Matt, the team said on lap 48 - _right after Oscar pitted_ - that they wanted to re-establish the order, and that was repeated on lap 51. Yes, the team should have been more direct and authoritative in its tone, but Lando was told right at the time what he should do. It's not his fault that they messed up the strategy, but he can't say he didn't know what the agreement was, either earlier in the day or at the time. Not wanting to let a sure victory go is totally understandable, but his behavior ruined what should have been Oscar's big day and first victory.

Even if that wasn’t what McLaren were thinking, there’s a good chance that was what was going through Lando’s head, which might be why he waited so long to give the place back. We are often reminded of Murray Walker's famous quote "catching is one thing, passing is another" and it is even more true these days when the car behind loses downforce and suffers from worse tyre degredation. Add in that this circuit is known as Monaco without the walls and the fact that McLaren would have told Lando to just bring it home and not risk the 1-2 finish and there is absolutely no chance he would have managed to overtake.

Still, now after the Hungary GP, I'm convinced he is fed up with something personal/internal and projects it onto the race track. A lot has happened in RedBull in the past months and weeks, so I understand why Max might be fed up. The whole Horner situation, Newey leaving, his father, Helmut Marko and Horner not getting along, other teams catching up and Perez not performing. I don't think you need to be a genius to understand that this might have a big impact on a high-performance sports athlete and the team
