When I was a teenager I desperately wanted Callaway's Big Bertha irons. Couldn't afford them at the time... But just love how they looked behind the ball.
I had the graphite shafted Big Berthas in 2001 and switched to the steelheads my junior year of high school. I didn’t like the feel as much on the steel heads so I eventually bought a forged set of Titleist irons after that.
975D was my dream driver, got one in high school and I still have it today! That driver is so good, I enjoy taking it out randomly and giving it a few swings...the sound is still fantastic
I love the etiquette golf promotes. I remember as a junior golfer my dad once told me that when he showed up mid-round to watch he could never tell from my demeanor if I was under par or playing poorly. I always appreciated that compliment and I still try to emulate that almost 30 years later.
I currently have a 61⁰ trusty rusty in my bag. As in the name it's trusty and rusty 😂😂. I'm replacing them this Christmas but if you're looking to review them like for an old skool bag lmk 🤙🏽🤙🏽
I've only been playing golf for a few years so don't have the same nostalgia. But I've always wanted a fully Nike set after watching older videos of Tiger and Rory and even the fact Brooks still plays the 3 iron. I think as they're not available new any more, it makes me want them more.
I just started golf a couple years ago and bought a full second hand Nike set when I started, Covert Driver, 5 wood and hybrid, VR Semi Cavity Back Irons, SV sandwedge, plus nike bag all for about £250. Whilst I've slowly replaced some most of those clubs the irons are going to stay with me for a long time. All of them great quality though but I think technology has advanced and the woods in particular were not always the easiest to hit, but they absolutely had the distance. Overall great products.
I’m only 24 but the putter I always wanted was the Taylormade Rossa blade putter which I used on the putting green at the Belfry. Couldn’t afford it… this year in my pro shop there was one in the 2nd hand bin. Bought for £30 and is now my summer putter. Love it!
I stared at pictures of callaway hawkeyes and titleist 975D’s every single day as a junior. I remember finally getting a 975J and it was the best day ever! Such fond memories of junior golf
Hi team, thanks for reviewing my question. My dream set as a kid in the early 90s was Wilson Killer whale driver, firestick shaft. Taylormade Burner 3 wood with the dimples. Ping eye 2 1 iron,Tommy armour 845s irons. Ping Anser putter. Played with them today. The large technology difference was the driver and 3 wood. Irons were great
In 95ish I was given a set of firestick shaft Wilson’s and I saved for a while and bought my a killer whale driver .. i remember all the old fellas laughing at how big my driver was …. It’s tiny now
Biggest negative from early age golf was not feeling like I fit in with the country club kids (US Golfer). I was the only kid on the golf team in school that wasn't a member at a club and I wasn't mentally tough enough to not care what people thought (hand me down clubs, random set, etc..). That being said, the positives outweigh the negatives for sure. I was an angry golfer as well...😂
Always wanted a burner driver. With the bubble shaft. My dad told me to do one. When the mini came out. Boom £400 down. He asked me if I’m any better with it. Nope. 🤣. Worth it.
The Titleist 975J will forever be my favorite old School driver from that time period. My entire varsity golf team mates in High School bought that driver. It was epic.
Did you not try the JVS HCr? Same classic 975 head but with the R&A legal hot face adapted for the Pro V1s. Out bombs alot of things made today. Nothing beats the clubhead speed of a driver under 360cc with a hot face.
@@vanbalzup6481 No I did not, the only illegal club I used was the Callaway ERC 2 and that thing was a rocket. I would love to find one of those today, I bet a lot of golfers wouldn’t even know it was illegal and just look as the size lol.
I just added a Cleveland Quad Pro from like 25 years ago into my bag. It’s a 7 wood but it’s amazing! I gamed the driver and 3 wood back in high school.
I’m SOMEWHAT of a traditionalist and still game my Titleist 975J (10.5 degrees, 44.5 inches length), a Taylormade V Steel 5 wood, Tad Moore putter, and Wilson Staff Dynapower Fluid Feel irons (from the 1960s). My irons let me know when I hit a bad shot, so I know what to work on in order to improve and be more consistent. In fact, I’d still play with persimmon woods if the courses today were not so long. The USGA and R&A really f _ _ k _ d up when they let the golf ball go too far and club heads get too big. I still enjoy playing courses around 5,800-6,000 yards with my persimmon woods.
Rick, as someone new to golf I have been watching all your videos and they are awesome to learn from. Please go back to Nelson golf club for old times sake as I’ve just joined as a member and the video with Peter is hilarious
I first started playing in about 1996 as a 12yr old…so this is really relatable! I can remember thinking I was very smart by getting a Callaway Great Big Bertha 2 wood instead of a driver since it should be easier to hit. After a few weeks that shaft broke so they sent me a Biggest Big Bertha Driver for free! 😂 I was lucky that my parents bought some really nice equipment pretty much right away some of which I was using until just a couple of years ago. The one thing I couldn’t justify them buying was a Scotty Cameron putter, back then they were about £400 if I recall….now as a grown adult I’ve indulged myself in quite the collection 🙈
Just took up golf 21 holes ago and found 7, 6 and 5 DCI's with extended shafts (I'm 6'5") for 5 euro each in the charity shop. I'm taking it as a sign.
Titleist DCI 981 irons, TaylorMade Titanium Bubble 2 Driver, odyssey 2 ball putter. 🤤🤤 want I got was a set of Howson followed by Macgregor that had to go back to American golf because the plate in the cavity back kept falling off 😂
I just put together clubs I wanted when I first started golf. McGregor Tourney Tommy Armour 2 & 4 wood, Cobra Oversized Norman Grind irons, Snake Eyes wedges and Response Putter 86 Master Champ putter. Can’t wait to play them
This was back in the persimmon days for me so the dream was Jack Nicklaus McGregor woods and Wilson staff fluid feel irons, never got them but they were stunning clubs
As a kid and a junior I always wanted the dimple cobra driver, the woods of those Titleist clubs (can't remember the specific clubs but it was 9 something) and the original Callaway X forged irons , Vokey set and a Scotty which I had and sold like a stupid kid (It was a Studio Newport 2 2006). I ended up with Diablo driver, Nike vrs 4 wood, Nike NDS irons, mixed hand me down/cheap wedges and a white hot odyssey putter. My grandfather was and STILL is a very generous man
Great discussion gents. I remember wanting the Original TM Burner Bubble Driver then it was the 975J. Irons that I finally got my senior year was the MacGregor Tourney Pros 2-PW with 2 vokey wedges and a Cameron Bullseye putter. Sadly I only have the putter still.
For me I worked all summer to buy a Ram Zebra Putter and a Titleist 975D driver. My next big want was actually in irons much later in my life I was finally able to afford a set of Miura Tournament Blades best iron purchase I have ever made!
would love to get these on the HIT channel, and with all the numbers we can get! AoA, Dynamic Loft, Club head speed, face to path, land angle. Just put it on screen for us nerds :)
Have to agree with the comment of keeping kids out of trouble. We would do the same as kids, literally from morning till night would be spent up the golf club.
I feel like my experience as a junior put me off golf. I've taken it back up as an adult and I'm glad I played when I was younger because I'm a better golfer now for it, but for the most part, I found the environment to be pretty awful back then.
Rick, I know you were joking about joining a LIV golf team like the rippers, but I have had a thought since LIV viewership is not quite on par with the PGA. What if a team of TH-cam golfers was put together and played in the LIV events. We all know that they probably wouldn't win the team events, but do you think TH-cam viewers would buy into supporting that team because of how invested we are as subscribers to TH-cam golfers anyway. I think this could be something that would hep LIV and the PGA move in the right direction to forming a unique partnership in the long run, as well as give TH-cam golfers another platform for proper competition and help them grow their brands and games.
I’m a very financially poor beginner an im playing with my late fathers clubs, I want new clubs but I don’t want to stop using his plus I couldn’t afford new ones even if I did, I’m going to scour charity shops, what should I look for. Big brands? Less wear an tear? Cheap prices?
I was gifted a Taylor Made 3 wood as a teen. Best club in my bag so naturally I lost my temper one day, tossed a ball in the air and swung at it like a baseball. And of course I hit it perfectly, right on the shaft. Snapped it in half. Only ball I’ve ever pured ☹️😆
I’m a very financially poor beginner an im playing with my late fathers clubs. Will I be judged for not having all the bells and whistles. An what should I do to blag that I’m the average golfer (I don’t even have covers for my drivers
Why did I think Rick was ALOT older than me when he’s only a year older…. My first driver was a persimmon. Then OG big Bertha and moved onto taylormade and then the 427 king cobra driver and everyone was like holy frap that’s huge.
Would love to see a golfbidder-esque challenge where you gamble to get the best set. You Finch, Fryer, Carter playing games to win the 1st, 2nd, 3rd pick of a club category then play a 18 hole stroke play match with the set you have built.
I understand it’s a pain for whoever edits these, but is there any chance you could put an image of the clubs you talk about on the screen please? What the hell is a trusty rusty 🤷🏻♂️

