Eld mandate without fixing the HOS rules is dangerous and unsafe(putting time on safety is not safe). This mandate is not safe deaths and accidents will go up. Already last year there were over 700 truck driver deaths and most of the drivers ran ELD's. This is what happens when you have people making rules that don't know anything about trucking. Your in denial if you think having a clock over your head is good and a save thing. I have seen how you ELD drivers roll into the truck stop in hurry to get back out not safe.
Funny......I never hear anyone talk about the time they were 15 miles from home and had to stop for 10hrs before they could drive again. Somehow you never hear about that guy who was loading in Chicago and was told to leave the yard 15mins before the 14hr rule was in violation forcing them to stop on Martin Luther King Blvd across from Malcom X park for 10hrs. Never hear from the guy who had to give up that good paying load on Friday and have to sit for 2 days in some Walmart parking lot until he could find another load on Monday......never hear from these guys......or the one who got a phone call at 2am by a dispatcher saying you can start driving now...according to your elog you are well rested....why is your truck not moving?
Jerry Reed I agree totally with u..that's why end of the year I'm done driving over the road. doing local ..I don't wanna be in that scenario where I'm 15 miles away and can't get home cause of these little equipment. .
That the e-log will coming is the most drivers own fault. when i see the log sheets from my buddies .... they dont write a logbook, they draw it. every day 670 miles. doesnt matter if they had waiting times, traffic, construction zones or speed limts. they working every day 15 and more hours .... that must stop.
Yes, they tend to leave those with e-logs alone because there is less chance of them finding a violation IF they know how to access the logs! Many aren't as computer savvy as they should be.
I would rather get inspected occasionally with paper logbook than give up the opportunity to drive 800 miles a day when needed or squish the time lost in traffic or during pick up.
I know E-logs are coming but when they are here to stay ill be long gone. The roads will be even more dangerous because everyone will be speeding to get their miles in for the week. Not everyone has a cake job that elogs will be ok for. Also trucks will be forced to drive during rush hour periods as well as during the night and day. I was on e-logs with my last company and id be sitting awake all day with no load then all the sudden I get a load and have to drive all night when I had slept the whole night before. E-logs only function is to hold accountability to only the driver. Companys and brokers know full well how a driver runs but yet have no accountability. All the DOT has to do is hold companies and brokers accountable for every load they give out. Problem solved. E-logs can and will be manipulated. The last company I was with was able to go in and change things. So whats to stop a owner operator with 2 or 5 or 7 trucks to do the same thing?? Also if your e-logs go down...which they will...then your back to paper logs til it gets fixed. Someone could purposely disconnect and run on paperlogs til he got inspected and all he has to do is say its broke for the last week and im getting it fixed when I get home. We can thank all the big companies for the push to e-logs because they know it will deplete owner operators and bring more drivers to run through their farm. I consider myself a safe driver. I get all my nights off and work the system to my advantage. I stop and nap when I need to. I work around rush hour. Im big on fuel mileage. All that goes away with e-logs in my opinion to some degree. Been trucking for 14 years and the rules keep changing for some groups interest and never the drivers. I cant think of one "pro driver" thing that has happened ever!!!
I’m home daily and on elogs....I still don’t get more than 3-4 hours of sleep..so what’s the difference if I’m off 10 hrs or less....I’m not sleeping for 10 hrs regardless.
You guys do know companies can edit your elogs don't you?Which is defeating the purpose of it.There is also a line 5 which is personal conveyance. You can use that when you are not under a load and when you haven't been dispatched a load.I think its an hr or 60 miles of PC that can be used in a 24 hr period but not sure on that.
Yes they can be edited which you are right defeats the purpose of them. However, companies tend not to want to change anything unless it directly benefits THEM, not the driver. It's a nice way to yank the driver's safety bonus when he makes an error on his e-logs.
True but FMCSA is all about safety and doesn't trust trk drivers so why trust companies.Dispatchers have access to your logs and can edit anytime they want. How do we know it doesn't happen.
patricia jensen And there lies the irony of the situation, we don't know. It's easy access for the company, and changes are easily made. They have a lot of power and control... and could honestly really make life miserable for a driver they didn't particularly care for, if they chose to. Yes, safety is safety, and with the capability to tap into the system, really defeats the purpose.
