In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you a powerful and dynamic chess opening for Black against 1.e4. It is the Portuguese Gambit from the Scandinavian Defense, which arises after the following moves: 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.d4 Bg4.
The Portuguese Gambit is known for its aggressive nature and the potential to create unbalanced positions right from the start. Even grandmasters have lost against this gambit, which highlights its effectiveness as a surprise weapon. In fact, Magnus Carlsen himself has employed this gambit to defeat strong opponents like the Indian grandmaster Vaibhav Suri.
Learn how to unleash the full potential of the Portuguese Gambit and catch your opponents off guard with this dynamic opening!

''the Portuguese is of course when you sacrifice a potential football career for the sake of chess''. said with a straight face! brilliant. 🤣
I didn't know that GM Igor Smirnov was a footballer. Is that him playing for Zvezda St. Peterburg? 😋
1. Rxf8+ Kxf8
2. Nf5+ Kg8
3. Qf8+ Kxf8
4. Rd8#
nice ... I didn't see it
After 3. Qf8+ black can play Kh7 but then 4. Qg7#
Black can also refuse to accept the rook sacrifice and run with the king but it's still M10 and Black will lose the queen even if white doesn't find the forced checkmate.
King h7
I solved it by moving knight to f5 first, bishop pinned no checks available. What ever black does you take bishop with queen then take pawn on h file
@@lalosalamanka238then at the next move you are lost black queen to h2 and it's a checkmate
Your jokes and how you deliver them are getting insane!
That's good or bad
@@arch1q892 good of course "he`s forced to undevelop his pieces and might as well get ready for the next game" 😂
@@walter1824love that one😂
Puzzle of the day:
There's a mate in 1 threat of Qh2, so that immediately eliminates any move that isn't a check or something that blocks the threat.
Rxf8+ is the only check. If the king doesn't take, Rxf7+ wins the queen, and there are probably other moves that lead to mating attacks. Assuming the king takes,
Nf5+ threatens mate with the rook and knight. Black can delay with Qd6, but
Qxd6+ keeps up the checks. The king can run to g8, but
Qf8+ sacrifices the queen to draw the king back into the knight + rook mating net, finishing off with
Rd8#. If the king decides to run to h7 instead, Qg7# finishes the deal.

You are amazing Dear & respected Sir❤❤❤❤❤
Igor you are my favorite teacher, you made me reach 1600 elo rapid
Rxf8+:
1. If Kxf8 then Nf5+ and if Ke8 then Re1+ and the checkmate can't be stopped no matter where the king goes.
2. If Kg7 then Rxf7+ wins the Queen.
3. If Kh7 then Qd3+ forces the King back to g7 where Rxf7+ wins the Queen and the attack continues
Really this opening is so brilliant 👏. Thanks🎉
Fantastic, many thanks.
Hey man, I love your videos. My entire opening repertoire is based off of your opening videos. However I don't yet have a good opening choice against 1. d4. I want to be able to play the same setup (preferably something aggressive) against the Queen's Gambit and against the London. Do you have any recommendations?
wow great games love this channel
1.Rxf8+ Kxf8 (if Kg7 or Kh7 then 2.Rxf7+ and White will be a Queen ahead.) 2.Nf5+ Kg8 (If Qb4 or Rc5 then 3.Rd8#. If Ke8 then 3.Qe7#) 3.Qf8+ Kxf8 (if Kh7 then 4.Qg7#.) 4.Rd8#.
incredible
🥺
What was the time control in these games? Assuming blitz?
at 2:05, if white moves pawn, and you move Nb4 for the fork threat, doesn't black easily nullify that with Na3?
1. Rf8x+ Kf8x
2. Nf6+ Kg8
3. Qf8+ Kf8x
4. Rd8+ mate
What if white defends his d5 pawn with a pawn on c4?
Hi, please make a guide for 2.c4
1. Rxf8+ is the only winning move. 1 ... Kxf8 mates in 4 moves. 1 ... Kh7 or Kg7 mates in 8 moves (fewer if Queen does not take a rook on d6 if 1. ... Kg7 or rook on f7 if 1. ... h7.)
Wasn't there a video by you for same tactic but for White?
The move of the puzzle is Rxf8+ and there are a lot of possible lines, although the best one is a mate-in-9 position for black
I’m lost
1. Rxf8+ Kxf8
2. Nf5+ Rc5 to block check or Qb4?
nice lines in portugese gambit works well upto 1400
What if in the nc3 version they dont play d4 they bring the king in safethy and then develop the night ?
Rxf8+
The King must take it, as a fork with Rxf7 is coming.
Then Nf5+, sac the Queen on f8 if necessary before Rd8#
Every move must be a check because of the threat of ...Qh2#
This sequence of moves are gonna happen once in a blue moon, but greatidea none the less
I am encouraged to play this Counterattack.😎
Rxf8+ , Kxf8 , Nf5+ , Kg8 , Qf8+ , Kxf8 , Rd8####
Qb3 threatening the and F7 + leads to quick mate in black it is my answer to your puzzle in the last part of this vedio❤
I did indeed have an opponent play 3.D3, and I was scratching my head wondering, what now?
what if h3 on sixth move?
"Even Carlsen uses it" ehhh considering some of the other openings Carlsen has played, that's not saying much 😅
1. Rxf8+ Kxf8
2. Nf5+ Kg8
3. Qf8+ Kxf8
4. Rd8#
and if 1. ... Kg7 or h7 then 2. Rf7:+ and black looses the queen.
No black does not loose the queen. It loses the queen.
Sac the rook, knight f5 check, sac the queen, and finish with the rook.
Kf5...Qf8
Rxf8+ Kxf8 Nf5+ Rc5 Rd8#
Oh, e4. When I see e4 I run for the hills.
If this a gambit so magnus is a magnus gambit
Well hell, it's a good thing Carlsen wasn't playing this against Hans Niemann! 😛
This traps are helpfull to play against lower rated players
there are many moves to cover the queen. bishop, knight, it will beor can be a exchange blitz So little messy to say the least.
So Magnus tried Portuguese Gambit because I heard him say he wanted to be a footballer, lol 😂😂😂❤
Ben Finegold would never run into this trap
💪💪💪✌
I just play Bb5+ against this 😂
1. Rxf8+ Kxf8
2. Nf5+ Kg8
3. Qf8+ Kxf8
4. Rd8#
OR
1 Rxf8+ Kg7
2 Rxf7+ winning the queen
how is n-f5 check?
@@eclecticmusic123 discovered check by the queen
Not a natural move, but if King e2 after the Queen check it doesn't look good for black
around 3:50
Txf8+
why do so many idiots say N-f5 is check (after KxR f8)????
Why do you cover the dumb moves, instead of better defense moves?
Why are u dumb yourself?
That's adumb question, it's not as if you pay him to upload his content. He gives it out freely, least you could do is be grateful
this is so nasty
2:00 they usually go exf7+ Kxf7, Na3 Bc5, Be2 Re8, Kf1 Nh5
