Hi. What propeller are you using?

      Hi Daniel,
I really don’t know. I was frustrated when I made the lower horsepower motor, we messed with propellers etc. I was lucky enough to come across dutchharbormarine.com duke made a deal with me I paid, cash plus my motor and he installed and tested the 60 hp motor and put the correct propeller on it for our size and weight. They are out of Berlin lake Ohio
+1 (330) 584-4174. They would have the info. I’m typically a do it yourself guy but my health has been poor and anything boat mechanical that my son and I can’t figure out easily I have them do it. They are great!

Nice Vid! I see that your son was able to recover the boat solo which is pretty neat, I'd be looking to do a lot of solo launch with this boat too. Any tips on launch/recovery with this boat or is it pretty normal? Glad to see the 60hp is working out nicely for you, when you said the 30hp was doing 8mph, is that on WOT? I'm trying to get away with a smaller outboard for weight, and mostly budget. I see you may have mounted rod holders to the bow of the boat? did you have to drill through or how do those screw hold up?

      Hello DtF!
Launch recovery is normal but wind moves it easy, be prepared for that. As you see that was his first time pretty much solo. I did edit out a couple seconds of me barking orders though😜 if you tune a 30 with the right propeller and have no extra weight it might work. I’m 6’2”. 500, son 6’1”. 240 wife 5’9”140 motor about 160 boat us 995 empty no console nothing. Console about 60, helm seat 36, about 300lbs extra gear the numbers do t work for a 30. If your build and capacities are different then a 30 may work for you, but based on my experience and my videos 30 is out 60 is in, and if in some future fantasy world ever works for me, dual 90’s🤔 all mounted gear is either non weight bearing and regular wood screws or anything weight bearing like rod holders toggler brand toggle bolts. They hold up well.

Hi AH! How much higher than recommended can you go?

Hi AH! Interesting you mention load guides on trailer, tell me we just discovered the end of our right bunk is bent, appearing to be broken. Evidently my son says boat last loaded crooked. I’m trying to figure out how you could break a bunk before I repair replace. Any ideas? I have some pics of how it sits.

My 30 hp mercury gets my 435 up to 25 mph with 2 passengers and load. Maybe I'll get a jackplate in the future.

Was 30hp mounted too low ?

      HiBH!
I believe it was a combination of wrong propeller and way too much weight on the boat. We could never get the motor past 3500rpms during break in and speeds never exceeded single digits.

Sasquatch GA I want to get the Whaly 435 but cant find anyone who owns one. I am looking to go offshore up to 2 miles here in Florida. How does it handle in rough water ?

      Hi BH!
I’ve only known 1 person who owns a 500 r and used it in the ocean, it handles well. I’ve seen some new zeland videos on TH-cam I believe they’re 400 series and do well in ocean. If you call Whalyboatsusa and ask for Roy he may be able to get you in touch with some one that may have the 435 in your area to check out. Roy sells them in the USA. We only use my 500 in freshwater, Lake Erie, and smaller inland lakes. Erie water can get big like the ocean and if there is a craft advisory we don’t go out but in a couple foot high waves it handles well but not too fun.

The reason you didn't get above 8 mph is because you didn't get the boat to go on plane. With lower prop pitch you could have easily gotten it to say 20 mph. If the prop pitch is wrong, 60 wouldn't get you on plane either and it would stall out at the hull speed of 8 mph. The 435 is rated for 30 HP and the 435R is rated for 40 HP. Since the R is already the professional model, they would never rate it low. There is a reason for these ratings beyond what your transom can hold. The 435 has a fairly flat bottom and will start chine walking when oversped. With the 500 kg in humans you put in the boat that's likely not an issue but if your son goes solo and does a little joy ride at the wrong swell things can quickly go from really really fun to expensive and painful.

Thanks for the info, very informative. We never were able to get the boat over 8 with the 30 but it’s good with the 60. The 500r we have was supposed to weigh 800+ but it seems more like 1000. I did notice there is a guy on TH-cam that has a 500r with a 30 he goes crabbing he seems to get better than 8 but not more than 10 or 12. I wonder how do you tell what prop, pitch, size to figure it out? I didn’t do a good job when we bought it. There’s a lotta guys and gals that would love it if you could help them.
      Peace
      G
