    Ingenious! I'm not going to lie, the instant I saw that you were going to cannibalize a cast iron topped table saw, I got a bit grumpy but you've won me over with your ingenuity and the willingness to use all of the parts and not just scavenge the top.

    You could make a rotary tilting welding positioner with that mechanism maybe.
    Also, you could drill some 5/8 (or whatever) to that center section to utilize yer standard fixture table clamps. Difficult to place them accurately for layout, but you'd at least have places to put the clamps.
    tip: annular cutters usually do a great job of making accurate holes if you have access. If you use twist drills, best to drill undersize and ream to final dimension.

I have a Jet cabinet saw so the Craftsman really just collects dust and whatever other bits and pieces I set on top of it. It might have to migrate to a new life as a welding table.

    Tubes are usually warped in one direction, but often not warped at the sides 90 degrees to the first surfaces. So check first. All rod and tubes have a straightness spec. If you’re buying ing some, try to find out what it is. For example, McMastercarr always gives that spec. Home centers may not. These things are much cheaper than a good 4 foot level, and if you get a good one, put aside and label it.

    I think you should put it back together and change the pulley to slow down the blade and create more torque. A metal cutting blade and you have a accurate, compound metal cutting table saw. It would be a beast on square or rectangular tube. You also can se the angle on the blade a 5 degrees ( or play with it to see what works best) so you don’t have to grind open the edges for a better contact.

    Leave the motor in it and put a car Brandon wheel on it instead of the wood blade and you have a useful tool for metal work

    hmmm, $30? I guess we aren't including the materials? I was wondering how you'd secure a top alone, for less than $30 in materials by itself. Thanks for the vid, wish I had a free tablesaw top laying around here.

    Another idea: 1 inch thick particle board with sheet metal on top. Not very clampable and can burn if your weld is too hot, but has done the job for me for many years.

    Could have left the saw as it was and put a sanding disk on it for grinding and the fence could be used for welding setups as well

    Cool idea, I’m going to try this. I’m new to welding and have been looking for ideas of a mobile work area that won’t break the bank. Belt sander idea is cool too. Looking forward to the next video.

    Love this idea. I've been looking at the pro ones and they start around $1000. I just love to tinker and will be doing things around the homestead. Also being a knife maker, the idea of making a belt grinder is appealing so I am going to start keeping my eyes open for a old table saw.
    Ideas for improvements: Use wing nuts on your stops for ease of use and maybe epoxy the bolt on the inside so it's 'captive'. Add a set of wheels on one end and either removable legs or have them shaped like "H" and have them fold toward each other but one nest inside the other and be able to use the wheels to cart it like a wheelbarrow. That would allow you to roll it around alone and probably get the non-wheeled end up onto the tailgate to then pull it into the bed of a pickup.

    Awesome repurpose. People sometimes do not know what they throw away or get rid off. The older equipment is much better then newer ones, more solid. I've come across a lot of good stuff I have repurposed in so many ways, so this video is right up my alley. But this is an awesome way to make a welding table. I just started welding and came across this video. You grabbed my attention by the build under $30 title, I thought you were going to use some thick ply and cover it with a sheet metal, even doing that can be expensive when you purchase raw materials.

    • @francoisbouvier7861
      @francoisbouvier7861 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure if the old stuff is necessarily better. I'll definitely vouch that it's heavier. Usually a plus. Found my last cast top saw at the garbage transfer station. That'll make four as now, highest $= $30. Router table, designated tenon cutter for log rails/furniture.

  • @keithlane4343
    @keithlane4343 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great idea. Especially knowing that table is 100 pounds of ground cast iron to start with.
    Sander project sounds great too, but how about if you crank the blade down below the deck surface, and keep it as a table saw too.
    Although removing the saw parts would eliminate a lot of weight, especially if you were going to move it around a lot for mobile use.
    Another good video.
    I first found your channel when you got your Langmire CNC plasma cutter.
    How is that machine working over time? Would you still recommend buying the Langmire Crossfire PRO ?

    Dude! Freakin Genius! Subbed. Definitely wanna see a sander build. BTW, I have that exact table saw from 1990 that I still use! 3rd motor (went to 3 amp 220v), new steel adjustment wheels, put both wings on one side and installed a cast iron router extension table on the other and rigged up a better dust collection.

    12 inch disk sander with little table is going to be more useful for chamfers. I would keep the blade, remove teeth, stick 12" sanding discs, run a dimmer switch to control motor rpm.

    • @tubeonline629
      @tubeonline629 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would be hard to find a dimmer switch that would be rated for the amps that the 1 hp mother will pull. Alot of electric motors will burn up if you run them on low voltage.

    • @danielarney9729
      @danielarney9729 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tubeonline629 not to much resistance on motor if your just disk sanding, and if your worried you can change pulley, but some nice variable speed controllers are available cheap, or take one off a router that is going to be used for an additional flat surface.
