I think what Joe is missing (and Bill isn't explaining well) is that Facebook paces the posts you want to see at a certain interval that will leave you longing for more and therefore keep you on the app longer. It isn't that they're flooding you with things you like to keep you there, it's being randomized and distributed to you at determined intervals to keep you dissatisfied, but knowing that you could see the kind of content you want the next scroll down the timeline. The other issue is that if your social media feed is in chronological order you have a logical start and end point. If you refresh your feed you might get a few new posts. However when your feed is given to you through a back end algorithm every time you refresh your feed you get a brand new stream of posts that can be mins, hours or days old. So Joe, there are multiple principles involved here. There is something called a Variable schedule rewards ratio. Basically if your dopamine is delivered inconsistently and in uncertain amounts you are MORE addicted and the addiction lasts longer. This is why gambling is so addictive and why lootboxes are a concern in video game as it's horribly psychologically manipulative. Then when you throw in the social element getting less likes makes you less certain and you seek out ENGAGEMENT and validation more to make up for having less likes. So people are more depressed, but they also chase that bait even harder to try to not be depressed. It's like a drug dealer with control of how often you get the drugs and choosing to deliver it in the way that will keep you the most addicted for the longest. It's horrid.
I use social media. But not for the same reasons a lot of people use it for. I use it to stay up to date on certain stuff, like computer components, gaming, space stuff and whatnot. Sometimes, I do comment on social media, but not for validity - because I don't see the appeal of validity. It's just in my nature not to see any importance of that. I just am unable to. My comfort zone is actually my job, going outside looking around at tech stores and gaming. I love my job, I enjoy it as best as I can, and well... it keeps me happy. Life is more than just social media. It's way, way more than social media. The fake validity people get goes away too shortly. Sure, dopamine is addicting. But it's one hell of a natural drug.
When you view social media as a tool to speak at every one it’s a problem. 7,000,000,000 can’t speak @ 7,000,000,000 @ the same time. The laws of physics says that two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time. This also applies to communication online.
I think it's unhealthy that people post stuff just for likes, and that it effects their moods. What a bunch of losers. If you could just turn that little thumbs-up blue, that would really make my entire day.

I deleted my Facebook after noticing a pattern of my newsfeed being full of "outrage" posts - things in the news that would disgust or anger me, and that my emotional outbursts (I have a condition similar to BPD) were getting worse. I would turn to Facebook to vent (and hence be seen by close family and friends who I would cause unjustified worry and concern in). It is against my personal code of conduct to do such things, but it was becoming more frequent. Since deleting Facebook, I feel better than I did (although the battle is far from being won).
Good post and can greatly relate. Lots on my newsfeed just angered me and urged me to comment back to throw logic in the eyeballs of the readers, but soon realized that I was acting out of emotion, rather than logic. Taking a break from FB really helps to detox the mind and emotion.

I think that the off putting feeling I’m getting from this guy is his sense of entitlement. We are entitled to stop using their app or website, and they are entitled to run their business as they see fit, but neither party gets to break the law or force the other to do anything. Doesn’t that make sense? He says “there needs to be a consent based system.” Your consent is your decision to use the app in the first place.
The thing is that most people don't know or realize that social media can be addicting/impactful to the psyche. Social media companies have studied its effect on the brain and design their apps to be more addictive to users. It is more than just a yes/no decision to use the app when people see the app as such an important connection to those in their lives

Dopamine pleasure, we have pleasure at the palms of our hands and to consistently feed this pleasure would mean you won't be able to last long without pleasure before the feeling the need to stimulate yourself. I believe constant stimulation from phones will make you more of an entitled person who freaks out when things don't go your way, because you're brain is so used to the rhythm of constant dopamine hits that stress occurs when there's no potential dopamine pleasure in sight, dopamine is very addictive after all. Also, the three major feel-good chemicals can be stimulated with use of cell phones, which is why a lot of people's reality IS social media.
People no longer live in the moment and attention spans are going extinct. Why did James Bond stop Max Zorin in A View to A Kill. Their high paying jobs are also destroying neighborhoods. ty
Limiting an accounts social reach is probably equal parts Facebook trying to entice users to pay for advertising as well as to entice a higher volume of posts the account makes... While the first one is pretty self explanatory the latter is probably in an attempt to harvest more user data as users may post more to make up for the drop in engagement or "Likes".

