"Oil in water" Scam!

- Be aware of this scam that appears to be getting more and more common. Sell your car safely. Be strict with buyers:
1. Do not let them view during the dark if they get stuck in traffic 'tough'!
2. If more than 1 person is coming to view insist they look it at 1 at a time
3. If you have the bonnet open and someone wants to distract you, then insist the bonnet is closed before you move.
Check your exhausts for oil before test drive.
If you notice oil on your exhaust before test drive then pretend to be distracted, lock the car and go inside and call the police.
Also make sure to save information about perspective buyers e.g. their name, the reg number of the car they arrived in and insist on seeing identify of some sort before agreeing to a test drive.

Thanks Yan so much for this video. I was targeted by the same scam a couple of days ago near Winchester. Fortunately, I didn't accept their 'kind' offer of half the asking price. Not sure how badly damaged my engine (530d) is as drove for a few miles with multiple warnings flashing up on dashboard. Such a shame you can't trust people. The lads that turned up were actually quite likeable - as you say they rip you off with a smile.

Hi @@yanafloat I did clean it up okay after thanks, though spent several hours doing so.... Just sold it to a dealer today via Mororway, as I didn't want to risk same listing on Autotrader again - I may have got an honest buyer, but it just seemed too much like tempting fate. Quite sad to see it finally go really, it's been a very good car over 6 years for me. Hope the next owner cherishes it as much as I did. Will be wiser when selling next time! Cheers, Stuart

i'm a car trader and when i sell cars it's nothing but eastern european fella's who want to come and view... i'm too clued up for there oil tricks, so they just start lowering the price right down, i just say go and buy something else this cars not for you and drive off, ohh and i NEVER give them my address

I followed your instructions and took out the coolant reservoir. However, the coolant coming out of the hoses looked like it was mixed with oil. I probably need to do a flush of the system.

I had this done to me a few months back. I’m pretty clued up but I had never heard of this and got caught out. The process what you described is exactly what I experienced. I as looking at 2k bill until the mechanic and myself put 2 and 2 together and realised what had happened. On mine they also unplugged one of the injectors and the air flow meter. I still have the scammers phone number…
Sorry to hear they did that to you too! I reckon it’s probably a burner phone. Auto trader sends a message occasionally a few days after someone contacts you to let you know they are up to no good and then their phone stops. In my case our guy re-contacted me to let me know his new number but I was already onto him at that point.

Had a couple of Albanian guys and a cockney guy try this years and years ago with my mother and her mk5 2008 Golf GTI edition 30. She told the guys she had to wait for her son to get home until she could make the sale final…. This was due to her going back inside and then watching on cctv them do a exact similar thing to her car. Tried giving £5k for what at the time was a £20k to £23k.
Most European look the same how could you tell they was albanian? For future perseverance.
run scans on your car and do a printout of the results for proof there is nothing wrong with your car.

This happened to me a few nights ago. But how can I fix what they've done? My highlander hybrid now goes into limp mode and all kinds of codes are coming up with check engine light and smoke coming from the engine all after the oil and coolent was flushed
Sounds like a garage job. Did the oil go through the cooling pipes into the engine? It’s possible they unplugged stuff. Look for disconnected plugs e.g. mass airflow sensor
@@yanafloat after three mid eastern dudes sabotaged my suv the main guy wanted to test drive it and when I let him drive he punched it hard, way past the speed limit so when we arrived at the meeting point the highlander was smoking a lot. I wonder if he caused extra damage from that. Or maybe after the flushing my vehicle went into a safety mode of some sort and that's why all the codes are flashing and it's in limp mode
@@digitalcurrency4737 it’s probably just smoking from the oil up the exhaust. Ref the error codes check for anything unplugged under the bonnet. Check MAS sensor, ht leads
