  • Worried you might find it just too difficult to get rid of all those possessions collected over years and years? Feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of even beginning a journey toward a more minimalistic life? This might be a good video for you to get you thinking about it all before you give up.
    Find me everywhere I am on the Internet here: timchilders.bio.link.
    I started this channel in order to document life as it gets lived. It's about where I live, how I live, where I travel, why I travel, and so much more. Eclectic is a good word for the content to be found here. I hope you will come along for the ride!
    Affiliate and other monetization links:
    Want to buy me a cup of coffee to keep the creative juices flowing? You can on my Ko-Fi account here: ko-fi.com/timchilders
    Looking to buy camera gear and accessories for photography or video? Search Adorama, one of the largest in the world, with this affiliate link. If you buy something, I get a few pennies here and there: adorama.rfvk.net/oqB7zE
    Wanting to get money back every time you buy gas (along with other purchases are online stores and restaurants)? Upside might be something you'd like to explore. Take a look around at their website at upside.com. Then, when you download the app, use code TIM22542 when you sign up.
    Want to get money back when you go grocery shopping? Probably my biggest money saver. That's an app called iBotta. Use my referral code to sign up and start getting money back today! ibotta.onelink.me/iUfE/8cc13c...
    Last, would you like to earn money back on nearly everything you purchase? You can probably find what your looking for at one of the stores represented by Rakuten. Choose from getting money back or getting American Express Reward Points. My link is www.rakuten.com/r/TCHILD175?eeid=28187

    My nephew was once told he had to pick up at least half of his room before he could go out. Seconds later he was out the door saying he had cleaned the top half.

    I have let go of many plastic containers of photos. Now I have half a Wal Mart bag left. None of the kids have ever looked at the photos . My Grandmother's jewelry was difficult to let go of. My memories of her are still intact. Lol. I have decluttered to the point of fitting into a 11 x 12 ft bedroom. It feels so good to have little to take care of. I have no desire to take care of material things. I started my own business when I retired and I am enjoying it so much. I am enjoying this time of life very much. The less I own the better I feel. 😂😂

    By donating most of what we didn’t love or use, I was able to tap into my love for cooking! I’ve been spending a lot of time in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes from scratch. I used to spend all my time cleaning, organizing, and decluttering stuff.

    I am a baby boomer as well and I grew up with very frugal parents and, sadly, I found it stifling rather than something to learn from. As soon as I started making my own money, it was “get out of my way, I’ve got stuff to buy.” Oh, how I regret that. You’re right about things becoming part of the family. That’s exactly what I felt and why it’s taking me a very long time to get rid of things. Things I really wish I never had in the first place. I envy people who are just starting out and can be very mindful about what they choose to bring into their lives. It’s so much harder to go backwards. However, I am still plodding on to find that perfect place where I have just enough and I feel at peace in my surroundings. 💪🏻😌🌿

      Excellent video today!
      I'm someone looking at being age 80 soon.
      So many stages of life...and so much "stuff" has come + gone through the years.
      Be it working clothes, kids clothes + toys, knick knacks, bedding, Christmas ornaments etc. etc.
      Now I'm in the last stage of life so while I'm able I have diligently gone through our whole house only keeping what we truly need with few exceptions. (One exception is my hobby of genealogy...so a balance in that regard) Our married kids homes are already full ..they don't want our stuff so my advice is declutter while physically able dear friends. I had charge of my parents home after they passed + it's a big time consuming job.
      (For the future you might consider very short videos sometimes of 3 to 5 minutes like "Money Mom" does)

    Someone here on YT said to think of your space as "living space" and not "storage space". For storage space think of stores as your storage spaces, or storage lockers. When you need something just go to the store and get it, and let it sit there "in storage" until you need it. Another rule I heard was the 20/20 rule. If it is under 20 dollars and you can replace it in 20 minutes go ahead and get rid of it if you haven't used it in a year or so. lol. I'm working on it, my place still looks like a storage center. We don't need duplicates of things, it helps to just have 1 of something at a time. Learning....want a more peaceful, streamlined space.

    While I was certainly attached to mementoes when I was young, as I approach 70 I have very little left. I was never into consumerism or one-upmanship. I'm not particularly interested in the aesthetics of minimalism but I like the feeling of not being overwhelmed. This change happened after a medical diagnosis so I suppose I am doing my form of Swedish Death Cleaning (for real!) and I like the sense of peace and reflection it has brought me. Although it's a cliché, everyone will have their own journey.I know bare walls don't suit most people!

    “Cherished companions to our personal stories.” This is very well said and so very true. I look around my home and see items that have been passed down to me as I am the oldest and only granddaughter. The ancestors before me have made me the “keeper” of our shared family story. As I don’t have any children and only one great niece I’m positive that the “cherished” items will end with me. Thus my monthly and ongoing effort to minimize and embrace letting go of whatever doesn’t bring me joy. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us.

Circles are okay, except eventually, I get dizzy and "shut" the door; therefore, procrastinating kicks in. Not sure how to work through this, but maybe one day something might click in my head and heart. It will work out somehow since I now understand the "why." You summed this topic up perfectly. The trend today is minimalism, white walls, white cabinets, white furniture, and plants. Those who follow this constantly strive to eliminate as much as possible and boast "I got rid of 80% of my belongings. However, for many, they are laden with guilt because they struggle to pare down their possessions. They like having extras. They enjoy looking around their homes and remembering how they were able to purchase nice things. So much of either stance is opinion-based, not necessarily a truth. I believe you are right in creating a balance. We are glutted with consumerism, yet the other extreme feels stark and void of creativity and personalization. The minimalists try to spread their beliefs to everyone, guaranteeing freedom and peacefulness. Yet some of the follower wanna-be minimalists are loaded with guilt and shame as they struggle to conform to this doctrine. Balance in all things. And, to each his own.

