Usually in F1 it's either the best driver in the best car or just the best car winning. Seeing the best driver not be in the quickest car and still keep winning like Max has done this season is something you get to see very rarely. Even though I'm a McLaren fan, I hope that people appreciate what Max is doing right now and how special it is.
Yeah maybe ppl will finally see that it was never the car. The car was good last year, but, Max’s skill is what did the job.
I am a Verstappen fan, I do. I also know that it can't go on like this. Verstappen got helped by mistakes from McLaren and Norris in the last 2 races, they will get their shit together soon and Norris will start winning races. Red Bull needs to step up if they want that constructors title. and even the drivers' title could become a struggle.

You gotta admit, Max's overtake on George was beautiful. And probably pivotal to them winning.
I was thinking Lando might've got the win if George had got on with it but he was funky and Lando lost more than 3 seconds behind him. Or you could say McLaren lost the winning margin in the pits.

Problem is... Max wins so often, people don't think it's anything special anymore. Red Bull don't have that dominating car right now but they still have Max. And that's what matters.
and he's not "just" winning. If not for the DNF he'd have an 80% win rate this season which is highest of all time bar his own achievement last year.

I know everyone is saying Red Bull doesn't have the fastest car anymore but they still have a pretty good car. Most data usually puts them p1 or p2. Yes what Max is doing is amazing but the car is good too. When it's not he also struggles.

Facts, Norris got Pole and Fastest Lap, and didn't get into DRS at the end thanks to him bottling the start.
Bar one slow pitstop, everything else was his fault.
When would people realize that at this point, driver of the day is simply about who has the largest fan crowd on social media. And what makes you think Max stand a slim chance against others when he doesn't even do much on social media.
The same day the kids or new drive to survive fans realize that this award is for admirable racecraft shown that race. Nobody cares about popularity or social media shit.

@@Septimus_ii Mostly because he is the undisputed dotd back in 2023. And you really can't make an argument against him when he put it on pole, lead every single lap and got the fastest lap as well. Whereas now, he is still the best driver, however, it requires you truly understand the race to see how great he is. This is not gatekeeping, but whoever think lando is a deserving DOTD this time around is delusional and has zero knowledge about F1.

I felt like DOTD should've been Max or Ham. There's no way you have the fastest car on the track, start from pole, finish 2nd and should be DOTD. At this point Lando just has the least objective fans that's all.

The reality is that yeah, overall max drove best today. However aside from the start Lando drove quite well. But more than that, Lando, because of his strategy was basically coming from behind most of the race. We saw him battle other drivers like the Mercedes, (great battle with George) and also put in laps catching max. He was where the excitement and tension came from this race and I think as a result that’s why people were entertained and why they voted for him.

Max won it every week until he was in the fastest car. It just goes to whoever has the most screen time and can portray themselves as an underdog
If Max was pushing the whole race like Lando then he would deserve but coasting around 0.8s slower than he could've gone isn't DOTD performance.
@@paperplane-db8qf It literally is. You have to be able to coast so hard in the first place. Which means you were able to drive that gap in the first place.
Which also means he was consistensly faster than norris over the entire race, not just in the last 15 laps while having considerably fresher rubber.
Its not a DotD performance to start on P1, bottle the start immediately to land on p3, not getting past P2 for WAY to long and then refusing the undercut SEVERAL TIMES despite being notified about this losing him position (again several times).
McLaren need to improve their strategy. They keep asking Lando what to do, ain't that their job to strategize for him? It's infuriating to hear
That’s the difference with RBR. They know what they’re doing. Max trusts them. And RBR trusts Max because they know he can execute a difficult strategy.
McLaren is indecisive. They give Norris way too much input. They need to let Norris focus on driving and give him the strategy and tools to win.
Norris has a tendency to fuck up pitstop strategies. He should have won Russia 21 and this year in Canada and Barcelona.
As soon as I heard him say he was racing Max, at that point I was just shaking my head, it was so obvious this wasn't going to be realistic any longer.
You can tell McLaren is not used to fight for wins, their strategy is nowhere near as fine tuned as Red Bull's in a game of fine margins.

Perez: two issues. He doesn’t drive Max’s car well. RB, hasn’t figured out how to modify/setup Max’s car to suit Perez’s driving style.
Perez needs to adapt, RB needs to figure out how to Perezify the car.