I completely agree, I just uploaded a 1 minute poem about the realities of Social Media and I'm curious to see what you think about it because it hits on this same topic just in a very short form
Delete or shrink your media use. It can be argued that your smartphone is killing you slowly. With no or less media exposure, you will have no choice but to work on your social life in the real world on a day-to-day basis. Do yourself a favour. You don’t need to be living the illusion of a digital identity.
I'll tell ya what, as a NYS LMSW (currently working on my clinical) and L-CASAC, I've rechanneled my focus from the Drug & Alcohol field to internet addiction. The DSM-5s newest additions mostly pertain to this relitivly new societal phenominon. Both the Japanese and Chinese government's have already begun funding clinical inpatient and outpatient treatment centers for adolescents suffering from disorders directly affiliated w internet addiction (e.g., depression- and anxiety-related symptoms being found most commonly). And make no mistake, soon, the West will be plagued by this catastrophe. Suicide, MAT programs and anti-internet movements (i.e., a Luddite-oriented opposition) are coming. This is going to become so much worse than most people are anticipating. Our youth are in big trouble! And that's not a speculative statement shrouded in reckless assumption. The research is rather conclusive and if policies and regulations are not implimented at schools and in the home, it's going to get ugly: we're on the precipice of a nasty epidemic.
Yes, it's already ugly unfortunately, and is going to get much worse. Depression and suicide coincide with internet addiction and it's especially endemic on children, so sad. I think that is a great choice to focus the phenomenon of internet addiction. The coming generations are really in for a jacked up, psychological ride thanks to the internet.
@@TheJDeuce Yeah, it sucks, because there's a lot of good that comes from the internet as well. It would be interesting to conduct a longitudinal study on inmates who are carrying out long sentences in the prison industrial complex (they have zero access to the internet) and use a comparative sample of free citizens, who regularly use social media networks. It would be a great cross sectional study. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches would garner some really useful data. I'd bet mood disorders would be more prevalennt among the free citizens haha. That's some ironic shit, but I bet the data would suggest that.
Man seeing someone glued to their screen ignoring you talking is like seeing somone under a very nasty spell. Like brainwashed and they need help asap!! Oooh man what a sick world
Patrick Oneal This is not going to last that long as years to come. Mind control for letting the brain to get these fake information and images that has nothing to do with your true emotions, thoughts and feelings. Any of these types of negative feedback from trolls (young people) or paedophiles (young people) who upload videos that are trying to mind control you is absolutely ridiculous and it is plain childish behavior that it is sad that they don't have any home or foster home training to teach about respect.
Facebook does this because of money. The content you post doesn't matter. Once you build up a decent following, your posts get limited (also by what you post personally) This is how they get you to pay for exposure via advertising which really just gives you fake bot likes and shows your posts more to people who already like your page
There was a questiin Joe asked about how it builds revenue by fb not letting your followers see your stuff. They create the algorythms which makes you pay for an ad to get more views on content. You get the free 5%...but if you pay you get 10% lol
5:13 it makes sense if you consider that if people are liked less, they'll attempt to 'try harder' to accrue more likes to stem the flow of being ignored. It's like a hot chick who suddenly finds that no one likes her, she runs out and odes something drastic to gain attention.
I was going to say the same thing. This guy should've referenced that podcast if he knew about it. This shit is common sense. There is a reason that the CEOs/creators of these social media platforms don't let their kids use them.
In the next few months I will be conducting a study to see the effects of looking at images in media, particularly thin attractive models, on people’s immediate biases. This study can be used for a strong argument against chronic social media and pornography usage. When I conduct this study I will need more male participants. If anyone would like to contribute to this research and be a participant or learn more about it reply to this comment, it would be extremely helpful.
I talked to my friend about buying this boxing thing and like a day or so later I started seeing ads on my Instagram over that exact thing I was talking about buying. They’re fucking spying on us dude
Consider a drug addict: they have to do more and more to get the same high. Social media is the same way. They start screwing with the algorithm causing your hits/likes to go down... what do you have to do? Spend more time on the site to get your likes back up. It forces you to have to engage more on the site in order to achieve the same numbers.
