While Playboy and the lifestyle associated with it is shady as hell, the horror that happened to Dorothy was caused by a control freak who couldn't cope with losing that control. It is an awfully sad case.

Playboy was just another example of how Dorothy was objectified her entire life with Paul: she was viewed as a possession by all the men surrounding her, never an autonomous person

Especially as the original text was supposed to be interpreted as darkly satirical exposé on gross humbert types, but the media chose instead to take his side and paint lolita (a literal child) as the villain. So now disgusting men like the killer in this story feel like they're the one being taken advantage of. So messed up.

She sounds like she was surrounded with puffed up, self-important men who cared about her as deeply and as long because of what she could do for them or their image. She deserved better in life.
Hollywood Graveyard featured her grave at least once. She's in an open sunny area and its quite nice.

Could you, pretty please, do a video on the case of Starr Faithful, the 1920s socialite and murder victim? There's a pretty good time-line of her last days and hours leading up to her death.
I love your videos and I've been watching you since your Thelma Todd video, specifically. Appreciate your hard work and I'm looking forward to some satisfying solved cases this month. 💜

This is one I have been wanting to see, too. That poor girl was nothing more than a cash cow to her family, who never even bothered to claim her cremains. She was even subjected to a "sex surrogate" her family paid for off the street, and she pined away for a married ship's doctor. An East Coast Beth Short if there ever was one.

I read about this case years ago. Apparently, her husband pushed her into trying out for the magazine, and then people from television and movies started calling and he saw himself losing control of her. Then he did something that was the ultimate act of control. He was a loser from day one.

Actually the drinking age at that time was 18 in 1979. It wasn't raised to 21 until 1984, so she was able to drink when she worked at the "castle" in LA. Not that being "of age" ever stop anyone from drinking, especially in LA.

    • @JJoy-bk8yr

I remember hearing and reading about this case, years ago and I was shocked over this beautiful young woman's death, especially as it related to Hugh Hefner and the Playboy magazines, etc. I've heard over the years about what went on at the Playboy mansion and it didn't surprise me, at all. May the soul of Dorothy Stratten, rest in eternal peace.🌹 Have a fantastic weekend. Take care 🦋

Dorothy had something Paul and the other men around her did not have a deep loyalty. She was even willing to drop her new relationship with Peter and go back with Paul to Canada because despite how he treated her she was still grateful to him and didn't want to hurt him. Was she naive or just a good hearted person who didn't operate the same way they did.

  • @marrz5266
    @marrz5266 ปีที่แล้ว +6

We are all naive in our twenties. I am 21 years old and I can recognize how naive I tend to be. I have just got out of a relationship with a man who does not care about me and made it clear from the start. Still I had hope that he didn’t mean that. Clearly he did. That is how naive I can be.
She seemed so sweet and was beautiful. Unfortunately in this cruel world sweetness and beauty is taken advantage of. Especially by the entertainment industry. These qualities sell and attract fame. I hope she rests in peace and that people stop viewing her as a “women child.” And understand that everyone is capable of being naive. She didn’t deserve death for it.

@M R I am talking about this particular case. And yes man child is also a problematic term. It doesn't change the fact the that terms woman child is used as a sexual term where girls and women were/are treated as a child while doing grown up sexual things. No where did I indicate this does not happen to boys ...and you implying that I am whining about a serious subject matter because you feel personal about does not help your argument much. Dorothy was such a beautiful woman. She's lovely in pictures, but seeing the video footage of her gives her beauty a whole other dimension. I can only imagine how striking she would have been in person. She probably stopped traffic, even in a town like LA that is absolutely overflowing with beautiful people.
She had such a sweetness and elegance in her voice and mannerisms. It's so sad that she was pretty much just being used for her looks, her body, and her money. Had she lived beyond the age of 20 I feel like she would have progressed beyond playboy and smaller roles and could have had a good career in tv and or movies. I could also see her being a highly paid top model. She had the looks and the height for it.
Her husband was such a selfish and evil piece of human garbage.

This is a good video. Covers the material rather well. I remember this when it happened, since I am only 4 years older than Stratten. But I am going to disagree with you Gabby on one point: Peter Bogdanovich said he should have offered Snider money. I think this would have worked. Snider was all about himself and frankly didn’t give a damn about Stratten except as a ticket to wealth and fame, a ticket that never paid off. Bogdanovich would not have offered Snider a trivial sum, but the kind of money that would have set Snider up for a long time, allowing him to pursue women and fame elsewhere. I don’t know for sure, but my guess is Snider would have taken the money and left her alone, perhaps with a bruised ego, but also with lots of money to go build up his ego elsewhere. Something to think about. Stratten had a bright future, but one self-absorbed, self-obsessed bozo took that away from her. Paul Snider was about as worthless as they come.

The exploitation of grown women is nowhere near as outrageous as the sexual exploitation currently happening in the US as acceptable. I appreciate the severity of the where the exploitation of Dorothy got her, but we need to keep Playboy in perspective

The human brain is still developing at her age. Nobody should expect someone so young to “have it all figured out”. Especially when they are surrounded by so many older people in powerful positions influencing and taking advantage of her.

I remember the case but I remember the movie Star 80 even more clearly because, when I think of the case, in my mind, I see the actors Mariel Hemingway and Eric Roberts.

Another excellent video. I really love when you give your opinions and thoughts. And you're right that we're all human and all naive in some way.

My daughter was 2 yrs old at the time .
She was a beautiful girl mixed up with the wrong guy .
And as usual nothing good came from it.
    She needed protection .
Back then not much was done to stop this kind of stuff .
Your never safe with a control freak !!

Dear Ms. O'Rourke, I currently spend my nights sleeping within a cemetery. Some say writhing, in irregular movements. Others suggest, at times, I leave. Nevertheless, after having decided upon final friendships and Their Notvce of What Fors and Nots, a solemn and belated mongrown branching vehicle of some satiety, now expresses an innate and ontologically composed dry venting thirst for piss.

Hearing about all these predators, blaming the other predators, reminds me of the Spider-Man meme. 😒😒😒 all creeps pointing fingers at the other creeps for being creeps.

Such a good point about Dorothy being naive because she was so young! She seemed so beautiful inside and out.

I think the whole thing was a set up. He had the money and power to get what hewantedandhewas able to cover up. For her husband who supposedly killed himself,.however, when his body was found, the gun was positioned under him. When you fall after a self inflicked wound, you don't fall on top of the gun. It falls away from you. Someone murdered them both.

Say what you will about Playboy and Hugh Hefner, I was honestly surprised that he referred her to that accountant which enabled her to take control of her own finances.

Yes I think they all took advantage of her, its sad she didnt have someone in her life to teach her to look out for these types of people. I feel like her mom did at first until she became famous. This is so sad, i own the movie Star 80 and have watched Death of a Centerfold, and i feel they all should be ashamed of themselves of how they used, abused and groomed her. Rip 😢
