  • Creating organic and smooth curves through traditional modeling methods can be quite challenging. To solve this, we can use some very simple vex in creative ways to model organic curves in Houdini 19.

Thanks for this! It's a great technique for spawning new ideas on how to set things up!

If In the case of bending a line but the base line is in animation and got rotated randomly in 3 axes then offsetting in 1 axis won't hold it properly I think.
What are you gonna do in that case?

It would not work in that case. My approach would probably be to store the rotation value and reapply it after getting the line oriented correctly and displaced how I wanted or to simply apply the transform animation after modeling the line to the shape I want

Nice but honestly, it's way faster/easier to do that in more classic way/software (Maya, Max, Blender, Modo etc.). Houdini is just not a great tool for organic modeling... Thanks for the video.

I would disagree but to each their own. It is good to know how to do things in multiple software as well so you don't have to leave it if you don't want to.

@@InsideTheMindSpace Yeah but still IMO depends on the work. For quick kitbashing, organic character modeling Hoduini is just not a great tool. It can be done - yes, but there are other "simpler" solutions and I think it's good to know other software so you can combine them in your pipeline and enjoy the benefits of each of their strengths. I love Houdini, but organic/classic poly modeling isn't its strength.

I'm not disagreeing that traditional modeling isn't its strong suit but each software has its benefits. I enjoy the semiprocedural benefits of traditional modeling inside Houdini
