I remember first watching this in '07 thinking wow he's fucking awesome! Watching this video is like finding a long lost friend! Nice job, even after all these years! I was quite young then, 23 now 15 then!
That was honestly the best cover of All Shall Perish. And i'm without doubt their biggest fan and that is as close as anybody is gonna get to their drummer, Matt K. Awesome vid. Keep postin.
Good to see a fellow drummer not afraid to mix cymbal manufacturers. I have mostly Paiste, but I also have Meinl and Wuhan, and I keep getting people saying 'different manufacturers don't sound right together' but it's just not true. Great drumming, nice and tight. Keep playing! 5*
It is. It's a 16" crash (I had an 18" that I cracked when I moved!). I love that cymbal. It's got a nice edge, without being harsh. It sounds great on recording, which most cymbals don't. If you can get your hands on one, you'll love it. Very durable, too (assuming you don't leave it in your car in 5 degree weather and then play a show while the cymbal has ice on it!)
holy shit...that was pretty fucking perfect man. I think your video should be an example to everyone doing covers because you have the song so low in teh background but just enough to know you were doing absolutely amazing!
Well for double bass, it definitely helps to have a pedal you can customize to your liking. I originally had a DW 5002 dual chain double pedal and I just couldn't get a feel for it and there were NO ways at all to change things around! So I returned that pedal after a few months and got my Iron Cobra Power glide pedal, and it's been history ever since.
so freaking awesome. unknowledgeable people i know always say metal is noise, but i find it the most technical genre of music next to classical, and you played it near perfectly. (i only refrain from saying perfect because then you would have no reason to practice xD) also, i love the grace notes you add in the drum part past 2:00, whenever i hear this now i think of those notes haha.
I'm using an Iron Cobra Power glide double pedal and currently I have a 22" Remo Pinstripe head on there, though I'll be switching to a Powerstroke III once this one decides to break. The snare, believe it or not, is only a 12"x3" Hand Hammered Tama Steel Snare. I have a Remo Coated Emperor on there now with the batter head tuned pretty low and the resonant side tuned pretty high
Oh definitely. I used to play with all Remo tom heads, but I tried to Coated ones on my kit and everything just sounds so much more warm and delicious.
If I had to pick a particular technique it would probably be a combination / hybrid of the typical heel-up and the bostic flat foot technique. It's more of what is more comfortable and appropriate for the situation. I hope that kinda answers your question?
It's a 12x 3 hand hammered steel snare from tama. I bought it on ebay a couple years as a side snare and I liked it so much that I replaced my main snare with it
I have thought about it and even tried to start one up at belmont, but everything fell through so that's when I decided to join up with all the guys in Ex Nihilo
I use the Iron Cobra Power Glide double pedal. Hmm, on a scale of 1 -10 for spring tensions, I'd have to say probably around an 8.5. They're cranked up pretty high, but there's still more room if I wanted to tighten them down some more.
I definitely play with my stool up higher than normal. According to proper drumming "etiquette" you're supposed to have your stool high enough so that your legs are paraller with the ground. I find playing with a higher stool is much more comfortable and it makes it so that I don't have to stomp my feet when I play double bass
If you have the ability to do this, try moving your beaters a bit closer to the head while still keeping them fully extended. This will help because your stokes wont have to be as long in order for them to reach the beater head, and with the beaters fully extended (maybe even put some counter weights on them?) you'll be able to build up your power as well.
I posted a comment a few months back and this video still blows me away. Finally got some double bass pedals, just need some cymbals and i'll be good, and this will be the first thing from ASP that i'll perfect.
It's a 12"x3" Tama hand hammered steel snare drum. I love it so much. I'm able to tune it exactly the way I want and it doesn't get in the way of my legs!
Thanks for the comment! My drumset is a 1st generation Tama Rockstar kit from the late 90s. I believe Tama discontinued the rockstar model a few years after I got my kit.
It really comes down to practicing mad crazy as much as you can. Find some songs with fairly simple double bass parts that you really like and play along with those until your feet are perfectly even, and then move up to harder songs.
I don't use a bottom microphone on the snare. I like eliminating as much possible phase problems by using a minimum amount of microphones. I actually don't use an SM57 on snare, but rather an Audix i5. It has a much smoother frequency response, and a warmer low end. Great on electric guitars, by the way
ahh cheers dude. i don't think i should practice too much though until i get my new double pedal. only because i'm worried i won't be able to use the same technique on it
Best thing I ever did to help my double bass (besides practicing every day) was to switch from my DW pedal to the Iron Cobra power glide I've got now. My playing has gotten exponentially better since then. Best thing I've EVER done for my drumming
for how long have you been playing man? ive been playing for maybe 2 years, and i can play this (without any accuracy and timing). youre doing it perfectly!!!! ispiration indeed!
jesus fucking christ how can you do the double bass that good. i cant get past lamb of god standard of fastness, or however you want to say it. damn your good
My china is a 12" Wuhan Lion china that you can pick up from any drum shop or even guitar center for 10 - 15 bucks. The kick sample I used is one that I found on the Drumagog forums. It's an Andy Sneap gog file. I think if you search around on those forums you should be able to find it.

