It's not mandatory but strongly recommended.
Also, it's a good idea to take the excess oil that has drained from the engine, mix it with water and sand, equal parts mind you, and use it as a good fuel additive to clean the combustion chamber real good. Just some food for thought.

I dont know how I can ever thank you for this amazing and informative video. After all these years I cannot believe I have been doing oil changes wrong.
Now see I use tight plus 6 turns and I am not a rookie so I use ultra grey silicone. Other than that you do it very similar to how I do it. Oh great tip on putting in the drain plug! You're the man Ray!!

Absolutely professional job! I'm sad I've missed some of these pro tips. I'm going to go outside and drain the oil out of my vehicle and take it for a drive to stop any leaks.
Doing my first oil change and started watching your video.. half way through, I lost my internet.. no problem though, I saw the most important part.. the oil filter prep. Thanks much!
As a professional mechanic (since 1985) I can assure you that this video is the truest, most accurate representation of what we go through on a DAILY basis. As a heavy equipment mechanic/truck mechanic since 1995, I can honestly admit that this does not EVEN begin to portray the ineptitude, the quackery-- nay; the SHAME that pervades the industry. I have had to remove oil filters with an air chisel, only to find out that customer installs his own filters when they need to be changed... Dafug??? My hat is off to all of my fellow greasemonkeys out there dealing with this crap.
@@logicthought24 my pet peeve is threads stretched on oil drain plugs in engines, transmissions, transfer cases and/or differentials ALL ON THE SAME TRUCK that were installed with a 3/4" impact with torque multiplier... on a non-pressurized sump. Never knew you were a Jiffy Lube technician trainer. You have most of their techniques down pat. Great video! Love the choice to not charge for replacing the cam gear!
A couple of recommendations: 1. I would use a quick setting epoxy on the oil filter gasket instead of the RTV and loctite combination You used. You want to make sure that filter stays on nice and tight after all! 2. For the additional 40+ quarts of crankcase oil fill past the initial OEM spec 5 quarts, use 90 weight instead of the 15-40 weight you mentioned. That will further reduce the chance of leaks. Or … even better, moly grease.
Y'all talk like city slickers... Weld the damn filter on. They never go bad, that's just some old lady salesman noise... Secondly, 30W is all you need... Engines, gears, transmission... Hell, I even put some in the washer fluid to make the rain bead off ..

I spent 6 hours changing my headlight fluid and when I got the bill for my prescription windshield I nearly passed smooth out. I thot filling my tires with water to prevent air leaks was dumb until I installed my kids restrain seat in the trunk to keep him safer and quiet on long rides. People just don't take time to really learn trade secrets from true professionals anymore, keep the tips coming!😉
Pro tip: 1/2" Breaker Bar is a must for torqueing the oil pan drain. Also if you strip out the metric threads, just put in SAE drain plug. works every time. Thanks for the parody Ray- you saved the Interwebs and made my day.
I like to be thorough, I always use a 1" drive with a 6 foot breaker bar, that makes sure I have a nice clear bore hole to pressure fill from the bottom. Trouble is it keeps running out once I remove the nozzle, it's had nice fresh oil coating everything at least.
All 3 of yall have it wrong, you need a 1 inch drive impact gun for taking off semi lug nuts and have the tool on max then you might touch the right amount of torque for it to stay in the aluminum oil pan
That was the funniest shit I've seen thank you for making my day. I showed my grandfather the video. He has 60 years of being a mechanic. He's retired now but at first he was starting to freaking out. He was mad at me cuz I was laughing thank you for all your videos.

You broke my brain there for minute. I almost went into a dark depression when you put the lube into the oil filter 😂 I quickly realized... I see what you're doing there.

Holy hell Batman! I was literally crying from laughing so hard🤣🤣 Ray, I just recently found you, and what a gem you are. What amazes me is how versatile you are. In my former life as a mechanic, most of us specialized in certain brands. We worked on German cars only. You can work on anything gas and diesel. Nice! Loving the content.
He is funny lol. For me it’s just the little comments as he’s working on things. I chuckled when he’s undoing the oil filter going “hot hot hot”, goes back to unscrew some more and goes “another hot!” He’s just so relatable 😂
I was believing everything you were doing, right up to the point where you used the brake clean to make everything "nice and shiny". No scammer would clean up like that. They'd spray oil on things instead to make sure that there would be some oil drips when the customer got home, causing them to return to get the oil leak fixed. You almost fooled me, but made that one slip up!
What he should have done was pour motor oil on top of the resonator to ensure that the smoke would plume up to the driver side window. That would definitely bring a customer back and you could say "Oh, wow, it was worse than we thought. Whoever did this work before must have screwed up your bed plate which caused a slow leak down to your exhaust system, which caused it to rot and corrode. Recommend replacing bed plate, and replacing exhaust system with OEM." Cha-ching labor.

