This film was absolutely brutal to watch. Every time you get little glimmers of hope for the main characters, you just end up being swallowed by crushing despair due to the situations they later find themselves in.

Nerd fact - the actual spitfire flown by Hardy in the film, actually flew over the Dunkirk beaches during the battle back in 1940. It was shot down, stayed on the beach and then sunk out of sight during a storm. Another storm revealed it again in the 1980s. The wreck was then on display in a French museum. A wealthy American tourist saw it, bought it and sent it England (to the aircraft restoration company in Duxford - which in 1940 was the RAF airfield the plane last flew from) It was a massive restoration job. It flew again for the first time in the early 2000s, with the two daughters of it's Dunkirk pilot present, now old ladies. And then it appeared in this film and got to do it all again.

My Grandfather was at Dunkirk - he said he didn't care what happened to him after that because he already accepted that he was a dead man standing on that beach so he might as well live every minute like that from then on. Said the cup of tea and corned beef sandwich they gave him when he landed on British soil will always be the finest meal he has ever eaten.

This is my #1 movie of all time. I will always love it. I don't watch it much, because of fear of fatigue, but it will forever be my favourite movie of all time.

If people want to watch for the historical reasons, more power to you, you should be allowed to watch for that reason, or if people simply just want to watch it because it looks interesting to them.. that is great as well. We were the ones who beat Japan... Remember that? Also, both of my grandfather's fought the Nazi's, and every single one of my great Uncles fought the Nazi's. My one grandfather was on the front lines in North Africa for more than 500 days. I love how you guys always try to pretend that American's didn't fight in the war. It was your war, of course you guys did most of the fighting. They didn't attack America. Japan attacked America, and we took care of them.

I never seen an American WW2 movie where the U.S. is taking credit for everything. From what I've seen, American WW2 movies are mostly based around battles fought mostly by the U.S. military.

The British Expeditionary Forces referred to the fighting French (who bought time for the evacuation), like something out of legends of old. When they saw the French standing their ground, they compared them to the Spartans at the Battle of Thermoplyae because of their fierce resistance and honor. You see a lot of WWI equipment in this trailer because the British and French hadn't modernized their armies in the way the Nazis did. Because of that, they relied on surplus weapons and equipment left over from WWI. The British practiced Chamberlain-style isolation, while the French laid the majority of their forces on the Maginot Line in a false sense of security. This led to the Nazi's blitzing across the Ardennes forest (which the allies, particularly the French, thought impossible to cross with tanks, motorcycles, and other military vehicles along with several armies), which rendered most of France exposed on the left flank. The damage was done. And when the armies of the Third Reich encircled the armies of France and Britain, Dunkirk was the result.
The reason it's one of the most important battles in history is that it threw away the tactics used in every war up until that point. On the eve of WWI, many of the troops from participating countries were filled with glee, and thought the war would be over in less than a year. On the eve of WWII, the tone was far more serious and somber.. While many countries saw the advancement in weapon systems by the Nazis, they never expected for the war to move as fast as it did.. Poland was virtually conquered in two weeks, for example. That was unheard of, at the time. Dunkirk represents the first modernized warfare.
As an American, I have not forgotten about the bravery of the French (our oldest allies). The sacrifices of those French at Dunkirk remain in my memory and heart. Viva la France.

Had the Ruskies not invaded in Sep 17, Poland would have held even longer. Wehrmacht was NOT that powerful as you make it to be, in France they won only because of massive air support, because their shitty Pz II/III could not stand against superior and more numerous French tanks. Same goes for first 4 months of Barbarossa. Krauts only managed to get close to Moscow because of Air superiority, Russian T-34 was mopping floor with shitty German tanks. Panthers and Tigers only started appearing in large numbers in 1944, when Germany's fate was sealed, and even those tanks were over-enginerred in typical German fashion, and caused numerous problems. Tiger II is just an example of Kraut's gigantomania, and it was an unreliable, pet project just like Me262.

Russians lost SIX THOUSAND TANKS, compared to the germans 750 tanks lost. Russian tanks were absolute DOGSHIT compared to every other army in the war.

Panther was a better tank, however, it WAS based upon the T-34 design. And do you really think that the USSR did not inflate their numbers as well. I would trust the Wehrmacht reports over the Soviet reports.

Aw poor Harry Styles haters who strongly believe he will ruin this movie when you have absolutely no idea how good he can act. I've seen 95% of Christopher Nolan movies and I know he wouldn't waste his time on someone he didn't think had potential and could make his movie better. I'm sure he appreciates him luring his fan base in for this movie but he would never risk one of his big projects just for some extra fans (he has already many of them himself ). FIY not all directors are walking Harry fanatics who scream every time they see his face or hear his voice and even so there's nothing wrong with that once in a while. I'm a proud Directioner who's not here to defend just Harry but Christopher's movie as well because even if Harry wasn't in it I was still gonna watch it because some people can actually be Nolan AND Styles fan at the same time!
