    I always thinking of Timpani and drums players in general in any orchestra as unknown soldiers without them the whole symphony will be incomplete

    Dear Craig...I am, INDEED, one of your neighbors...I had absolutely NO idea how great you sound on your instrument of choice, the timpani, until I removed my "industrial strength" EARPLUGS! I especially, absolutely love the emphatic, definitive, no-holds-barred G timpano roll you deliver at the end of "Were diu werlt alla min"!...the best I've ever heard...period...now I know who the chorus is "Heiling" at the end!

    Dear Craig,
    The great thing about Orff was that he was a percussionist, composer, accoustician, and manufacturer of percussion instruments. When I studied timpani with Richard Hochrainer in Vienna in the early 1970's, his mallets etc. were the only ones available with any real quality (times were obviously very different during those years).

    Love that timpani loud!! Great intonation and way to make the low drum speak with the choir and the brass. Would love to hear the 3rd percussion part come out. Those four stroke ruffs sound amazing when made audible and of course the right timing. And i would put more of a flam in those large cymbal crashes in the beginning. But... Fire the first trumpet. I had to stop listening not long after O Fortuna. Hit the note and get off it. We toured with this opera in college. Our symphony winds did a

    There 2 timpani parts are only in a couple of the movements. The way we handled it, the second player just comes over and shares the same drums. If you watch all the posted video (parts one and two) you will see where a second player comes over.

    Hi, I love this performance of Carmina Burina! The timpani is one of my favourite instruments and I like how the camera stays on the timpani the whole time. Do you have any more videos from this performance? Particularly the section containing Veni, Veni, Venias?

    I had heard this piece with others of its kind and actually purchased some that were of the same intensity. I think some were "Gods of War". Another work I enjoyed was the music for the Trinity Project the Atomic Bomb Movie. It is always a treat to see music you enjoy performed well. This was wonderful. I wish I could have seen the entire choir and orchestra. It was too bad that it wasn't a higher quality video. Still it is EXTREMELY enjoyable.

    @guitarharvey Those are little mutes. I don't want the timpani to ring too much in that section. It gives me a more articulate sound. They are called Moon Gels.

    The percussion part may be purchased separately. The timpani and percussion are all on the same part. The music is still copyrighted so I cannot give the part out. I bought my own personal part on eBay. You might try there yourself. Good luck...

    I'm sorry for my ignorance, but how are the timpani tuned? Based on notes?

    • @ctzerbe1
      @ctzerbe1  9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Julio Cesar De Carli Timpani are the only tuned drums in the percussion section. The composer indicates the notes to be played on the bass staff, just like they would for a tuba or a double bass etc. Modern timpani have a pedal that allows the player to tighten or loosen the head which changes the pitch of the drum. In the very beginning, in order to get more power, I tune both of the middle drums same note and strike both drums at the same time.
