I've watched loads of stave drum making videos with a view to eventually making one myself. I've found yours to be by far the most inspiring as you have the same amount of equipment as previous experience as me and you're getting great results. I'm about to get round to making the jigs including the table saw sled. Could you possibly do a video at some point about making the jigs? Also, is there any part of your jigs that you would like to do differently? Thank you! I'm looking forward to the next video.
Dirk, thank you! Your are too kind! To answer your questions: (1) Yes, I will make a video about the jigs; (2) yes, there are things I will do differently. I've gotta ferret away about forty bucks materials (plus $15 or so for a new band saw blade), and then I'm going to rebuild the outside and inside milling jigs. I will do step-by-step videos of the builds. (I don't know how to make plans, or I'd do that, too.) In the meantime, I'll throw together a quick video on what the jigs consist of, their crucial parts, their strengths and weaknesses. Cheers!

Nice job! Hopefully the glue in those checks will hold up! You need to sharpen or replace your router bits after about 3 or 4 shells or they start to burn the wood instead of cut it! I'd recommend setting up your router table to cut the bearing edges, rather than running a hand held router around the top of the shell. Router table is much safer!
Hey! So great to see you here! :) In response to your comment, since this video, I've built a router table just for doing drums, and now always gut the bearing edges with the router mounted under the table. You're right: it works a lot better. My experience, too, has been that you need to change bits that frequently. This particular wood though just ate through the bit. The new one I bought mid-way through the cutting of the outside was almost entirely shot after milling the inside. The wood was tough on the blades.

The pronunciation was on my mind since watching your video, and pushed me to look into it as I was told to pronounce it mo vin gooey.

At 1.43 min of the video you clamp the drum using hose clamps and blocks of wood what are the purpose of the blocks of wood??
It's been so long that I had to re-watch. I bought the wrong size hose clamps (too long), so I needed to blocks for spacers.
i love the oil and wax finish, man. real step up from the typical polyurethane coating!!!! make me one and send it to hong kong, how much????

Hi Joseph, love all your videos, have inspired me greatly. Just a quick question, do you find that the threaded bar you use for milling the outside bends at all in the middle? Or have you found some sort of incredibly stiff metal. I've resorted to moving the router as I couldn't find anything stiff enough... Keep up the amazing work! N
Hey, Nik -- For the most part, the 1/2" threaded rod I use is fine. The problem with the Movingui drum, I think, was combination of the vertical supports being too far apart and the router blade being really dull. You can buy much heavier gauge threaded rod. I'm hoping to build better jigs--maybe this summer--and plan to use 1" rod, which I've been able to find online without a problem.

10" deep is nice! Would you say that deeper shells are harder to make? Like during glue up or anything? I ask because I'd like to try making a full kit eventually. I never made even a single shell but it's still something I'd like to attempt.
I didn't have any problems gluing up the deeper shell. It was no more difficult to build than the shallower drums. There's a chance I will be doing a large full kit later this year. If the order falls through, I still intend to do a full kit for myself. Stay tuned!

It all depends, man. The angle changes depending ONLY on the number of pieces. The size of the pieces depends on the diameter of the snare combined with the number of pieces. Here's a great website: uniontownlabs.org/tools/stave/
I use 20, 2.24" wide staves cut at 9 degree angles.
How much do you charge for a snare? Do you build complete drums sets too?

Not for a long time. Moved into an old historical house. Too many home projects to work on.
When you rout the outside, how are you attaching the shell to the jig?
It's about as slipshod as it gets: the shell is sandwiched between to pieces of particle board lined with 80-grit sandpaper and bolted on tight to the all threat. The only finicky bit is getting the shell properly centered around the steel rod. Once you're there, and it's locked in place (I put nuts and washers on both sides of each piece of board), you're good to go.
How do you know when it's properly centered? Thanks.
Ideally, I should be using end panels that are full round, which would make centering much easier. Right now, I just measure measure measure to make sure it's as accurate as possible. Ultimately, perfect centering doesn't matter. There's enough thickness in the unrounded shell (each stave), that by the time you cut the middle down to your final thickness, there's no issue--it sort of self centers as you go.

How critical is it to get the width of the staves dead on? Looking at the calculator, the stave widths can be odd numbers (e.g., 2.81" or 3.84"). Does it really matter if you have it exactly correct as long as you get the angles cut correctly?

Again, just oil (in this case, teak oil) and finishing or "paste" wax (just a standard wood/furniture polishing wax).

I use oil and finishing wax. I like to keep it simple, so that the drum doesn't have a big build-up on it. I want it to still look and sound like wood, not plastic or glass. (Sorry, my Spanish is pretty weak.)

It depends on the number of staves. :) 360 degrees divided by the number of staves divided by 2.

It's called movingui and comes from Africa. I believe it's also called Ayan or Satinwood.

Hey, Ben, thanks for the comment! I really think I should get a good dust extractor, too! But between student loans, diapers, and school supplies, my once-a-week workshop times comes dead last! I'll get there eventually. In the meantime, cheap masks, open doors, and lots of sweeping. :)
