Surprised you didn't mention seals worn by the Grey Knights. There are references to them sometimes being writ with specific hexagrammic wards to ward off daemons
They always remind me of the Japanese "ofuda" talismans, and they serve a similar purpose - blessings, wards against evil, good luck charms, etc. Another great video, Ian!
I love all the lore videos, but these lil views into small but important parts of the 40k universe are my favorite! More of these kinds of videos exploring the smaller details that fill out the lore behind the bolters and warpcraft please!
What's fascinating to me about Warhammer 40k is that it seems to be a setting comprised entirely of aesthetic elements that are then backfilled with lore or symbolic meaning. I can't think of any other setting that does it backwards like that.
I'm not sure that's true. Firstly, it's not a particularly accurate description of 40K (which also draws heavily on historical and written inspiration). Secondly, most IPs do this to some extent (especially those based on films or other visual media), so it's not something uniquely characteristic of 40K.
I'm fairly certain plenty do it, just not to the same scale. A setting that features mecha, for instance, does so because they are cool, and then chooses how to explain why and how such an physics-defying and impractical machine was built.
A lot of comic books do this. It’s referred to as “retroactive-continuity” and serves to provide new context for old stories. A big recent one is Marvel’s Venom, who has been retconned to having a connection to a bunch of space characters who otherwise had bit parts in forgotten stories.
@@joshuadarrowgundam has some good examples, like the original show’s format of having a new experimental mech show up to menace the heroes was later used to explain how that contributed to zeon losing the war; they fielded too many experimental units that didn’t have standardized parts, so when they were damaged, they couldn’t be used anymore Another retcon I liked was taking a throwaway character from the original series who was depicted as a stupid oaf and showing that this was a result of a psychotic break he suffered when he contributed to a colony being dropped on earth. He returned to his wife after the incident and when confronted with his new born son he snapped and rationalized that he must be an amoral thug if he was capable of such death and destruction
It's probably bc 40k has, by most of its existence, been focused on looking cool with little need for explanation. It's only been catering to people for the later third of editions who needs everything explained in excruciating detail
I want to see a formerly imperial world that has been cut off from the imperium so long that they have come to believe in a totem animal deity called The Purity Seal
The seals on Titus and his squad's armour getting burned away might also have something to do with the Library of Lies that was bleeding into that cultist location on Zsah’Uj. The Purity Seals or what they might be could be speaking truth and thus be burnt away by the warp influence of Tzeetnch's Library of Lies. Since they weren't lies they were destroyed in fire, rather than manifesting from fire, as seen in the fresh lie created and added to the library. The paper with the Dark Tongue runes inscribed on it that we see be created as the drop pod lands.
One thing I've always suspected about the use of purity seals on models is that they were, at least in part, designed to cover small gaps or mistakes made during model building. This is just a personal theory though, it may be entirely coincidental.
To be honest, for my Marines at least, the more purity seals a trooper or vehicle has, the more times I botched the assembly and am covering over the damage.
For the Imperials skulls are the loving face of the Emperor. Chaos mainly does it to piss Imperials off. For the rest they're worn for pure badassery. For Khorne skulls are everything above
The weirdest place I've seen purity seals is on russian soldiers filmed in Ukraine. Yup. Purity seals on russians, and Khorne is part of the Ukrainian armed forces. I don't think anyone at GW in the 80s forsaw both sides in a post-soviet war adopting imagery from Warhammer

They're actually Purity Sea Lions.

"needs more purity seals" is a legit statement in WH40K. 😂
so they are technically 40K swag ?
The more seals you have, the more important you are. And if you wear a silly hat or no hat, and stand on a rock you are VERY important in 40K
Tactical rock supremacy!
1:02 "not the most obvious thing about 40K", correct. That would be the skulls. So many skulls.

I 100% didn’t just come here to find out if there are Bee worlds to make wax for the imperium. Please Ian tell me I need to know!!!
Agriworlds, baybeyyyyy! xD
They have Cemetery Worlds so Bee Worlds aren't that odd.
that's what are the Hive Citys are for, i mean, they need a lot of Wax
I don't have a source, but iirc a lot of organic material the Imperium needs in bulk like vellum for scrolls or wax is vat grown.
@@enisra_bowman And the tanks, and the chimeras, and the lasguns, and the special weapons... Just ask Necromundan and Armageddon hive cities.

Absolutely fantastic video as always. I was just talking about purity seals with my fiancée a few minutes before this video went up! lmao
Visually, they remind me of participation awards.
Yeah it’s like getting your 25m swimming certificate but much cooler, having a purity seal instead would have been pretty sweet. Proud moments.
The secret level animation makes me think they could work as basically chaos-geiger counters
Love your content! Hope to see a Minotaurs chapter video at some point in the future!
18 minute video about paper? Yes please mate
Purity seals are the fortune cookie of the grim darkness in the far future.
The real question is how they keep them on their armour and weapons all the time.
To be honest, for my Marines at least, the more purity seals a trooper or vehicle has, the more times I botched the assembly and am covering over the damage.
Saw today when scrolling, there was a Darktide pic of a purity seal on the air-con unit lmao.
"Purity Seal" makes me think of the foil on the top of a new bottle of Tylenol or the pop-up lid on jars of jam.

HI, JAMBLPAINTS8453 🤖
I always feel that the wax should surely have melted away whenever I see one put on a gun, or especially a flamer. Maybe it isnt even wax.

Would appreciate a vid about perpetuals please thanks
"longer lasting material" :)
Cool vid 👍
What are purity seals?
We just don't know.
I thought they was just to say there rank or what battles they have served in ?
I want a purity seal because I was a very good boy
Does that thumbnail not piss you off
Bequin discussion…when?
In the grimm dark reality of the 21 century Russian soldiers have been seen wearing those in Ukraine.
