    The nozzle models are made of Card stock slight hot glue, and masking tape.
    Please tell me if it helped you, Comment rate sub!!! Thanks for your time!

    very good explanation, and so surprised it worked in miniature 👍I used to see RF-4Cs at Kadena in the 1980s, and when they were coming in on approach at part-throttle, those J79-GE-15s would make such a racket just like your ducts, good job!

      I should really think about making a newer video of this. These days with 3d printing, people could make them for RC F-104's. Though not really sure what kind of losses would be had.
      Thanks for your comment!

    That;s pretty cool. It even sounds just likea J79 when the fan is powered off and running down.
    But, dude, you need a camera operator so you can demonstrate without trying to hold the camera.
    We've got a 95% built up J79 in the shop right now, and we'll be testing it in the near future. ( weeks - months? not sure yet) You should come see it run.How far are you from Fort St John?

      Right, I got dizzy watching it in the berginning.
      Most people doing new model kit reviews put their cameras on tripods and hold the kit parts and instructions in front of the camera after taking it out of the box without touching the camera again... It can be done if you're by yourself but you need a tripod.

    WOW !!!! This is totally awesome. My dad flew f-104's before transitioning to f-4's for the air force. Your explanation was far better than his. But he explained in in far greater detail and I was only 8 years old at the time.

    Great explanation on this! And the whole time I thought it had something to do with the intake side of the engine. So thanks for clearing that up for me! Learn something new everyday!
    And a very good demonstration using the fan, it really did sound like a J-79 with the second nozzle you made.

    Pretty cool! I'm surprised that the fact that the inner flow isn't faster doesn't make a difference...I mean, obviously the venturi speeds it up a bit, but not to anything like the jet velocity of a J-79. I'm pretty sure you're right that the out air flow is mostly for cooling, but it may add some thrust as well...you get cooler, denser air from the outside mixed with the hot exhaust, which would heat it up and cause a bit of expansion. Probably not much, but some.

    Many years ago I was near a military base where there were F4’s and I would hear that howl as they were taxiing around the base so I asked a guy a few days later what that was? I was traveling by this air base and not being from that area and not knowing anyone that worked on the inside, the guy thought I was hearing things that weren’t there but I knew I was hearing a definite howl, and now I’m finally satisfied with a answer. Thank you and good job.

    The early J79-15s had a shorter nozzle, this was used on early F-4s and F-104s. The howl was precisely between 82-85%. When in Korea I was on the later F-4 (E) with the J79-17. More power, longer nozzle and no howl. During ground engine runs it was forbidden to stay in the 82-85% area due to the noise, especially when we would run them at night. Our squadron's F-4s would not howl.
    Interestingly enough, modern engines would howl, but have a "screech ring" installed to eliminate howling.

    Good Vid! I know its been awhile, but you could put the blower in another room and tape a vacuum hose to it, then just have an electrical plug in the room you are in and bring the free end of the vacuum hose and plug in the room you are filming in to do the experiment again. Then we would hear better the howl of the beast!

    That opening that sucks in air is buried in the cover panels around the engine , pulls heated air out of the engine compartment , there are vents toward the intake , i don't think the Engineers at the time didn't realized the sound it would make , but i'm sure they had a party after !

    This is an awesome vid. How did you get the dimensions right on the nozzles? I’m trying to cad one of these howling nozzles right now and 3D print them. I’ve printed two versions but haven’t gotten them to work yet. Did you just tinker around for a while or were there some dimensions you followed? Thanks for the vid!

    • @Helicopterpilot16
      @Helicopterpilot16  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It amazes me that I actually got this to work. I just used my intuition for the size if you believe that. The biggest factor in the whistle I believe is the smaller exhaust port on the internal tube, not the main nozzle which is bigger.
      I'd have messed around with this much more but niches be niches.

    You can make them out of cans with the same dimension at the front and use a aerosol can to add fuel then light it on fire together with the fan

  • @ThePaulv12
    @ThePaulv12 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I note this arrangement is similar to how water is admitted to a boiler.
    I thought the howl was likely a resonance of the the mainshaft in the engine, perhaps induced by a LP stage compressor assembly causing a slight pulse of the air in that fan section and radiating into the shaft.
    I concede you may be onto it however.
    Nicely done!

  • @Helicopterpilot16
    @Helicopterpilot16  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @sanfranciscobay I'd say the times you would hear it is During taxi acceleration, and crusing flight below 15,000 feet, and during landing. and speed is not a factor it all depends on the pilot throttle use.
    I had a feeling it would work because I already knew where the howl came from.
    And the last questions answer, An F-104 no but a J-79 from an F-104 yes.
    I'd just need to get very special permission to work on a museums old J-79 because the nozzle's are wide open. But its a maybe.

    I'm sorry but I've seen another expert explanation although I can't remember where..
    The howling sound of my all-time favorite jet ever is not produced at the exhaust but at the air intakes and the way it is shaped with the intake cone.
    I'm by no means an aviation engineer or expert just mentioning what I saw and read elsewhere.
    Point in case, if it was the nozzle of the J-79 then why doesn't a Phantom howl that has two of those engines installed? It should howl twice as loud if it was the engine exhaust and it doesn't howl at all, it only spits out as much black smoke as the Starfighter. Therefoer I believe it's the intake.

    • @macdonaldjohnstonfan
      @macdonaldjohnstonfan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      EagleOneM I believe from what I heard from AgentJayZ it is caused by the exhaust nozzle, in particular it’s the J79’s with short exhaust nozzles that howled, early F4’s had short exhaust nozzles like the F104’s which howled.

    You've identified where and why the howl comes from. So when is the plane in 80% throttle, how frequently, at what point in flight, speed, altitude...?
    Did you know your experiment would work prior to building it?
    I know it's a long shot, but is there any chance you can get next to an F104 at 80% throttle and then explain it with a video camera and a pointer?

    The "howl" was put in synthetically by GE to warn amateur pilots of the impending doom they face if they decide to strap themselves to the J-79 without having the ability to control all that power. Okay clearly not :) but I like to think of it like that. Many pilots died in the F-104 simply because it was not a forgiving aircraft. If you look at the accidents involving F-104s, a large chunk of them happened on landing. Still, easily one of my fav. military jets. The J-79 is scary :)

  • @Helicopterpilot16
    @Helicopterpilot16  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @SgtRum It may take me a bit, but I think I have a better setup than the blower I used before. I have a hairdryer motor (Ducted Fan) connected to a model train transformer. Therefore it is adjustable to a point. Its allot quieter than the blower. But I sure will do so. Thanks for watching! I will message you once it has been uploaded.

      The Vulcan howl is resonance in the intake and not at the nozzle. Same resonance for the same reasons (suction), but in different locations.

    The J79 nozzle structure and testing can be seen over here. (th-cam.com/video/jcRnoVftNdA/w-d-xo.html) It will be easier to understand the structure mentioned in this vid, but there is no howling sound appears during the test.

    • @Helicopterpilot16
      @Helicopterpilot16  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I made this video I knew and watched his videos. The reason for the lack of howl in that variant of the J-79 was because it was designed for the F-4. They designed it to not howl. The J-79 used in the 104 was very rudimentary. He has videos as old as mine in 144p of an old starfighter engine test that does include the howl.