@@BrandonGavin_EDC they pop up online pretty often, it’s just about trying to find one in the right loft with an upgraded shaft.
Fortunate enough I got a Titleist 975D for Christmas one year. Thanks mum. Played night noon and morning with it

Great video. Nice to see the passion and memories on display whilst reminiscing.
I got myself a set of Titleist 962’s about a year ago because I wanted them when I was in HS and couldn’t afford them. They’re still pure.

Also loved the Wilson staff reflex irons that had the first speed slots in 1979
How about Tony Pena persimmon woods

Looks like an idea for a video for the guys. Use golfbidder to buy your ideal club set when you were a junior and play a few holes.
15yr ago I bought a titliest 6.5 degree 975d tried it on the range but couldn't hit it and it lay in a cupboard since, might try it again

I wanted the 3 wood Sonartec, the David Duval series …. In Japan it was called Royal Collection…. I got both eventually
I used to always sleep with my new football boots and rollerblades when I was a kid! 🤣
When I was 11, I saved all my Christmas and birthday money and bought a TaylorMade Bubble Burner 3 wood and I loved that club so much
Those old school Furry Callaway head covers were the GOAT’s.
bring it on rick video these ,feeling the buzz laying my guitar
For me I still want to get a hold of the Ben Hogan apex blades. But love my current mizuno’s
As a teen I have to say I was desperate for a set of Mizuno T Zoid irons and then when they came out wanted the Ping i3 irons.

People should go back to using a old school driver with smaller head occasionally . It's a good training aid .
When I was growing up the original taylormade burner was the driver to have
1996 mizuno tp19 the one NICK FALDO used
TaylorMade Ti Bubble shaft driver, it just seemed to be space age tech.