That was good I enjoyed it, I know you're just being sarcastic and having fun but the sad part is there are actually shops out there that do stupid crap like that to rip you off. Glad to see there's an honest person left
I can't believe I've been doing oil changes without a 1/2" impact for all these years. No wonder it takes me so long! And that tip on getting the drain plug to bite, priceless. Really enjoyed this one Ray!
I'm glad a professional finally admits that the way I've installed filters for almost 50 years is the proper way to do it. I use black form-a-gasket, though. Less chance the filter will fall off when you're driving.
There were numerous really obvious hints, but if they got to the cam phaser falling out the drain plug and still took it seriously, they've probably already screwed up their car previously anyway haha
Thanks for the quality professional training video. I followed your guidance exactely and changed the oil on the church van. I had to stop at 40 quarts when it wouldnt take anymore. I looked for the cam phasers in the oil pan and didn't see them. So I added a couple. I also used two part epoxy to glue the filter on and the oil pan plug in. Can't to too careful.
I had a wife, literally a genius by IQ who called to say the oil was low on her 3 cylinder Geo Metro. I told her to fill it until the oil was at the full mark on the oil stick. She called back later from the highway. The car was smoking badly. I drove out to see what was happening. The car was throwing out an oily smoke screen like a war machine. I ask her if she filled the oil. She said it wouldn't get to the full line. I asked how much oil she put in. She said 11 quarts. She had put oil into the engine and checked the transmission fluid stick rather than the oil level stick and saw that it was still low. Called my great mechanic. He said just to bring it in. He drained the oil and it ran fine from then on.
@@boyracer3477 There was a young airmen (18yo) at my shop in the 80s that had a VW rabbit. We were outside at the break area when he pulled up leaving a huge smoke cloud behind him. Thank you Ray. I'm a first time viewer of your channel and this video gave me some valuable tips. Regarding the oil pan drain plug, I find it handy to drill a hole in the bolt head and insert a cotter-pin to ensure it stays secure. Keep up the good work and know that when that phone rings, I'm trying to mimic the sound right along with you.
Also make sure you drain the transmission (instead of the oil drain plug) and then add an extra 5-6 quarts motor oil to the engine. Your customers will love you after that.

Man, ill be honest. It took me until the end when the gear allegedly "fell out" of the oil pan for me to realize this entire video was bullshit. ROFL. Good job, sir. This was top notch sarcasm
Ray, so disappointed in you right now. Shaking my head. You didn't even notice that the tires were not filled with premium air! No check of the blinker fluid level either. You missed a major upcharge right there! How is the shop supposed to make any money if you don't offer those critical services to the customer? Loved the video. Just enough salt to season it properly for the trolls.
Everyone knows there is no difference between regular air and premium air. But its springtime and I bet those tires have winter air as we head into summer. If something isn't done immediately well, I'm just going to say think of the children and if you are declining this service I need you to initial here so your lawyers don't come see me after the inevitable happens.
@@nickwarner8158 Ah, but beyond premium air there's helium! A car with helium-filled tires is lighter, therefore more fuel-efficient, than one with air-filled tires. Just be sure to bring the car in for regular top-ups, as helium is somewhat of an escape artist. For minimum maintenance, other the other hand, tires inflated with sulfur hexafluoride should maintain their pressure for a good long time, absent actual punctures, and the extra density of the inflation gas will add stability to the vehicle, helping it remain right side up during maneuvering. (This is especially recommended if you drive a Reliant Robin.)

This is incorrect. The only safe way to reuse an old oil filter is to order a case of Brake Kleen and spray the filter in and out until all cans are gone. It’s also imperative that this be done without ventilation. The fumes are what do the real work.
Good troll Ray ! You scared me for a moment there . Reminds me of the time a dealership didn't put the drainplug back in the pan , filled the oil and called it a day. She drove home and oil was everywhere . They ended up buying a new engine on a 16 month old engine.

A couple of recommendations:
1. I would use a quick setting epoxy on the oil filter gasket instead of the RTV and loctite combination
You used.

You must be one of those types who rides fast and loose with safety. I use a 3/4 drive. Charge an extra $20 on the invoice as a "courtesy fee".
All 3 of yall have it wrong, you need a 1 inch drive impact gun for taking off semi lug nuts and have the tool on max then you might touch the right amount of torque for it to stay in the aluminum oil pan

Recommend replacing bed plate, and replacing exhaust system with OEM."
Cha-ching labor.

The extra oil can be added pretty much anywhere: gas tank, air filter, tires, or just pour it over the dashboard.
@@googiegress This made me laugh out loud. Spilt my tea too. Excellent.

@@K7DFA Agreed, a solid "April Fool's" prank has no time table. They occur only when the proper stars align.👍
The extra engine oil gave me a flashback from 25 years ago when my girlfriends' mother convinced her to fill the engine oil up to the filler cap and tried to start the car . It died , the car , not my future mother in law . I bought her a replacement car and married her . The folly of youth .
Loved the video, but Ray you forgot to check the headlight and blinker fluid levels and a recommendation to the customer that they should top those off for safety. Don't want those lights to fail during normal nighttime vehicle operation. It could be bad. Besides, Halogen fluid is on sale right now.
So I see you just hate money huh? Not even going to upsell that muffler belt that is cracked and could fail at any minute? Do you want to see them come back on a wrecker next week? Its only a $500 service, thats like 25% of what and Iphone costs and its not like you can drive an Iphone.
Mr Ray , how did you manage to copy ' Australian Mechanics Apprentice instruction ' video , I thought it was only available at all Wombat Wholesale outlets !
We also overcharge 100% for short circuit elongation service !
Very nice work :)
Did you eventually pick the wrong releasing Date for this Video ? This should come out in 2 days ;)
