Thanks for pointing those moments out! Keith Jarrett would have stormed out rather than incorporate it into his improv. (Keith if you’re reading this I love you and I take back what I said)
I'm prety sure he actually introduces it into his arrangement right after it happened! You can hear the trill just about a beat after the phone ends, and the violinist behind him smiles because of his response.
It's wonderful that his music and cadenzas are not for the purpose of showing off his skills, but simply for the enjoyment of the listener. I would also like to give my deepest praise to the maestro and the orchestra for their sensational performance. Bravo!!!!!
I've heard many fine and great pianists over the years, but Sumino stands as one I've never heard before. He somehow mixes spontaneous improvisation seamlessly, without missing a beat, back to the main flow of the score. Pure gold ! And you can see he was caught up completely in the sheer fun and joy of playing Gershwin !
6:36 Melodica appears 8:38 Melodica leaves Mr. Sumino and all the players seemed to enjoy the fast tempo of the music. This Rhapsody in Blue is a historical masterpiece !!!!!
Every time Mr. Sumino performs "Rhapsody in Blue" it sounds different but always fresh and alive. 👏 The freedom and joyfulness in his playing is just captivating - and his smile... 😊
This is EASILY one of the best interpretations of Rhapsody, in my honest opinion. Cateen and RSNO were all equally on point. Soloists within the orchestra were immaculate. And I never tire of seeing that spontaneous cell phone duet. (the timing of that going off during the last piano cadenza is something else, and his response was just pure class AND dignified poise.)
I am very partial to the bernstein recording where he both conducts and plays piano as it introduced me to the piece but this one might just top it for me.
@@eliasbachner1898 Fair. I dislike the Bernstein interpretations, because of the further cuts made to the piece - so I prefer it when Rhapsody is played in its' entirety, like here and many other versions (including the original jazz band arrangement from 1924). @@dukeofrodtown1705true, but the interpretation of Bernstein’s was more classical. However, the interpretation here is more jazz+classical with jazz being slightly more overpowering.
Absolutely Amazing, after reading he is not just a pianist but also an engineer playing piano and being musical on such a high level, makes me freeze in amazement. He must have extraordinary genes and circumstances to develop such amazing abilities and elitism. Great to hear and see such a gifted and talented young man playing and making wonderful music. :-)
Unbelievable performance! His creativity and uniqueness shone on the stage so beautifully! He is definitely one of the most wonderful pianists even now, and he will step up on the stardom for sure.
He is absolutely perfect! What a wonderful and miraculous concert! All the sounds resonate freely and freely, as if they were alive. Those who were able to listen to this here tonight are incredibly lucky! I really love this performance❤

I’ve NEVER HEARD anyone play this piece LIKE THIS. I used to not like this piece. UNTIL I saw this performance. IT’S JAZZ!!! Maybe that’s why I didn’t like it before!!! Everyone else “CLASSIFIES” it! Meaning they make it sound classical. I heard this piece for the first time thanks to Hayato. Now I have a new appreciation for this music. 😊
I also never liked this piece until now and I love jazz. I just found the it a bit cheesy….but this is incredible. I get it now. It helps that the orchestra is also stellar.
It is a classical piece though it’s a mix of jazz and classical, so of course it’s going to have classical elements and sound classical at points I don’t understand where you were going with this
The director smiling towards Sumino just shows how incredibly impressed and proud he is of this young talent who shares the same love of music as he!! I love seeing this passion for music transcending cultural and language barriers (I know Sumino can speak English fairly well, but still!)
As a person now learning this piece, I have to applaud his creativity and playing true jazz in this, and stride too!!! I'll now have to think if I want to take the more creative route or work with what's already been written as an already rich piano part. Granted, there many moments in this piece that the piano has solos without the orchestra. This isn't Mozart, but the fun and creativity reminds of his concertos.
Gershwin would be grinning ear to ear!! I have a special place for Rhapsody in my heart because I played clarinet for years. I was born with a cleft lip and palate and managed to become quite accomplished. However when I turned thirty I had a revision surgery done and was unfortunately unable to recover my embouchure. I sadly had to walk away. I’m blessed to have made it as far as I did!
It’s a very rare experience for me that Joy brings tears in the middle of a performance! Hayato personifies music and rhythm, he’s purely natural. The conductor and the orchestra worked magnificently together as one! Congratulations!! Oh and he reminds us that the Melodica can be the centre of attention in the Royal Albert Hall!
Beautifully said. It did the same to me. Greetings from Austin, Texas! My father would have absolutely loved this. His dream was to be a symphony conductor, but his parents “strongly encouraged” he and his brother to be doctors. It was the 1950s.