I'm honestly baffled with all this talk of the "second fastest car"... They're pretty equal, in fact the race simulation showed red bull slightly ahead of mclaren and they were almost evenly matched during qualifying... Perez can't handle the RB20, but neither could Piastri this weekend, that doesn't make the RB20 a slower car than the MCL38... In fact, unlike the RB20, the MCL38 didn't have any upgrades this weekend. Yes, Max is making the difference in the RB20, but so is Lando in the MCL38...
We saw today in 4 different races that the grid spot for P1 in Barcelona is badly chosen, happened in F3, F2 and F1A as well, just because the left side is the racing line during the race, it doesn't mean its the optimal side for the race start, which is shown by the fact that it wasn't hamilton behind Lando that could make the most of the slipstream on that long rununtil Turn 1, but Russel from P4, behind Max... 600 meters into a pretty fast right hander, by starting on the left side, you already have a longer way to get to Turn 2 than P2 on the grid...
Lando didn't get DOTD for losing position by Turn 1, he got it by driving an amazing race after that, getting back to P2 even with that weird gamble on trying the uppercut on a track that is known for having a strong undercut potential. Max did one overtake besides getting past lapped cars, Lando did a ton, driving in dirty air and STILL getting back to 2 seconds behind Max, who had clean air for most of the race, except for some backmarkers towards the end. That overtake by Lando on Russel alone should be enough for DOTD

Max won because Lando doesn't know how pitstop strategy works. Lando put himself 9 seconds behind Max from trying to go long on the first stint, it isn't like Max did anything to cause that.
Max can will all races but DOTD will still be Lando(with the fastest car too)....lol...

It's not about who the best driver is, it's about who gave the most entertainment, because you know F1 is there to entertain. Landos drive today was the most exciting and thereby the most entertaining. I don't get why people think its about who had the best drive. If it was just a popularity contest wouldn't the Orange Army put Max in the top 3 every week given their size and fanaticism?

I don’t understand why Red Bull didn’t sign Carlos. Perez is so inconsistent, Carlos isn’t. They need consistency to secure the championship.
They signed Perez because he backs Horner and doesn’t cause any internal chaos.
Carlos isn’t a team player. But he’s quick. So that might cause some friction. And Carlos Sr. and Marko have a bad history from 2015 because he spread false rumors to the Spanish media about Max going to Ferrari to increase his son’s chances to get the RBR seat.
While Sainz had nothing to do with that, he’ll likely never race for them ever again. They hold grudges.

Also, after being held up at Toro Rosso, Sainz gave Marko the bird and went off to Renault in 2017 as soon as the opportunity was offered. He didn't even finished the season.

My takeaways:
Checo hasnt gone off a cliff since signing, hes been falling for over a year.
Lando lost the race at the start by not covering off George. Russell getting ahead pushed him too far behind Max, meaning the obvious tire advantage they have was not an issue for Max to deal with.
If he covers off George and lets max stay ahead, he stays several seconds closer and probably ends up winning or fighting with 3-4 laps to go. Russell ruined his race and its Landos fault. Going long was the right decision for Mclaren, they have superior tire wear. They can give up time early and gain more back later.

Checo's peak was so much lower and so much shorter than last year that it's not really comparable
Perez was only looking good when Red Bull had a dominant car. As soon as Red Bull fall back closer to others, Perez is showing he is pretty bad, worse than Bottas at Mercedes I argue. At this point Perez has the Red Bull seat just because of his marketability in Latin America, as well as keeping Max happy, having an easy teammate.

Perez was extremely good in 2021 where the Red Bull was only the best car for 50% of the season while Merc had the other 50%.

Does Red Bull care about the constructors? I know we are always told they do, but to the average fan winning the drivers championship is THE win. So if Red Bull can win the drivers with Max, keep the Checo merch and sponsorship flowing, and get more wind tunnel time to boot, thats still a win in my mind even if you lose the constructors championship.

