@@Therealhousewifeofreno My mom died from cancer when I was just graduating undergrad (she got to see me graduate.) Though that is many, many years ago now, I still miss her everyday, and I’m so glad for all of the things of hers that I still have. She had “doctor handwriting” because she was one, and I’d tease her about it, but when I see it on Christmas Cookie recipe cards, or I find letters she wrote to me when I was away at college, it’s beautiful because it is a part of her left for us. You can just sense her through the handwriting and the words. And it’s beautiful. I, too, miss her every day.
You about got the waterworks going for me, too. My mom had notoriously ‘challenging’ to read handwriting, but stumbling upon it in her old Joy of Cooking, in a box of unorganized photos, books she gifted me…it is something I treasure. It is HER. She is there. So, yes. Your handwriting is a part of your spirit, your personality, your unique self. I never liked my American standard handwriting taught in elementary school, and when I was an exchange student in France, I discovered two things…a completely different style of cursive (google French cursive alphabet) and that they commonly use grid paper. Loved them both. So, I morphed my handwriting into French cursive, and worked on it to make it something I actually like and was something ‘artistic’ I was actually good at. Then, I also got a ton of nerve damage from a sudden illness a few years ago, and literally had to learn how to hand write again. I don’t have nearly the amount of control that I used to (but it’s a lot better) and my hand tires and, like yours just goes blaaahhherrrr after a while. I love to see different handwriting, but I’m not a fan of the super popular ‘brush calligraphy’. But, I’ve always loved different fonts (first computer was Apple.) I got a few books from the library and one in particular has a ton of alphabets that I like, and it shows you how to write them. That is helpful for me to have a reference. Also utilizing white space on the page, breaking it up with color/stickers so it isn’t just a page of writing can look more interesting with just regular handwriting. My pen recommendations: Energel Clena 0.4 dries nearly instantly and you can write a Mildliner over it without smear on TRP (I don’t have any Tombows…now.) I have Uni Signo’s in 1.0 Metallics (with black and white) and they are inky and smear like crazy, but if you’re careful the color is rich and deep (and that white covers little errors so well!!) I like Faber-Castell for the Micron (the Micron barrel cuts into my fingers…I hold with a death grip and press hard, also they run dry really fast for me.) Pentel Sign Brush Pens are nice…I have them in the ‘antique/autumn’ colors. I also prefer a needle tip on pens, it helps me to control what I’m doing better that the conical tip (like on a Sarasa.) Anyway, practice is important, just trying and experimenting is fine. Maybe your handwriting looks great in a thicker tip? Mine looks terrible in a thicker tip and much better in a 0.5 or below. It also looks better with a fine liner (probably cause they naturally slow you down) and gel pens vs the dreaded ball point (eww), roller ball or fountain pen. So, trying different pens may make a difference, too! P.S., Kelly, you’re so lucky to have those journals of your Grandmother! And, I had that exact Mead notebook for my journal in 9th grade, and it’s filled with pictures from magazines of my favorite soap opera people, along with 14 y.o. drahma and bad emo poetry 🤣 🤣 I still have it, and while it’s a little embarrassing, it’s also kind of sweet to look back on when I stumble on it. Maybe someday, it’ll be someone else’s fond memory of me. (I love that your Mom and sister sign for the dogs…I do that on Christmas cards 🤣…your Mom’s handwriting is beautiful!!!) Great idea to save cards and things (my Dad who lives 10 min from me mails me comics or other little things he finds, perfect way to save them!) Thanks for a great episode! I have liked how your journals look…interesting to the eye without that Amanda Rach Lee total perfection (which would be cool, but she’s a professional artist) and yours looks like YOU.
I love this. I also use a lot of those supplies/pens sometimes. I like the Uni Pin fine liners as well. There are soooooo many options out there. Thank you for weighing in on what some of your favorites are. That will surely be helpful to other people watching.
