CRKT made a turtle folder a while back that this reminds me of. It was also small, non-threatening and based on a cute animal. Of course, the CRKT was a lot more affordable.
My wife got me one as a wedding gift. Beautiful knife, all of the parts were flawless with one exception. It did not lockup. Found that out and that the blade cuts super well. Luckily not to much damage to my index finger and spyderco did offer to fix it. After being bit by it once I couldn't bring myself to keep it and sent it back. One of the nicer looking blades I have gotten my hands on.
I recently picked up the CQI (constant quality improvement) Para 3 for 2021 and it has S45VN. It's not a sprint run, they're updating all production Para 3's to S45VN.
Mine is a nice conversation piece, It stands up when open on my work desk. fine as a utility knife around the work site. Opens parcels and letters well.
Is there a channel that do sharpnes test with one of those wire thingies pressed onto a scale? Always wondered why pocket knife ytbers never do this. It'd be cool to see which company comes with the most sharp blade by default.
Good review Nick. Appreciate the candor on what is a cutesy knife at $190 range. I like the Zero Tolerance 0022 better in this diminutive size, more practical, less cutesy. But I haven't been moved to spend on the 0022 yet.
From what I understand, In Japan the “dog” style...more specifically the way it stands up without the blade touching a surface....i thought it was more exclusive to kitchen cutlery where that would make sense naturally (keeping it clean while cooking) but I don’t know how it translates to an EDC, but the standing without the blade contacting anything is a thing!
Does it do the other standard Spyderco opening trick? Where you pinch the blade/hole and flick the handle downwards? Kind of a doggie dropping? I'll see myself out.

Honestly if they made a knife any smaller than this I'm not sure they'd be able to fit all their branding on it. Trademark Spyderco Hole symbol, Trademark Spyderco spider symbol, Spyderco name engraving, factory location, makers marks, and steel markings.
Could be useful in settings where people might be alarmed by "normal" looking knives with a lock. Also, I'm not sure if I'd see it as a flipper. Some jursidictions frown upon flippers. But then it might be just the fanboi in me talking..

Spyderco used S45VN on a ParaMilitary 2 sprint run (I got one in summer 2020).
A bit more corrosion resistant than S35VN, if memory serves me right.