So the "going off the track and gaining an advantage" thing was explained on the broadcast, they essentially said that the rules for *this* race weekend were that so long as you come back on the track around the bollards your fine, but, also he was literally ahead of Charles when he went off the track so I don't know where the idea that he gained a position off the track came from in the first place. 🤷♂

Correct me if I am wrong, but Charles complained about the strategy in the first pitstop. Because they were talking about 2 plans but than it was 3 plan. But he made the call for soft, they wanted to give him hards same as for Carlos, but he wanted softs.

Perez fell off a cliff basically as soon Horner or Marko (forget who) said his dreams of winning a DWC have been removed. Dude has lost his will to win and that's what's killed his drive to do well imo.

Perez's biggest issue is the pressure. As soon as everyone started saying he would challenge for the title, mistakes creeped in which completely shattered his confidence
No one seems to understand that the reason vacarb's lack of pace is because they switched to an old rear wing. So the entire upgrade package was compromised.
It was a good race. Not a great one but there was something always going on and some real impressive passes from a few drivers with High Marks going to George Russell for that Turn 1 pass for the lead on the outside of Max and Lando! That's a highlight reel for sure.

George is in a slower car. So it makes sense that he gaps George.
Max’s entire gap was the result of him getting P1 and driving in clean air. Norris had to cook his tires behind other cars and try an alternate (less optimal) strategy.
We saw that when both were in clean air, Norris was faster. If he kept the lead, he’d have won easily.
Max literally runs away with the race every time he’s in the lead and we’re meant to believe the Red Bull isn’t the fastest 😂

Norris said it was difficult to pass when behind another car during an interview. If you didn't overtake quick enough you got stuck which looks to have happened to Perez.

I don't think Norris should have gotten dotd. His antics at the start made me think he shouldn't have gotten it. Drove a good race, but Max and Lewis were better I think. Certainly since McLaren clearly had the faster car today.

He finished 17 seconds ahead of HAM in a slightly faster car. Max and Lando were leagues ahead of everyone else. HAM started 3rd, finished 3rd so I don’t see how HAM would deserve it. Only Max
@@Duval-In-The-Wall I wonder if there was something wrong with the wheel locking system as it happened on the same tyre. I remember during the Stake issues they kept mentioning that it is built into the cars axels so any error or damage would cause issues regardless of the different wheels.

Norris lost his race when he was joking with his engineer about what strategy to take. When Max boxed for the last set of softs lando was about 4/5 seconds behind. If Mclaren boxed Norris right in that lap or the next one, he only would have to gain 5 seconds which we saw that he could until the end of the race... Don't understand why teams are always trying to be the next genius and not following what's more logic.

Albon actually explained why the second driver at Red Bull struggles after few races. He said Max likes the car super pointy, but after few upgrades and setup tweeks it becomes ridiculous. It's like driving with sensitivity up to max. Like if you have your mouse sensitivity cranked up so much, that even slight movement will move the cursor from one side of the screen to the other. He enjoys this, but the other guy struggles to compete with that, tries to push more, which leads to mistakes, confidence drops and you are basically done.

When will people finally stop spreading nonsense that any driver is being disadvantaged? It literally makes no sense. The teams are primarily interested in the constructors' championship. And for that you need both cars in the best case scenario. So it would be extremely stupid to disadvantage one of the two drivers...
If you read the comments on almost every Mercedes post, you would think Merc is on the verge of taking Hamilton out behind the shed. Lewis will get like p7, p3, and then p4 in practice then quali 5th and everyone will yell at Merc that they "touched the car" and that the "sabotage is so obvious". They also forgot that George is just a great quali driver whose nickname used to be Mr Saturday. They just can't handle Hamilton not winning and decide to take it out on a social media admin thinking that it'll get to Toto and mystically the team will improve overnight.

I'd love to see the pace deficit after George and Lando had that fight. I got no doubt it killed both their chances.
I mean, the team did tell George that they were going Plan B (which was the switch to the hard tyre) just after Lando overtook Lewis, so quite a bit before their battle. They told him he was doing great managing and even a bit too much on the medium, so I'm wondering if knowing he would switch to the hards kind of influenced his decision to battle with Lando, like 'oh I'm changing tyres soon anyway, might as well have a good fight before that'

With Perez, I feel it’s largely due to the fact that, as the season progresses, Red Bull’s developments lean more into Max’s unique driving style, which then leads to Perez having less pace in the car, or more mistakes from Perez while he tries to find the missing pace