    Hi, Tim! I've had to learn that possessions have different meanings to different people. Since I don't live alone, I must consider those around me and how they want to live. People are more important to me than things. My heart's desire is for everyone here to see our home as their happy place. So what if my garage is packed to the rafters with the empty boxes of things long gone! Someone here wants it that way and I'm on-board with whatever they want, because I love them. Thanks for the video, Tim. Have a lovely day!

      Humble, oh if only I could relax around what others treasures.... I on a journey to declutter that, I really made time for after I retired. With the passing of my husband, I now have all, the clutter to deal with most Lyon myown.. My adult children have helped, but it is harder to declutter, others stuff once they have passed. I don't want my children to have to deal with truck loads of minutia, when I am on to eternal life. I have to remind myself things are not the people, I need to have less, for my piece of mind. I hope you will seriously find what you want in your personal space. My greatest joy has been giving friends and family things they have expressed and interests in, that were once, lost in the overabundance of my home. Things without the people that treasure them are just clutter... I am still looking for that item that embodies my late husband and looking forward to the time when I will be toast point were I will decorate with that item....

    Sentimentalism can be difficult to break. Me, only things I inherited were my mother's cloths and inexpensive costume jewelry. After 30 years, I finally bit the bullet and took the cloths to Good Will and all the jewelry boxes. I gathered all the jewelry, put in a nice looking crystal cookie jar, and now sits on my dresser. Condensed. And reminds me of her whenever I look at it. Be careful about being too sentimental about things that take up a lot of room and not serving a purpose. Consider saving a part of it. Like maybe the leather on that old chair. Or take a very nice picture and hang that on the wall instead. Just some suggestions.

    My minimalist approach is for my kids. I don't want them to be strapped with all this stuff we have accumulated. To them it means nothing with the exception of very specific items such as my husband's leather club chair. I have experienced some weird attachment to some things like Christmas decor or everyday decor. I have come to realize that this is all nonsense. I love my kids too much to leave them with this task. As our priest once said; " when we die, there will not be a Uhaul trailer filled with your stuff, attached to your hearse, so give it up!"

    💜 This Topic and This Type of Video. It Truly Give's us Pause to "Go Within" and Think 🤔 on some "Thing's" that may have Never even Crossed Our Mind. One REAL Thing that has R-e-a-l-l-y "Bothered" Me is . . . . People Spend A-L-O-T of $ $ $ on "Real Estate" (Their Home) and Fill it to the Brim with S-T-U-F-F ! ! Then "Gripe" about their LACK of Storage. So then, FILL the Garage FULL of STUFF, so then the Expensive, Nice Vehicle's are Parked Outside to then Be "Ruined" By All of the Element's, 🤔 Or Have to or maybe even in Addition to, Rent a Storage Unit, which is Expensive. For ALL the STUFF ! ! The Reality of Everything STORED is . . . . After awhile, Can't Remember What is Stored, It'll Never Be Used Again and then Someday, Someone will Have to " Deal " With It. So Where was the Real GRATITUDE "Shown" for ALL the STUFF ?

    We recently stayed in a 2 bedroom Airbnb in Murfreesboro, TN. It was the perfect feeling of minimalism for me. The house had everything we needed (well, almost - I am under 5’ tall and really NEEDED a stepstool!). There was plenty of storage still available. If it was filled with our personal items, there would still be enough room for everything we wanted to keep. I am using this as my model as I declutter our home 🏡 ❤

    Our insatiable appetite for more stuff is the engine of our consumer economy. When we stop buying stuff, the economy collapses.

    • @Good-DaySunshine
      @Good-DaySunshine 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      ...then we need to rethink our economy and gear it differently. There is something wrong with a society that pushes people into constantly wanting more of what they already have plenty of, especially when some people are not able to buy even the bare minimum. 😢

      Don’t forget, most of these unnecessary purchases are paid for with a credit card at 36% interest and never paid off, guaranteeing a lifetime of wage slavery. The stuff you needed to have will be in a landfill long before the debt is paid off.

      @Good-DaySunshine 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@steveearnshaw5426 Steve, I understand your concern but the number of people who have given up credit cards is growing. I think it would be safe to say "some" people...but not state your thoughts to be all inclusive. After all, some people buy at thrift stores, garage sales, etc. This has taken us away from the point Tim is making- but again, I understand your thoughts. We can agree to (partially) disagree? ✌🏼😁

    Your parents reminded me of The Grapes of Wrath, a book I just started. I hope minimalism will go on forever and save us from trash in landfills. It is difficult, to let go perfect things. With inherited jewelry I found a solution: I let it melt and make my own jewelry. So my ancestors are with me, but purged.

    Totally agree on everything in this video, but was drinking tea while watching and almost sprayed my keyboard from laughing at the monkey story. But seriously, I don't know who I've been trying to keep up with all these years but have most certainly failed and still have too much stuff. As I've gotten closer to retirement, I've ignored the pressure to be someone I'm not and plan to tackle all this stuff gently like peeling an onion: one layer at a time.

    I see a problem with minimalism. Its focus is on outcomes. Wabi Sabi is a Zen Buddhist philosophy that does the same thing but on being one with natures fleeting properties.

    Minimalism is way overrated and hyped up these days. I have worked hard to accumulate my things and have discovered thru out the years that quality overcomes quantity. I like my stuff and it serves me well. But too much requires too much work. I think it’s greatly confused with tidiness. Tidiness is having clean well organized things to enjoy. Great video and thanks for sharing. Well done and great points. ❤
