They are great boats. The more I look at other traditional styles of boats the more grateful I am for the Whaly. The ease of ownership and not having to baby it while I'm out on the water totally make up for how unrefined the boat actually is. Thanks so much for commenting and subscribing! Hoping to get a winter boat trip in soon!
I have the exact same setup except it’s a tiller outboard right now, getting a Suzuki 15hp remote steering and now that I have seen this I really can’t wait to hit the water!
I have the Suzuki DF20A and it's pretty quiet as far as 20hp motors go. I want to run the steering cables differently and I have an email into a company to see if I can get hydraulic steering hooked up to this motor. It's way overkill but the bends I want to make with the steering cable would be nearly impossible with the rotary mechanical steering that I have now. I have some pretty lofty goals for outfitting this boat and it'll take some custom work but I reckon by this time next year it'll be everything I hoped when I first got it. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! There will be more Whaly adventures soon!
@@srileo Steering cables are available in many different lengths. The reason I’m looking at hydraulic steering is because of how I want to run the cables between the steering wheel and motor. Mechanical steering cables have a bend radius that is too wide for what I want to do. The no feedback rotary system I have on there now works great- the boat handles well and the steering feels smooth through the steering wheel. Plus it’s very simple and way cheaper. The only reason I’m researching the possibility of hydraulic steering is to hide the steering lines to make the boat look more “finished”. Let’s be honest: the Whaly is not going to win any beauty contests...it’s very simple and utilitarian. My goal for this project is to add some features that really don’t belong on a rescue boat...electronics, captains chairs, storage, etc. and for it to look as finished as possible with as few visible components as possible. That’s a tough goal for a hull that has no hollow space to run lines whatsoever. The more I experience the boat the more refined my ideas get.
That’s awesome man! What kind of boating will you be using it for? I just got the navigation arch delivered yesterday. Took it to get some custom fabrication done. I have some footage to edit for another video and have another trip planned in a little over a week. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! Stay tuned…I have some different types of videos coming out soon!
I’ve been waiting for this video for such a long time! Thank you. Im considering a Whaly too and was going back and forth over console vs tiller. Looks like the console is a lot more enjoyable!! I want to use the whaly same way as you.
Thank you so much! I’ve also been looking forward to this video for a while 😂. There will be plenty of Whaly content to come! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks so much! I was hoping those comments would get some attention, haha. Thanks for watching and commenting! I plan on heading out again in a few weeks for another Whaly trip, so stay tuned!
Nice video Frecky! A long ways from paddling down the Pine Creek or Clarion in the XP huh? Cool hang with the beavers! That is a very cool little boat. I have never owned a motorized boat but that thing looks sweet!
Not at all. These are designed to be mounted on either side and to work with the handle facing either direction. This was my first time doing any kind of outboard motor work and it wasn't intimidating at all. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
In some ways it’s very similar and at the same time very different. Obviously the Whaly is slower, but for me that is a benefit. It means I can appreciate my surroundings more. For me the jet ski had two speeds...either idling or full throttle...keeping the throttle at any position except 100% would make my thumb and forearm really uncomfortable in short order. I took the jet ski into the open ocean but that probably wasn’t the greatest idea- they aren’t much fun unless the water is glassy smooth in my opinion (with the exception of catching air, obviously, lol). I think that working on the outboard is much easier than the engine on the jet ski as well and I think there’s more aftermarket support for outboards. The Whaly has its share of customization issues but it’s such a simple boat that you can pretty much personalize it however you want with some ingenuity. Plus there’s the benefit of being capable of carrying more people. I don’t regret the change.
Nice video. What do you use for your camera set up? My Whaly 370 should be here any day...I can't wait!! I went with the Suzuki 25 tiller and tilt. Looking to have some epic adventures.. like you!
Oh man, I wish I’d have realized that I could go up to 25hp. Did you order yours through Nautical Ventures? I have a wicked horror story that I’m dying to share once I get the rest of my stuff from them. I use a bunch of different cameras...I just swapped my GoPro’s for DJI Actions (great move) and I use that for shots where there’s a good possibility of things getting wet or tossed around, I use a DJI Osmo Pocket for timelapses and panning “follow me” shots, I use a Sony RX100 VII for stuff on dry ground or when I need a zoom (like with all the birds in this video), and a DJI Mavic Pro for drone shots. I have a ton of different ancillary gear like a cable cam dolly, a dome, different lights for in the field and and at home, a few different mics...it’s ridiculous but everything packs down real secure, compact, and organized and the system I have for the equation for most of my videos works well with the recording equipment I use. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I have some more trips in the works and as soon as I get my stuff from Nautical Ventures I’m going to completely redo the mechanical part of the boat and I think it’s pretty cool how I plan of rigging it so stay tuned !
Holy crap...that's a lot of camera gear. I have a single GoPro camera that I'm still getting used to! I am in the midwest (Mpls), so I ordered mine thru Whaly Boats USA. There's some shipping delays due to Covid, but we'll see how it all plays out. Mine will be the dinghy for our big boat. Planning on doing a few mods, but nothing crazy. I'll keep you posted. Hoping to start a TH-cam channel once my wife and I become full-time liveaboards and take the big boat South. Keep the vids coming...love 'em! Can't wait to hear that horror story...

I really love your boat bro... 🌝🌝