Thank you so much, Kelly! Our electricity went out for almost 3 hours just as I noticed you’d posted this!! UGH!!! Off to bed as it’s almost midnight!! Playing tomorrow!!! So excited!!!!
"Have fun...outside of telling people to F off..." - this is pretty much my approach to most things in life. ;) Thanks for the handwriting tips, esp the outlining, love it! I have some of my granny's and great aunt's old journals too, and yes, the tears do come when I see what the weather was or what they had for dinner or which highway they took to go camping written in their own handwriting...it's lovely to have those mementos, and I know future generations will love the journals from all of the ones being written today. :)
Thank you, that was very informative (and entertaining!). I do the x height thing, but didn’t even know I was doing it 😂. You’re right about the handwriting, I have a card my mother wrote, she died over 30 years ago, so I don’t have any videos or her and won’t ever hear her speaking again, so treasure that card from her.
@@sallycourt5919 You’re welcome. I’m glad you have some of her handwriting. I often wish I had kept a voicemail or something from my dad, so I make sure to always keep some of my mom’s. At least there are photos.
My mother also died 30 years ago, and there are a few VCR recordings of her that my brother has. But, when I was 5, we went on a long trip to Europe. My Dad and I came home (planned) after two weeks, and my Mom and older brother stayed for another four weeks. She knew I’d have a rough time without her there, and so she left me a letter to open every single day she was gone in her briefcase all lined up in envelopes. She’d also put little yo-yo’s and stickers, etc in them. I’d run to that every morning to see what she had left for me. Most importantly, she recorded two audio cassettes, one of her singing songs to me like “Hush Little Baby,” “Wild Rover,” and “Jamaica Town” (that one kills me) the kind of things she’d sing for me going to bed when I was little. She also left a Bingo set and “plays” Bingo with me, calling out the numbers. She talks to me, asks me questions about what I’m doing, how many days til she comes home (there was a marked calendar I could cross off the days) and I could talk back to her like how Mr Rogers asks kids questions on his show. I still have them, and while they are getting scratchy (I recorded them onto my phone and saved into the cloud) they are an absolute treasure to have. I don’t listen to them very often because it’s just too emotional, but they’re there when I need them. You can hear her in your heart, but I know it’s not the same. I’m glad you have what you do have. Losing a Mom relatively young is tough, I get it.
Loved this…I’ve been trying to do lil things like this in my weeklies…especially the Tombow/outline block letters…Im not artistic but I love my tombows and wanted to use them more…than you for the inspo on different things to try 🫶
Fun stuff! YES - I have cards and letters hand written by my Grandma and I will cherish them till I pass! I wrote note cards about my kids (for each of them) when they were babies and gave them to them as a gift. I also have a fun letter hand written by my Uncle to my Mom when he was on a cross country road trip and he even mentions Me and my Grandma! ❣💕💗💌
I loved this video! I have zero game in the writing department but I am strangely okay with it? 😂 I do need some Tom the Bows, I have not put forth the money to get them but they are next on the list, at least before 2025! I didnt know you were left handed! Lefties are so cool! 😎 I wish I was a leftie! My late father was a leftie and I do a whole lot of things with my left hand but not writing. My mother went to visit my brother and I have had the house to myself so Party? Ummmm, no, I slept 3 hours and woke up to get my SI order placed, it was a bleery eyed situation but I was successful I think and then passed out. Not from a party or anything but from ordering planners?! 😒 Yup, just here living the life! 😂 Thank you for this video! I also now need tiny stickers but which ones? 🤔 💕
@@terrilabeth hahaha. I got up at about 6:30 in a fog. Sat on the couch listening to an audiobook and about an hour later was like “Oh. I was supposed to order PaperTess at 5 and Sterling Ink at 7. Oh well.” I very briefly spaced it. 🤷🏼♀️
I too feel the same way about handwriting. Like why bother having a planner if you're just going to use script stickers unless you're going to throw them away. Those coming after us are going to want to see YOUR handwriting. I have a coworker who's said when you're gone...can i have one of your journals.
