Somewhat timely review for me, since I just ordered the "birds eye maple" chaparral. A newer take on the basic platform, with a different "classy" aesthetic. But, anyway, it's good to know that the basic platform is still GOOD! Wonder though if it will require yet another review from Nick? Other previews seem to indicate that the maple may be thicker, (and probably heavier). Hope that doesn't screw up a good thing?
I haven't bought a new knife in about a year and a half and with all this Spyderco talk I decided to look at what Spyderco presently has in their lineup . I saw the Parata. I always wanted one but every time I looked they weren't in stock. They were in stock today so I ordered it. I have no idea what I'll use it for and it will probably be the most impractical knife I ever purchased but it does look cool. Cool is important.
Really have three great options with this, the raffir, and the maple. Also I believe this is one of the thinnest blades on a current spyderco, which is why it's a total laser.
Just went again to spyderco in Golden, CO. Nice experience, friendly, knowledgeable staff. I instantly wanted the Sun/moon knife. Being an Occultist this unique little blade will nicely into my collection. Thanks for making the video. Your reviews and name (Nick) came up in conversation 😊
"I Have the Moon" by Magnetic Fields is a good theme song for this knife when you're unboxing it. "We have walked in ancient times/And we've been burned for many crimes/We have ended many lives/But we never really died/You have the sun, I have the moon....."
I love this knife when I got it but I just wish they had done something other than the red g10. Maybe a pearlescent acrylic or something. To my mind the dark side is beautiful, and the light side just seems like an afterthought.
Nice review, you really sold it for me. I have one of these in my wish list on DLT and thanks to your review (on both the original and this version) I’m ordering it today.
The chaparral is one of the best things Spyderco has done in recent years. Anything about the delica you could possibly complain about is addressed with the chappy. I suppose you COULD complain about the lock bar but I don’t use it as a flicky, fidgety knife…it’s a tool. So that doesn’t bother me at all.
The first pictures of the prototype of this knife got me into knife collecting. I liked the knife so much that I tried to find where I could order one online. Ended up buying a wharnie Delica since the Sun and Moon wouldn’t be available for some time. When the Sun and Moon finally became available for purchase, it ended up being the 36th knife in my collection. 😅
@@jojojaykay The release was about 6 months ago, but it has been a while since they first presented the Sun and Moon design. If I recall correctly, it was first shown either late 2018 or early 2019.
I got one of these a few months back (thanks Zach), and I have to say it is my daily work carry. I need something smaller (i.e. non-threatening) and this fits the bill perfectly. I have had a slight issue with the thinness once when I was breaking down a ton of cardboard - XL hands get tired of that thin shape after a few hundred feet. Other than that, great work knife.
I think I'd personally like it more if they utilized polished Micarta for the scales. I don't believe they've used that much in a long time, but hell, the original Calypso used it.
You're the KING, but...can you get a Para 3 for your size comparisons, I think everyone but you already has one ;) I bussbalz lol, you are definitely our Knife King, I have learned so much from you, thank you Nick! Rich
The Spyderco Chaparral is a GEM in every sense. It's a design classic with superb fit and finishing. I have the carbon fiber and the frn. I like the aesthetics of the frn in form and function. It's EDC perfection in so many ways. It's unlikely that I'll be buying the Sun and Moon but I appreciate its originality and execution. I complain about the pricing of so many Spyderco knives but I give them a pass on the Chaparral Frn. This new "gourmet" edition seems relatively well priced and that is definitely a good thing.
Nicolás...got my Chaparral LT on your recommendation and it's my table blade. That Sun&Moon is gorgeous and a bit thicker. Missed it. Hope you are doing well. Still workings on the magazine, it's driving me nuts😱🤣✌️
Idk how you balance tastefully classy with cringy puns... ehh its a thing. But I love it. I love what ya do and I always look forward to hearing your opinion on knives that i can actually afford. (Lions are going to the superbowl in 2022!)
This reminds me that I struggle to tell most of Spyderco's patterns apart. I love the knives I have (Native, Para, UKPK and a few others) but there aren't many I really want as they're just so similar. I wish I liked this more. "big plus"?!? What would a Shabazz review be without groaning whilst watching ;)