***** Thats exactly "Patricia's" point. if a driver has been driving for 8 hours and then decides that he is no longer fit to drive any longer that day, because he feels very tired and needs rest. - Dispatchers will call the driver and demand that he keep going. even when the driver said he was tired and sleepy. he also tells dispatcher that he already submitted the log, the dispatcher will then edit the log and in return tell the driver he now has more time to drive and if he does not continue driving, he will be terminated. Logs should not be able to be edited by "anyone" after it has been submitted by the driver. Driver should also be able to print out the log from his truck as security and backup of what he submitted.
Yes Sir Put the ball in their lap ! Always make it known via the Elog that you are Tired ( Fatigued ) or I'll or dangerous driving conditions exist snow/ice or equipment safety issues
I own a small fleet and we used to be over the road, we now just do local up to 400miles per day and total of about 1350miles a week! yes that's about it! no pushing drivers, and they always get their 10hours brake and even more ! and weekends off. anyway... the only thing that kills us is when I am looking for loads and booking loads with late pick up times when drivers already empty or waiting to get loaded or unloaded sometimes 5-6hours in many different facilities. so I do think Electronic Log Books is not good when delay at warehouses equal less loads to pick up when spent about 8hours a day waiting for loading and unloading.
adav1d Yes, it's an imperfect system for sure, especially when you're at the mercy of shippers and receivers. Common sense would dictate some form of off duty between loads. Dave
off duty for loading or unloading is great idea but truckers will abuse it just like they abuse any HOS rule..... the only rule that will make the log book looks good is detention pay rule. i see other post on here that say they get 80 to 90 dollar per hours? i never seen more then 35 per hour. but anyway if shippers will have to pay detention from the time the driver check in and out , the driver and company will make more money and wont be rushing and pushing the driver to make another run just to make up for all the lost time. the carriers is at the bottom of the food chain. we get screwed by brokers, shippers, receivers, road services over charge, then the worst is when DOT knock for audit and fine the carrier for violations drivers did thousands of dollars.then shut down the company. but all them big multimillion dollar carriers have so meny fatal accidents and logbook violations with ELDs and they never close them....MONEY!
There are 2 things I seriously don't like about these elog devices: *1.* I was not aware that these things can record in cab audio, WTF??? *2.* Your company can shutdown your truck remotely with ease, WTF???? Both have happened to me. :(
There are several components to learning electronics. One resource I found that succeeds in merging these is the Gregs Electro Blog (google it if you're interested) definately the most useful info that I've seen. Check out this super resource.
I am on truck pc and I agree and when it works it works only to a point. it's a cheep program my company has . it sucks. also they seem to have no mechanic who can install it so it doesn't move and quite working. I had to open my dash twice and wiggle wires to get it to work. yes I work for Roehl. I feel I was handed a truck with lots of problems. it's a 2013 international. point is its a 13 give me a new one
Also to look at. This is brought to you by a e-log company. As of now 06/16/14 the law has NOT even come to terms on how it should be written. Then needs to go to the house. ETA as of this 16months. Then next level. ETA 19-22 months. Once it becomes law ETA mandatory leeway will be another 3 years. QUIT ROLLING OVER AND PLAYING DEAD.! Stand up for yourself call your representative and say NO ON MANDATED E-LOGS. Before it's too late.
I hear you on that one. We've done our part. E-logs aren't necessarily a bad thing. It really depends on the company. We've run with them for over 3 yrs on PeopleNet and quite frankly, very very few complaints. Again, though, it depends on the carrier and if they are 'driver wise' and know how to work with the driver's on the system. However, the new PeopleNet we just installed is far pickier than the old one. THIS one also takes images of the truck and driver etc.... big brother is now watching 24/7. Personally, we don't have a problem with this.... don't really care. The principle of this bugs me, but just another trucking industry battle that I don't need to fight right now. Bigger fish to fry in trucking.
If I thought I would really make more money after everyone is required to have ELDs I'd be all for it . But drivers always get screwed and always will . And we won't see a significant raise in wages being forced too 11 legal hours a day driving !!!
If at the present rates, if everyone is held to a rigid 11 hours with no detention pay, most guys will not be able to afford to stay in the industry. I believe the mass exodus of good drivers from the industry into other lines of work will force trucking companys into either paying their good guys more or learning to live with a fleet of newbees and misfits. Dave
government care about money, do u now how many they earn on violations?, its not freedom, with e_ log book will be rush and unsafe, hopefully person who create eld mandate go to prison. freedom its mean u can choose between paper log book or elogs

