stuck on backround randomly with no refocus. A pain to see this problem again in 2019 on a new and very expensive camera, there is something wrong at top of that. Nothing is changed :/

    I think that most cameras would perform similarly when shooting a silhouetted person off a bright background. Understand that the camera is looking for eyes and cannot find them so it thinks there isn't a person there. Some Pro's use a small light to get focus in near darkness and then take the shot. The frame rate has a long way to go to compare to Sony but for most conventional cameras (DSLRs) it's fine. Though I'm not a Sony fan, it's hard to ignore the superb eye focus on their cameras. Nikon and Canon are you paying attention?

    • @youknowwho9247

      How is low light a plus for this camera? According to most reviews it's not better than the alternatives in terms of noise performance, compared to the Sonys it seems to be worse actually. Plus contrast detect only af is likely to cause lots of trouble in low light situations. After all, Panasonic cameras are legendary for not focussing in dim conditions and there's no reason to assume their full frames will be different in that regard.

    • @bobhanuman65
      @bobhanuman65 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never rely on most reviews because in the past when I purchased something based on a review and then actually used the camera it was a totally different story.
      I needed unlimited 4 k 30 in low light without an external recorder and this is the only camera that will do that.
      I’ve owned most of the Sony cameras and always ended up being frustrating on some level and sold them. I got fine results but just didn’t enjoy shooting with them. Yes autofocus is great. But my decisions are based on factors much more complex than autofocus.
      For me personally this is the best mirrorless out there for what I do. Studio portraits and events. If I want street photography I’ll use a Fuji. Except for outdoor events where I need a 70-200. I got that lens and it is without a doubt the best lens I’ve ever owned except maybe for a Leica summmilux.
      There is incentive for most reviews to get clicks to purchase gear. I also think there is a bit of group think going on with Sony cameras.
      Sure you can get good results with most things these days. But is it the right camera for what you do?

    High S-AF burst shoot is usefull for things that are moving fast but stay in the focus zone. ex: not flying bird, water drops, golf player, ...
    still relevant to mention it

      Most moving subjects have at least some motion on the z axis. Using single shot af in those cases seems unnecessarily unreliable to me.

    Thanks Kai for great review :) I'm planing to upgrade my gear and thinking to but this camera or D850. I mainly photograph landscapes and kinds, sometimes in "action" :) What you think ? I you like to get more to the video too :) Thanks for your help

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would choose the D850 in a heartbeat. Reasons are:
      1) Much cheaper. The bodies itself may be close in price, but for the Nikon you get much cheaper lenses, especially when you shop third party and used. Good condition used f/2.8 zooms come for under $1000 most of the time. The L-mount glass on the other hand is likely to be 2k and up.
      2) Lens selection. There may be an L- mount alliance in the works, but for the foreseeable future you're likely to have limited options there. Nikons F- mount on the other hand has been around for ages, and there are tons of lens options for every shooting situation and budget.
      3) Better focusing. This would actually be my number one reason. I personally couldn't stand using a system as unreliable as the Panasonics when much better options are available. The D850 focusses like a champ in any light, dead on every time. It also tracks action fantastically well, where the S1/R us just unusable (check DPReview for a test of that). To me personally, all the features in the world are useless when my shots aren't reliably in focus.
      4) Faster shooting speed. The ability to shoot 10 fps in af-s seems like a useless gimmick to me. What you want fast fps for are moving subjects, in other words you'll be using continuous af. And while the Panasonics can't really track action anyway, they also slow down a lot in that type of shooting. Not to mention the buffer fills up fast. With a D850, you get 7fps, or 9fps with grip, of accurate, continuously tracking shooting and a deep buffer. Limitless if you opt for jpeg actually.
      5) Better battery life. Pretty self explanatory. With the grip it's virtually unlimited.
      Now, there are reasons to choose mirrorless over the D850. The EVF and video features are undeniably advantages. But if I'd weigh mirrorless options, I'd go for the alternatives. Sony is ahead in tech, has the best low light and the largest selection of native lenses. Nikon and Canon both offer great usability and lots of lenses to use with great, native adapters. But most importantly, none of them have the issues in the af department that Panasonic has. I can't stress this enough. To me, reliable af is the single most important feature in a camera. If it doesn't get the shot in focus, everything else is meaningless. Out of focus shots are unusable shots. Therefore, a camera that can't reliably focus is a risk I'm not willing to take. Why would I, in a world with better options?

      @@youknowwho9247- thanks for detailed opinion. I think I've picked wrong time to change my gear :) D850 It's old technology, but it was the last and best DSLR in my opinion. I have feeling I should go with mirrorless specially I'm planing shoot video. I think Sony or Z7 but they are very small compare to S1 I really enjoy built and size of Panasonic. I think Panasonic dictate new trends which other manufacturers will follow.

    • @youknowwho9247

      @@peterpeterson7993 At this point in time it's really Sony in the lead and everyone else trying to catch up to them. Panasonic is using a lot of outdated tech, especially when it comes to af.
