Given no other info aside from medals is mentioned for each gymnast, this is a strange ranking. The top 5 in terms of medal count is Simone Biles, Shannon Miller, Nastia Luikin, Alicia Sacramone and Aly Raisman.
I disagree with Shannon's ranking. I think she should've been number 2 (and in my heart she will always be number 1, she was and is my favorite gymnast forever. Loved her style and elegance)
Alicia is the 4th most decorated American female gymnast but Shannon Miller was the top for years (retired after 1996 Olympics) until Simone Biles. Top 5 are Biles, Miller, Nastia, Alicia and Aly Raisman
I know Marylou won all around medal but there were many gymnasts so much better than her. She got put in there more for her fame than her talent I think
@@nmelgar74You're certainly welcome to your opinion. However, I 100% disagree. At the time, Mary Lou was the best female gymnast on the Olympic team. Now for future ladies, as skills increased so did abilities. I don't know if Mary Lou would have increased her abilities to match the newbies. But isn't that true for everybody?
The thing with Mary Lou that people forget, and I’m not saying she wasn’t GREAT and made history for the US, is that Russia was boycotted from these games and certainly would have medaled perhaps beating her
Fun list. Simone is the undisputed queen! I really thought Shannon would be second, I’m pretty sure she is second in world/Olympic medal count in the US. Nastia third, Sacramone is also up there. Agree Zmeskal needs an HM.
Mmmm love Gabby but better than Shannon Miller?? And Suni 10th? She medaled in the all around two Olympics in a row including a gold (with kidney disease), she is ATLEAST on the same level as Nastia and Shawn (and they didn’t have to compete w Simone lol which def helps give them an advantage w medal count)
Kim Zmeskal would eat all these gymnasts up.... but nice nod to Kerri Strug I like how Strug Dawes and Miller are standing next to each other in the 92 olympic medal ceremony and the 96 medal ceremony
I agree with the choices (mostly), but not the ranking. Aly Raisman is way too low. In terms of world and Olympic medals, she’s the third most decorated American gymnast. And while Carly Patterson and Shawn Johnson were both great when they competed, they didn’t have the career longevity that Aly had. Raisman made two Olympic teams and medaled in both. Also, no disrespect to Mary Lou Retton, but she competed in a very weak era and only really had a breakthrough at one big meet. She won at a boycotted Olympics, and never won a single world championship medal of any color. Sorry, but while being the “first” to win an all-around title and putting American gymnastics on the map is something you can’t take away from her, that does not make her competitive of greatest American gymnasts. Additionally, I think that Shannon Miller has way more medals than Gabby Douglas ever got, so she should be ranked higher. Also, how does Chellsie Memmel not get even an honorable mention? 10. Chellsie Memmel 9. Dominique Dawes 8. Carly Patterson 7. Sunisa Lee 6. Shawn Johnson 5. Aly Raisman 4. Gabby Douglas 3. Nastia Liukin 2. Shannon Miller 1. Simone Biles I would have left Mary Lou off and added Chellsie TBH. Otherwise, good list - I think I mostly just disagree with the order.
Why would you put Nastia over Gabby? Gabby has two Olympics to here name and more Olympic gold medals. You praised the longevity of Aly, correctly, but didnt dock Nastia for her inability to make two olympic teams and Gabbys ability to not only do so but also to do so and actually have a shot at winning another AA medal. She qualified in 4th and her qualified scores would have secured her the silver in the AA final if the US could have sent more than 2 athletes.
@@jonperry501 Good question. So here is my reasoning, even though Gabby made a second Olympic team, she did not compete elite for most of that quad. She basically came back the year before the Olympics and made the team. And she was also not ranked for her entire run in her first quad either. Nastia was competitive throughout the entire 2005-2008 quad. Gabby was competitive in 2011-2012, and then again from 2015-2016. So really, she has about the same “active” longevity as Nastia has (about 4 years). Also, longevity is only one criteria used to judge “greatness”. And while it is important, there are other metrics which must be considered as well. If I were judging based SOLELY on longevity, then Dominique Dawes is the greatest American gymnast! She’s the only one to make 3 Olympics and she medaled in all of them. The only reason she’s not ranked higher on my list is because only 1 of her 4 Olympic medals is an individual medal, and she never won an all-around title. While it is true that Nastia failed to make a second Olympic team, you have to look at what she was able to accomplish when she competed. The reason I rank Nastia ahead of Gabby has to do with the overall number of medals she’s won, especially as an individual gymnast. Nastia won more medals at a single Olympics than Gabby did in two! Nastia won 5 medals in 2008, and 4 of them are individual medals. Gabby won 3 between the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, and only 1 is an individual medal. Moreover, the Olympics is not the only thing that counts. You also have to look at World Championships. Gabby has 3 world championships medals, including a silver all-around title. That’s impressive, but then Nastia also has a world all-around silver with a total of 9 medals. Six of her 9 medals are individual medals and 3 of them are gold. This means that she dominated most of her rivals in more events. When you look at total international medals, Nastia has 14 total (making her the 3rd most decorated American gymnast behind Biles and Miller). Gabby only has 6 at that level, and 4 of them are team medals. In my opinion that puts Nastia ahead of Gabby but by a significant margin.
