John Carpenters The Thing 1982 is up there for sure The Original The Exorcist 1974 is another great Evil dead 2 The original Candyman 1992 is a masterpiece in my opinion
it follows is probably my number one favorite of all time. everything about it is perfect. another favorite from years ago is antiviral.. it's directed by david cronenberg's son brandon, who also made a movie called possessor which is also worth a watch if you're into visceral body horror (21st century edition)
perfect blue is one of my favorite movies of all time and personally, i understand why letterboxd doesn't list it as horror; i think it's more of a psychological thriller with some horror themes. that said, it's still deeply unsettling all of the way through. the music, the little details (always gets me how every single person in CHAM's crowds are men) mina's isolation, the dreamy 90's animation style.. i also feel Kon did a swell job of truly portraying a story through a woman's eyes, i felt like mina's emotions and actions are extremely relatable and realistic, the depiction of the exploitative nature of idol culture and how it can break someone. although i also really enjoy black swan, there's a lot more.. male gazey-ness coming from aronofsky. (if you've seen the 'natalie portman grinding on the pillow' scene you know what i mean.) i am also pleased to see funny games on this list, although i have only seen (and enjoy) the american version.. though i've heard the original is more disturbing. the remake is actually shot for shot, if i remember correctly. i really love when movies goes completely off the fucking rails like that, and does it well.
Really interesting list. Thanks for putting Cure and Possession so high up, they deserve more appreciation! Cure, this movie stays on with you long after it has ended.
If you haven't seen it definitely watch "The Thing" (1982) it is masterfully done and the practical effects hold up like it was shot yesterday. The characters are rational and beliveable. It's a must watch in my book.
My criteria for what to include on this list was based on my letterboxd ratings. The 7 films I mentioned here are the only horror (if we count Perfect Blue) that I've given 5 stars. The Witch would probably be somewhere in my top 15.
The witch is my favorite film to, I feel like people always think it’s cool to like every old movie 😂 that old loud ass music from old movies always ruins it for me
Possession really. Aside from sam neal being a badass in everything. I found the movie boring and rediculous. And everyone talks about it like its the best damn film ever. If sam neal wasnt in it i would have passed.
What's your favorite horror movie?
Gotta be the OG Hellraiser, I'm a sucker for practical effects and the senobytes always spooked me as a kid

It follows is great, very curious to see what they do with the sequel👀 I still gotta watch Brandon's other films, enjoyed Infinity Pool a fair bit.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE IS "Who Can Kill a Child" 1976

One of my favorites as well! Originally thought of making a top 10 and in that case it would've definitely been on the list.
Great list all picks are 🔥🔥
"Rosemary's Baby" had a horrific real life twist with the director's wife, 8 months pregnant, murdered by the Manson family one year later.
I really loved The Wailing when I watched it recently. It blends a lot of the genre in general, but that climax had me on the edge of my seat.
Excellent choices. Have you seen, Kairo ? Same director as, Cure.
I've only seen Cure but that one is definitely on my list. Heard great things about it so I'm super curious.
It`s all subjective but I think Kairo is better than Cure.
The "Funny Games" remake of his own original is quite literally scene for scene the same film, and therefore unnecessary.
Rosemary's Baby is my fav horror movie and in my Top 10.
Perfect Blue is a horror film
Bro..there are so many great modern horror movies and you don't go passed like the 90s wtf? The Witch is the best horror ever made.