I have the Birdseye Maple (the best), Raffir Noble (close 2nd) and just got the Sun/Moon. The Sun/Moon is much thinner then my other two. The scales are about the same but the whole metal lock mechanism is at least twice as thick on Birdseye Maple and Raffir Noble making the grip much better. No idea why they made it so thin and it’s on the slippery side. It’s a great looking knife but not a gem.
The scales are so dang slick that I almost dropped it the moment I picked it up at my local knife store. If you got oily hands like me, this knife is IMO unusable.
@@HellGatefr2 nope, peel ply. it's a few layers of cf over g10. either way with the industry full of shred cf, marbled cf, camocarbon, fat carbon, who cares if peel ply is real or not.
Sometime when I’m looking for this knife I can’t find it because I’m looking for the wrong color. Yeah I am old so you mustn’t make fun of me. If you live, you will get old too. 😁
I wish they'd do this design on one of their full sized knives. Maybe the Manix. Oh an while I'm at the wishing well, I wish they'd make an XL Chaparral with the exact same blade stock thickness. And if they did that, with the sun and moon motif, then you can actually disregard my first wish lol.🤞🤞🤞🙏🙏🙏
I got this months ago and I like it but I think the design could've been better, more distinct. Both sides of the handle are nice but at a distance it kinda just looks like two colored dots on G10. The sun could've been a nicer material to match the MOP moon instead of just plastic.
Wish spyderco would send Keithkevinken a knife, for all his 7+years of spyderco advertising. How he's owned more spyderco knives than anyone else online, and made video's on them! Also paid for every single knife himself. I wrote spyderco several times, in several ways. But no response at all. Not suprised, sadly!
Lol at the Instagram likes joke. Except you’re forgetting it doesn’t have a lanyard hole so they can’t tie beads to it when they perch it on a log or rock for their glamour shots.
Boring. How could you possibly screw up a circular inlay, are you crazy? You whine and complain about Civivi knives being similar, but act like this scale change on an an astoundingly boring Spyderco is something incredibly special.
How exactly do you think inlays are done? Must be nothing to it, you know, inlaying and polishing multiple materials including natural and thus variable Mother of Pearl to tight tolerances on a production scale of hundreds of knives. Gotta appreciate things done well in my opinion. Civivi does mostly stick to the same materials shaped to a bunch of foreign designs (less so recently but still). The entire point of the Chaparral is to use many variable handle materials and finishes, so if you’re wondering why Nick would praise the Sun and Moon there’s the answer. A number of levels of quality in finishes, choice of material, weight, thickness, aesthetics etc.
Civivi offers a staggering variety. Of liner lock flippers. In D2. That's super exciting and different. Not boring at all. Spyderco offers a staggering variety of different steel, locks, deployment methods, scale materials. Knives built for specific purposes. Knives built to comply with silly local knife laws. Knives built in Japan, Taiwan, the US, Italy and China. Thick knives, thin knives,, tiny knives, big knives and everything in between. Yup, totally boring.
I love how the mother of pearl actually looks like the moon. Totally awesome. I’m getting one!
Nice, but too much plastic around.
looks like a japanese flag, yellow would make more sense
“As someone who flexes professionally on social media...” I come for the puns, and stay for the ice cold self-awareness 🤣
This.
"They were going to do one of Switzerland but that would be a big plus." Freak'n hilarious!
Love my sun & moon, fit and finish is spectacular as well on mine

The Sun and Moon version doesn't interest me that much, but OH BOY the birds eye maple version is calling to me something fierce.
The show side reminds me of a Moki knife (made in Japan) with the MOP inlay.
It might be made by Moki.
Nick sends us to the lightweight review for a full rundown...
And this review is actually longer.

The two sides having different classy looks definitely makes it unique. Since it has a back lock it should do well carried without a clip.

According to BladeHQ, the scales are a little thicker than the FRN version, which gives it possibly better ergos

Nick’s going above and beyond with this one. 🤣
Why is the sun red? The sun is yellow. Is this based on a particularily smoggy day in LA?
There is of course a Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan and is of great beauty
I picked the raffit Nobel because somehow it was 35$ cheaper and the scales are beautiful
