    Idea for next project. Make a mold for a snare shell, then melt down aluminum cans to make an aluminum snare. Could be cool.

      That is actually a really sweet looking snare. I like my snares shorter (in height).
      Wish I could have bought a whole drumset from you but I *just* bought a Yamaha Stage Custom (birch 22") and tuning it is driving me nuts (it's my first drumset, though I've been drumming since I was 3, and I have NO idea what to do ._.). I guess I'll build my own at some point, always wanted to make cymbals anyway :D
      Also here's a little idea I had. What if you had non-cylinder shells? Maybe if you had shells with spikes on the inside you could do a lot of funky things with resonance as more of the low tones will be captured by the shell. Maybe it brings out the lower end? Maybe add some holes (like ocarinas) that, when air flows through them, they create a whistle type of thing?
      Just wanted to know if anyone tried or thought about any of these. Haven't copyrighted these yet so make them while you still can, or just copyright them yourselves that's fine too. I'll go cry in a corner now.

    I love the metallic hollow sound you get when the snare is full-on - at the highest tension. That sound I find rare and brings a wonderful dynamic to simple drum patterns/expression. Great build, congratulations.

    David it looks like you have a nice shop set-up now. And congrats on the drill press. I highly recommend old Delta, Rockwell, and my personal favorite Walker Turner. Since you are on the east coast they are more plentiful there, especially upper east coast but they come up cheap on Craigslist from time to time. I have a full shop of the them now..all from 1940 to 1960.

    I've been meaning to say this for a while, and maybe you already know about this...but Tru Oil made by Birchwood Casey is amazing. It's Tung OIl but it has some other additives that allow it to cure out more like a synthetic finish. It can be applied in many coats and lightly sanded in between. After a final cure and polish it is a really nice natural finish. I've used it on guitar necks a few times.

    THAT is the stave build. Less mass on the shell allows lower tuning, if desired. This idea originated with Chris Brady’s baritone snare drums. Rhett Hendrix took it further with his archetype series, which have the thick rings and scooped out interiors yours have.

  • @wep5906
    @wep5906 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have one similar. 6x5x14, 5/16 thick but no re rings. ash and walnut. I used Danish oil to finish to keep it more natural. Try that next time. Great job and it sounds great!