@@wheresbaby7783 I agree, Aly was not the most “graceful” gymnast in terms of artistry. But she was one of the most consistent, and had a well enough choreographed routine to win an Olympic gold and silver on floor exercise. You could make the same argument for Jade Carey, but again - Olympic floor gold medalist! 🥇 🤷🏽♂️
I agree with the addition of Chellsie, but would also consider Zmeskal. I'd place Gabby lower and Aly and Shawn higher. Aly deserves praise for her role in the Nassar scandal, too, which is a service to the sport. And Chellsie for still sharing her passion for the sport and being active in it, even with no chance of adding to her medal collection.
Alicia Sacramone at the 2010 World Championships she became the most successful American gymnast with 9 medals, then they became 10 despite not competing due to injury in Tokyo in 2011. After her, only Simone Biles has won more medals on the international stage to date. She wasn't placed in the top 10, shame!
shes not just "the greatest american gymnast" shes the greatest gymnast in my opinion male or female she has more world medals and records then anyone and tied with shannon for most olympic medals by a american gymast
While Gabby does below on this list, she belongs 10th, not 2nd. She only ever won 1 individual Olympic medal, and most of her medals were team. Ali Raison was on both Olympic teams she was on and medaled individually in both and completed in the team event in both. You can argue, she should of not made the 2016 team at all
It almost certainly won't be this quad if we do. Even if she was back in the gym six months ago, she really doesn't have time to get back into Olympic competitive shape with only about 15 months to go before the Games. I really wish people would just leave the poor girl alone and let her enjoy planning her wedding. She'll come back if she wants to.
August 2024 answered your question. She not only competed in Paris, but made history as the most decorated gymnast of all time and the oldest gymnast to win gold

Even I Love Shawn. My favorite gymnast. I've watched her balance bean a million times. Her short career was unfortunate
Shannon Miller will always be the best
Who cares about the order... There all amazing and gymastics sure is evolving
God! I thought I was was good at level 9...
Suni or Shannon should definitely be 2nd place!
Kim Zmeskal would eat all these gymnasts up.... but nice nod to Kerri Strug
I like how Strug Dawes and Miller are standing next to each other in the 92 olympic medal ceremony and the 96 medal ceremony
Simone just got a 5th move named after her
mary lou above shawn johnson?? no
Olga Korbut will FOREVER BE THE GOAT 🐐🐐🐐🐐❤️🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
Kim Zmeskal should have been on this list as the first American woman to win a world championship.
Raisman is a goddess. End of discussion.
Shannon Miller #2
10. Chellsie Memmel
9. Dominique Dawes
8. Carly Patterson
7. Sunisa Lee
6. Shawn Johnson
5. Aly Raisman
4. Gabby Douglas
3. Nastia Liukin
2. Shannon Miller
1. Simone Biles
I would have left Mary Lou off and added Chellsie TBH.
Aly Raisman could not dance at all I mean a blind bull can dance better than her
@@jonperry501 Good question.
I like your list overall but Shannon Miller should be #2.
Katelyn Ohashi should be on here if she isn't.
I like this collection but what's with the narration? that can't be an actual person
Kim gehört definitiv in die Top 10
i am not sure why dawes was so far down in the rankings. I grew up loving her and shannon miller.
Dominique Marceanu should have had a nod as well Jmo
Very bad comment😔 Speedy mixture of facts, medals, tornaments. Nothing to remember🥺
You can argue, she should of not made the 2016 team at all
Thought I was going to shit myself if you didn’t put Nastia on the list!!…and #3 sounds about right, thank you! ❤🇨🇱. Sooo many Texans to list.
The USA is so blessed with all these amazing superhumans!
I'm surprised Domique Moceanu and Chellsie Memmel were not even honorable mentions.
I have a question you said that Simone Biles was the best female gymnast. Do you think this, or did you forget to say American gymnast?
This is great but who’s in the thumbnail? It’s driving me crazy because I can’t place them!
Simon hello
I wonder if we’ll see Simone compete again??
she said she might be back for paris olympics but right now she is just trying to focus on her mental health and have fun with her fiance
We just did at the 2023 American Classics. And it seems like nothing has changed; she won everything by 5 points.
Simply amazing!
August 2024 answered your question. She not only competed in Paris, but made history as the most decorated gymnast of all time and the oldest gymnast to win gold
Suni has surpassed Carly imo
Why is Liukin so much higher than Johnson?
These lists are always so divisive & subjective. I can think of at least another 3 gymnasts who were left of *this* list entirely who deserved to be considered.
It’s not the number of medals. It is who has elegance, artistry, beautiful lines and technique. Nastia hands down. For me Simone is an incredible tumbler not an artistic gymnast.
It is the number of medals, success in a sport= accomplishments/accolades. Thats how it is in other sports, you gymnastic fans need to get with the program and accept that yall sport is no different from that culture. And Simone participates in Artistic Gymnastics, no matter how yall try to discredit her, she still participates in the sport and has the most medals.
Gabby Douglas and Shannon Miller should be switched imo
No mention of Kim Zmeskal? Downvoted.
Let’s get real. Simone is the most decorated in the US not internationally. There’s a competition there every week. International she’s not even in the top 25.
MLR wouldn't have sniffed a medal at a fully competed Olympics.
shannon should be #2
Simone may be the greatest but she’s not my favorite. Suni, Shawn, Carly, gabby and Shannon I much enjoy all their routines more.
And that’s fine because everyone has their preferences, as long as you can like them and not discredit and downplay Simone.
Not sure how Gabby is #2. She's good, but not 2nd best.
How is Suni Lee number 10? She should at least be top 5 since she is an all around champion. Shannon Miller needs to be moved up a bit as well. Kim Zmeskal should be in the talks to since she is a world champion.
Mary?