Yes, face book/Instagram only shows you to 5% of your actual follows. It is for revenue purposes, he failed to mention that’s why there is a feature you can pay for that will promote your account so that more of your followers can see your posts.
Personally I have a Facebook account for two main reasons. The first is messenger so I can speak to people. Whatsapp seemed like a good alternative but it's now owned by the same company so it makes no difference. And on the other hand I'm in several groups and Facebook is the a good way to communicate and organize event. It was good for doing just that 3 or 4 years ago but now it's a mess. For example we organize motorcycle ride and the number of people who show up varies greatly. Why? Because sometimes a lot of people get notified and other times then don't. Earlier this months we were 15 and the next one we were 3, for no other reason that our fellow riders didn't get notified. It got to a point where a google sheet is way more effective to reach people who want to be involved. We might be a minority who use social medias to actually meet each other but it has become pretty useless in that regard. Back to the old method when we had a fixed place and hour every sunday to gather. At least a calendar is reliable.
This dude sucks at describing this issue...it is a very really issue. 1) By limiting the amount of interactions you receive then limit the amount of dopamine impulses we get...which by the way getting a like on social media has the same type of brain response as taking drugs....2) FB and Insta have in the past and most likely still in the future target your profile through algos to show you either more depressing or angry content first vs happy uplifting content to study the results of what that person will do over long periods of time. It is pretty fucked up.
This is nothing new. People in this country are thought of as consumers. That's all. Companies have been advertising for decades. The whole time they've tried to convince you that you NEED their products. The only thing that's changed is technology. Before they would have to advertise to the masses but now they can individualize the way they do it because of smartphones and computers. Based on your pattern of shopping they know what you are likely to buy in the future and try to get you to buy their particular product.
Is it just me picking up on how Joe is starting to shift his view points more to the big tech company’s ideology. It’s like he almost excepts all the excuses and reasonings behind there actions.

Lmao u thought
I ain't gonna do it ya little tit.
B8ed me good
Jo Po.... do you have dreams about making JRE comments?
Be honest how many times have you came back and checked this comment to see how many likes?
Joe "I heard MI6 invented social media" Rogan
Im only 21, usually quite sociable so just a regular bloke. I quit facebook/instagram/snapchat and i tell you hes not lying, you will feel happier separating yourself from social media i promise you
I deleted my Facebook after noticing a pattern of my newsfeed being full of "outrage" posts - things in the news that would disgust or anger me, and that my emotional outbursts (I have a condition similar to BPD) were getting worse. I would turn to Facebook to vent (and hence be seen by close family and friends who I would cause unjustified worry and concern in). It is against my personal code of conduct to do such things, but it was becoming more frequent. Since deleting Facebook, I feel better than I did (although the battle is far from being won).
Exactly.....
Good post and can greatly relate. Lots on my newsfeed just angered me and urged me to comment back to throw logic in the eyeballs of the readers, but soon realized that I was acting out of emotion, rather than logic. Taking a break from FB really helps to detox the mind and emotion.
Same, I deleted my FB account ages ago, never felt better, never used it much but the content was just rubbish, and people just posting stuff for likes and be noticed. I just didn't get it. Best thing I've done, never looked back.
It's still up on the sight, it's a stat, you count as a active user, that's money. You'll be back and have to make another account and that's even more stats and more money.
@@TheJDeuce Exactly, FB wants people reactions, they want people to post, post a topic or comment, then you get like 5 million different view and arguments, this generates traffic, social media like traffic, the more the better for them. People have to stop feeding the trolls that Social media is, but it's too late, the tend is full steam a head. I dare someone to pull the plug on the internet, earth will be a much better place to be. I look outside my house, down the street, it's empty, back in the old days it was full of people just enjoying life. Now every is in from of the PC, or you go out, everyone is looking down on their phone, it's sad really.
I recently just deleted all my social media and I had like 15k followers mostly from having been an athlete... I can tell you that I feel so much better without all that bullshit. I figured it was never affecting me because I wasn’t addicted.... yet I feel different without it. I can only imagine how much better some ppl would feel without it that currently live on that thing 24/7.