its just the double bass is what makes it insane.

Dude.. awesome drumming, there's no question about that..
But is that a spongebob blanket in the background?? Epic :D
awesome snare sound dude!!! and and awesome kicks!!
@eyerecorddrums Dude, you're probably one of the most dexterous amateur drummers I've seen, playing open handed and closed handed. Awesome work man.

Mad recording champ, youre great the old drums.
Sharp man. You made it look so irritatingly easy...you've definitely got the chops!

@eyerecorddrums Dude, you're probably one of the most dexterous amateur drummers I've seen. Awesome work man.

Oh definitely. I used to play with all Remo tom heads, but I tried to Coated ones on my kit and everything just sounds so much more warm and delicious.
Nice tight cover! :D
and i love the ambidexterity on the splash xD
Hey dude... excellent cover.. !! 10 for that!!
I like how you mixed the snare. sounds nice.
im from salem..you grew up like next door to me! really good drumming kudos, i wish you could of taught me.
thats good.. still need a work here and there, but compared to the others, this is the best.. nice work man!
If I had to pick a particular technique it would probably be a combination / hybrid of the typical heel-up and the bostic flat foot technique. It's more of what is more comfortable and appropriate for the situation. I hope that kinda answers your question?
dude that was fucking epic you probably are the only one on youtube who nailed this song on the drums
I had a Zildjian A Custom splash but I cracked it and haven't used it since.
Those are some smooth singles on the bass
It's a 12x 3 hand hammered steel snare from tama. I bought it on ebay a couple years as a side snare and I liked it so much that I replaced my main snare with it
very nice cover dude!

I have thought about it and even tried to start one up at belmont, but everything fell through so that's when I decided to join up with all the guys in Ex Nihilo
dude, you are amazing, i'm really impressed!!!!
dude he makes it seem like he made this shitt up all hail this dude for being a god of drums
I use adobe audition 3.0 as my DAW and I use the Waves Diamond Bundle plugins a lot
I use the Iron Cobra Power Glide double pedal. Hmm, on a scale of 1 -10 for spring tensions, I'd have to say probably around an 8.5. They're cranked up pretty high, but there's still more room if I wanted to tighten them down some more.

Dude, you're a machine. No doubt about it
Sweet I love me some drum corp action. Thanks for the props, especially coming from another drummer!
Dude! That was sick!
yes! So far you are the only one who's been able to spot that. High five for you
Thanks a lot. I used to suck at tuning them but I sat down one day for a couple of hours and forced myself to get better.
I posted a comment a few months back and this video still blows me away. Finally got some double bass pedals, just need some cymbals and i'll be good, and this will be the first thing from ASP that i'll perfect.
Really greta dude! Keep it on, it will go far..

@woodj071394 It's a flat-footed heel-up style. Helps me to play more relaxed
ahh cheers dude.
i don't think i should practice too much though until i get my new double pedal.
only because i'm worried i won't be able to use the same technique on it

@Hassenix1 It's a Remo Coated Ambassador, which is pretty much the best snare head ever haha
Best thing I ever did to help my double bass (besides practicing every day) was to switch from my DW pedal to the Iron Cobra power glide I've got now. My playing has gotten exponentially better since then. Best thing I've EVER done for my drumming
