@@HowToTrainADreamDog I'm very pro crate but didn't realize how much I should be doing it when I'm here. I'm starting today with my 10 week old puppy who i've had for not quite 5 days beyond when I run an errand, night time and showers. we played outside and pottied and now she's whining in her crate but is starting to calm so hopefully helpful for when I leave to go outside the house.

For the last month or so I now use a pen during the day for when I am out or he just wants to go in it to nap. My question, which you answered, was how long I could leave him in the pen now when I am out. Thanks!

As I've seen other videos on this, but I like your straight forward way of explaining. We just got a 4 month old chocolate lab, and fortunately I'm able to work from home sometimes, so I'm trying to crate train her while working from home. I'm glad you mentioned not putting bedding or anything in there. We had a big blanket, but I removed it as she was chewing on it.

Really needed to watch this. I'm away from home 6-7 hours a day but I'm lucky that I still live with my folks who telework right now. Would you recommend having them let out to pee and play and go right back to the crate? Or would you suggest that letting them in a play pen a bit before going back to the crate? I mentioned puppy gate and I got hit with such resistance from my folks that I'll depend on heavily until I can properly train and bring them out in public for service training

Hi, great videos. So glad I found you!! Currently crate training our 9-week-old puppy. Question though, is crate time during the day the same thing as nap time? So for example if we just did a 20-minute crate time session where I worked with her the barking and whining, only going in when she's calm etc and I let her out. Now that she's out she wants to take a nap. Should I put her back in the crate?

He's in the cage for 10 hours on average but he's done so well and seems ok. i watch him on a camera to see how he's doing. So rest assured that it might work for your pup to do the same.

@@Rambunctious-Dinosaur He doesn't get potty breaks. he's in his crate with some toys and a little bit of food but no water. That's for like 10 hours. he hasn't Peed in his crate yet. I know he's holding it so that's probably not really optimal for his health to be holding it so long but I am just kind of keeping an eye on that aspect. but other than the potty breaks I just followed the advice on this video and it's working out great!

Yeah, 10 hrs of anyone person( human or animal) holding in fluids is not good. Even though the puppy is not drinking water your body is still making fluids and filtering fluids in your body to be expelled. That means a lot of built-up toxins in the body. Your puppy may get frequent Urinary tract infections or kidney problems.

We keep our puppy in the crate during the day when it is not play time or potty time. Great suggestion on using the board on top of the crate to prevent the sheet from hanging to close to the crate.

long ago before I was a trainer I had a super-naughty Lab that ate everything under the sun. Worked like a charm.

Even when working from home I can`t imagine my life without crates. And they are a must-have to take with you when you are traveling with the dog. Otherwise, we would pay double or triple the price of staying in the hotel 😜 We usually use the pieces of crates just to build the wall and mark his territory of movement.

All of your videos have been so helpful to me in the last week of getting my puppy. I've been so stressed that I've been doing everything wrong, so hearing your advice and affirmations of things I've been trying to do is so nice and helpful.
I had wanted to ask if you had advice about if there's an appropriate time to check on a puppy if they're doing more than just whining, like howling or shrieking. I worry he's panicking or it'll cause him to become more anxious.
His crate is in the living room since we spend lots of time there. We tried having him in the bedroom but knowing we were close by and he couldn't be with us made it worse. Should I just ignore him and let him tucker himself out at night even when he sounds like he's being possessed?

I work from home and keep my puppy crate between his breaks and potty and clear out a couple chunks of time for play and walk. He does very well when I bring the crate to my office and I'm slowly acclimating him to crating in another room. He already can go all night with no crying or accidents. I'm so proud of him!

I was super worried i had messed up because he slept in bed for the first week because I was just so tired and he was crying a lot losing his littler mates but i popped him in after watching some of your videos and it took a couple nights of him crying every few hours but he's bounced back and sleeps even better in there. He seems a lot more rested and less grumpy(he's a beagle and very much hates waking up) in the mornings too! a huge plus.

Using your sample puppy schedule, during "crate time", is the puppy supposed to be in the crate entire time (i.e. 1pm-3pm)? or is it just however long he wants to be in there as I know you state that we want him to love the crate...

I will be picking up a 9 week old rednose pitbull soon so what about using a towel for some comfort in his kennel . I will be using a dog kennel ( like for on planes ) that is full sized but has half of it blocked off should be just enough to allow him to turn around ( but can be adjusted ) and will just be used for sleeping in my room ( his castle ) later on . He will be in a playpen setup in the house when not feeding , training , playing or letting out for potty and I have a baby gate to put him in the kitchen when I need to clean up in the playpen . Any other suggestions ?

Hi Michelle, thanks a lot for the information. Really helpful. It seems that the rule is: when you are not at home or you are not interacting with the puppy, it should be in its crate. Is this correct? At what age can dogs walk freely in a confined area of the house? Or should a dog ALWAYS be crated when there is no interaction? This seems a bit harsh.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Puppies should be in a crate when you are not home so your puppy doesn't chew or destroy something in your absence. Pups can play in in a puppy pen or a gated room that has been puppy proofed or stay tethered to you when you are home. Interaction is crucial so that you can build a strong bond together. Playtime and training time together is a must!

It's best to keep all bedding and soft things out of the crate for safety. You can make sure that the temperature of the room is comfortable for them, and the crate cover also keeps in their body heat!

I see a lot of information about crating. However, we have put our name down on a waiting list for 2021 to get a puppy. The breeder has asked that we NEVER crate or use a playpen on the puppy. Luckily this is achievable in our house as we can block off safe areas in our house while we are at work and our house is fully tile. But I would be interested in your thoughts.

I am fostering a new puppy, I am crate training him when I am at home but I feel really uneasy leaving him in the crate for 8 hours straight. I am still potty training him...so I am leaving the crate open, I leave toys around, water and I he has a bed and he has the garage to himself now. He is learning to hold his pee until I come home and he's learning to poop outside, he has had accidents inside but I can't expect him to not, he's just 4 months old.

I remember about 12 years ago there was a crate called the “potty training puppy apartment.” It used a bed on one side and a puppy pad on the other side. A lot of people liked the crate for potty training.
But why do you say dogs shouldn’t use the bathroom in their crate?

He would be home by himself for about 6 hours a day, except weekends. My mom gets home before I do and she thinks that he should be fine without anyone coming here. I really dont want him to get anxiety for being at home for a long time.

We will be getting our 7 week Boykin Spaniel next Saturday. We have an older Boykin (10 y.o) at home. We have a crate but I have a bed in it. I will definitely get the "cushion-bed" out tomorrow. She will be at home with Peedee (our 10 y.o.) Boykin, while she is in the crate. I would love a video or advice about how to feed the dogs, when they have the same schedule: 1 in the am and 1 in the evening. Where do I place their bowls.... water.. etc..

Congrats! These are great questions. When bringing a new puppy or dog into a home with other dogs, there will definitely be a period of adjustment. It will be important to allow each dog to have their own space at the beginning, and perhaps for all time. This will depend on the personalities of the dogs.

You’ll be able to ask unlimited questions or share videos of behaviors that you find puzzling or training that could use some fine tuning.