Findaway Towin if you go without something for a week and you crave it, it means youre addicted
I’ve watched your video with Elon Musk and now this video. Your videos are educational and philosophical, it’s definitely impacted my views and made me make better life decisions.
That's the future, that's why we can't rely on social networking sites. You should have your own network. Plus new generation has been program with this process as being normal
Going outside to talk to people is a pretty solid network.
Next thing your going to tell me is that in the future is that the presidential candidate will be picked randomly on social media and that person picked will have zero knowledge on politics.
@@loganstolberg2743 we witness that in 2016! Lol
He's not a very likeable dude although I agree with a lot of his points. He seems to have a strange personality, similar to the social justice warriors entitled, won't acknowledge when he doesn't understand something etc. At least he's working towards a good aim unlike the normal SJW but I wouldn't like to have a beer with him.. Maybe its just me.
@@playdoughfunrs Thats the thing, at least with alcohol and tobacco there are actual warnings on those. There are NO warnings on social media that tells users "our app my cause addiction and depression, anxiety" maybe soon there will be before creating an account
The Interviewed Guy seems like he's reaching however agree that anti social media is an absolute disaster. Humanity has gone loopy. Happy to not partake in it. Phew.
Agreed, he does pinpoint quite accurately how the feeds have changed to keep people dissatisfied yet passively wanting more imo
I spend so much time on yt that I have no more time for any other social media. It's kinda sickening. I'm actally kinda addicted... Should do something. Just turn it off maybe.
karl jonson same and my friend spend 9hrs a day on youtube insane
Same i spend a chunk of time on yt super huge watchlater then i realize and disconnect for like weeks and come back...... Though i learn a lot from yt.... Idk if its bad or not but too much of anything is bad
It’s actually because they want everyone to pay for post promotion. So they are transitioning to only getting the word out if you pay for it. It all comes down to money.
I honestly love this and I think it sheds so much light on the topic! I uploaded a 1 minute poem about the Realities of Social Media and I'm super curious to see what anyone thinks about it!
Only 5-10% of my 62k followers even see my posts. Business accounts are throttled. They expect us to buy ad space. We only are business accounts so we can see stats and use story links. IG is money hungry.
what did you expect?
facts bro but keep doing you👌🏽
Dopamine pleasure, we have pleasure at the palms of our hands and to consistently feed this pleasure would mean you won't be able to last long without pleasure before the feeling the need to stimulate yourself.
Their high paying jobs are also destroying neighborhoods. ty
Seems Joe is trying to disagree with him. Then Bill responds and is CORRECT. Then Joe says "yup youre right."
He's talking about global thinking, the sum total of your thoughts. It's always worse when the put out a good imagine. Influenced by 'feeds', what a life. Creativity can be a bigger drawn out process, these types look like they battle with the drawn out process of creativity, and the immediacy of what they have to explain. Man needs 2 brains. The future of creativity is 'trending'.
He is right, no...it is not by likes it is advertising.....I cancelled my Facebook.
Joe 'that's right, I remember that now" Rogan
@@TheJDeuce
Yeah, it sucks, because there's a lot of good that comes from the internet as well.
@@matthewhorizon6050 interesting and yes, that would be a great source to analyze from!

Social,,media is another way of,controlling peoples thoughts and the direction of their attention
Everything comes down to Algorithms, allot of them can be somewhat figured out. Just need the time and pay attention to them.
used it freshman year of highschool in 2011. Never looked back. On all platforms except YT.
Facebook does this because of money. The content you post doesn't matter. Once you build up a decent following, your posts get limited (also by what you post personally) This is how they get you to pay for exposure via advertising which really just gives you fake bot likes and shows your posts more to people who already like your page
Tesla played a market stunt saying they give away the patents, they newer did.
Bill “that’s a good point” Ottman
It's not forceful let's be real honest here. We always blame the company when the consumer is who has the most power.
Joe "I'm really not paying that much attention... but I believe you" Rogan.
they take away chronological so you can PURCHASE the "promote" your post feature.
People are weak. I don’t feel bad for a vast majority. Have a beautiful day.
Did joe completely forget his 2.5 hour conversation with Dr. John Haidt? LOL
I was going to say the same thing. This guy should've referenced that podcast if he knew about it. This shit is common sense. There is a reason that the CEOs/creators of these social media platforms don't let their kids use them.