E-logs are fine if you're working for a company that pays well. They only hurt guys who aren't. If you find you're making less money when you start running e-logs and the company refuses to bring you back to the same size cheque, you need to leave that company and tell them why you're leaving. There's a driver shortage and the good companies are looking to. Dave

Ted Gil I been elog for last 15 months twice I drove over my 11/14 causing elog to log it in red due to traffic. The first time I got inspected the officer ask about situation and I showed him where I was in traffic due to an accident. He said it was not a problem. I learn to put elogs on break stopping 11 hi hour clock while I sitting in traffic. I am lucky to have a company that bought a system that does not shut the truck down.

Before you develop e-log, work with shipper develop fast loading-unloading, parking, flexibility for traffic and bad weather, etc....
How do you write a truck up digital for repairs

I used to walk an hour everyday,I dont now.i do however,like the sleep drive cycle,the consistency.-neal a.

Good presentation and well stated.
And thanks to electronic log books, now you even have time to stop and get your nails done!
Mission Impossible 😂😂😂. You are absolutely right brother . Now government babysitting us.
And if you do run out of time to get to a safe parking area, ours have a print out, and you just write the reason on the back of the printout...

oooh, a log book is so hard, never had e log, never will
Neither am I. I'm hanging it up before dec 18th 2017...
Is Walmart a good company to drive for
For company drivers yes.... Not for owner ops

The future!
Wait until everybody is on elog and you spend half of your 14 hour searching for a parking, good luck with that come Dec 18.
just makes things worse but is a good tool although makes do lot stupid things
👍😎👍

Ted Gil No one. I speak the truth, Ted. I've been on the e-logs for a few years now. (Dave)

Yes !
Exactly
Truck Drivers must start demanding to be paid for all of their time and service !
Elogs prove where the truck is and for how long
The Drivers should be paid hourly for Detention and equipment repair work or
any company truck business interest
Here's what's good about your wonderful elogs you're so big fan of, over the period of 4 months my company lost 1/2 OTR drivers ,now they work local and regional, lost a lot of loads and brokers are threatening to stop any cooperation, my paycheck shrank 1/2 and at the same time I was forced to spend 30% more time on the road , I'm local now but I hear from the desperados that still do OTR they start to receive phone calls in the middle of the night as a reminder that they need to drive now, I don't feel like to give you 1000 more examples happening daily on the road that prove how incompatible the eld is with truckers life, you can check it online for yourself, to be advocating this garbage I can only think of somebody that gets paid to do so, but wait...I remember I lived through it before, long time ago in a faraway land where they dictated me how much I can work and how much money I can make, how rich I can be LOL... with regulations on every corner, it was called communism and everybody knows how it ended
I cant wait for full blown ELD cause it will never work they are shooting themselves in the foot walmart will have trucks taking 34 hout resets in the dock doors hahahahaha
This driver has been driving long before some of these whiny cry baby video making drivers were born, they could learn from videos from drivers like this guy.

E log sucks for livestock haulers. Lets get rid of it.😛