You're going to hear people talking about algorithms like Kanye was talking about opioids on TMZ
Open source is great but in some instances like for cars and personal data, it would be a horrible idea and extremely dangerous.
Truth most of em. Esp when u try to press back any social media it scrolls to top. Hmm
Can u really deactivate facebook.😱
Consider a drug addict: they have to do more and more to get the same high. Social media is the same way. They start screwing with the algorithm causing your hits/likes to go down... what do you have to do? Spend more time on the site to get your likes back up. It forces you to have to engage more on the site in order to achieve the same numbers.
Humanity wants it .... but the greed overlords dictate to you how the world is!
If there was a Social Media boycott, people won't use facebook, then people wouldn't want to develop social media
Toe looks so funny when he tries to think.
Never seen Joe seemingly so damn tired
This dude sucks at describing this issue...it is a very really issue. 1) By limiting the amount of interactions you receive then limit the amount of dopamine impulses we get...which by the way getting a like on social media has the same type of brain response as taking drugs....2) FB and Insta have in the past and most likely still in the future target your profile through algos to show you either more depressing or angry content first vs happy uplifting content to study the results of what that person will do over long periods of time. It is pretty fucked up.
I thought Instagram does this because you will pay for promotion
Joe rogan is amazing
If you don’t like it then don’t use it
Quit all social media
This is nothing new. People in this country are thought of as consumers. That's all. Companies have been advertising for decades. The whole time they've tried to convince you that you NEED their products. The only thing that's changed is technology. Before they would have to advertise to the masses but now they can individualize the way they do it because of smartphones and computers. Based on your pattern of shopping they know what you are likely to buy in the future and try to get you to buy their particular product.
I havent been on instagram for over a year now and feel so much better. Also starting to think I left Matrix and Im on the other side.
Does anyone have a link to the the Facebook study Bill is talking about they don't mind sharing?
Is it just me picking up on how Joe is starting to shift his view points more to the big tech company’s ideology. It’s like he almost excepts all the excuses and reasonings behind there actions.
Ohhh minds... Only interaction with someone over email said that I couldn't log into my account because I might not be myself. It was like talking to a crazy person.
Learning about the psychological effects of social media while I'm watching it on social media. Lol
Not sure if it's just me, but TH-cam doesnt even suggest 'videos like this' my suggestions is usually just a list of stuff I've already seen OR closely dated videos from the channel. Not very good, personally I like a little bit of random, but TH-cam just shows me more videos on my homepage only of videos or channels im familiar with already
People get depressed or kids... anyone (like myself) who is familiar with research will be annoyed with how foggy some of these ideas are stated.
But guys! How can you hate on social media! JUST THINK ABOUT HOW EASY IT'S MADE INFIDELITY!!!!! It's amazing!!!! Best invention of the 21st century!!!! (thick sarcasm)
social media doesn't HAVE to be something you care about. it's just a collection of websites for fucks sake.
I feel like the way Joe was talking to Bill was really condescending. I feel Bill handled it well though.
First thing I thought of was why is he getting so much more in depth with Minds rather than Twitter??? 🤔
Steem blockchain has a host of decentralized social media platforms.
Steemit is the biggest, you can earn from posting and upcoming and the community monitors everything
Dtube is a decentralized TH-cam, yes you earn, you earn on all of this
Partiko is the steem version of Instagram... again, you earn!
Actifit is even live on Fitbit if I’m not mistaken, an app where you earn more with more daily activity (steps)
As Eddie Bravo would say “Look into it” steem blockchain is a beast, and undervalued
Joes been popping those Addy's again
incorporate the option to disable likes
Seriously there's times where I do really think Joe is super two-faced
TheDarcodraco he’s a narcissist
Unpopular opinion: Cyber Bullying isn’t real (Truly doesn’t make sense to me on how people can let someone on the internet to bully you, considering it’s just words to begin with. People are too god damn soft these days)
Your opinion won’t hold in court sadly. Now there are new cyber laws that can prosecute anyone who has committed a cyber bully offence..
Facebook isn't like that anymore! Shut isn't in chronological order.
