This album Singles Going Steady was named by the NME as the "greatest punk record never made". Its a perfect album which shows all theyre amazing tracks in one album. Ever Fallen In Love, Autonamy, Everybodys Happy Nowadays, Harmonys In my Head, Lipstick, Why cant I touch it? Just a few of the amazing stuff on this album. Keep going through it!!

Harmony In My Head rules! Thanks to The Buzzcocks for bringing The Sex Pistols to Manchester's Free Trade Hall in 1976. Peter Hook, Mark E. Smith, Tony Wilson, and Morrissey were in the audience and we all know how The Pistol's influenced those guys.

Amazing record. In high school we would crash a frat party and dance to this until covered with sweat. The first band I was in, a garage band at college, covered "Ever Fallen in Love" at my insistence. Always a fan favorite.

Always loved the Buzzcocks. Try Sham 69 - Hurry Up Harry, The Damned - Smash It Up, Killing Joke - Follow the Leader, The Dickies - Stuck in a Pagoda with Tricia Toyota..... Undertones are brill, the John Peel playing Teenage Kicks was great, pretty sure I was listening at the time. This period of punk was very short. Cheers

Husker du, Moby , to name a few. For the ones liking the 'Singles..', I recommend you go through 'Live Bites', and 'Another music in a different kitchen'. Both great stuff by a great band.

Buzzcocks are tied in first place for favourite UK/Irish punk band. Stiff Little Fingers share the position. For me, Buzzcocks foreshadowed pop-punk. Catchy, clever, more widely accessible. But that description sort of takes some of the power of their songs away. In some ways, they were their own unique sound.

    • @Richarddraper
      @Richarddraper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Stiff Little Fingers would be well worth checking out. The Fingers are more hard edged than the brilliantly clever and melodic Buzzcocks. Anything off their Inflammable Material album would do, but it would definitely be good to see Suspect Device, Wasted Life, Alternative Ulster or Johnny Was get a listen.

They are so easily appealing because, in addition to the music (like the Clash, they benefit from better-than-"punk" drumming), Pete is a fantastic writer of pop, love, and SAD songs. His lyrics stand on their own, inside of punk or out.

Their first record was one of the first UK punk records, a 4 track ep called Spiral Scratch. The track Boredom has a guitar solo with only 2 notes. The early punk bands were rebelling against 70s rock, especially prog with their endless guitar solos and the belief that you had to be a musical ‘god’ to create music. The 2 note solo was a British two-finger salute to them. V

Pete was a great friend of mine in the 60s and 70s. We played in bands together (Kogg) being the most successful. Pete wanted to go down the punk route… I was stuck in rock.

Such a seminal band of the seventies punk scene. You're right to keep listening to 'Singles Going Steady'. It was the first thing we heard by them in the US. It collects all of their singles and B-sides, up to that point.
I've always wished that Howard Devoto had stayed past 'Spiral Scratch'. Then again, we might not have Magazine if he did, and that would be tragic.
I'd love for you to listen to anything off of the first four X albums. Just the vocals by John Doe and Excene Cervenka are enough to keep you interested. L.A. punk at its finest.

Ned and Janet from Spain say Yay for the amazing Pete Shelley, Steve Diggle, Steve Garvey and John Maher aka BUZZCOCKS ! I hope you continue with more tracks by them as we think you'll become a fan. Their original line up included Howard DeVoto who split to start the equally awesome but much darker and more complex Magazine. Magazine's original guitarist John McGeoch ( proniunced Mah Gay Occh ) left after the first 2 albums to join Siouxsie and the Banshees, had a short career, died young but was a big influence on guitarists like John Frusciante of RHCP.

Buzzcocks were brilliant. There's some more recent punk that's also great - check out NOFX for similar great (and sarcastic, ironic, bitter, or just funny) lyrics. Check out "The Separation of Church and Skate", "Linoleum", and maybe the best song about politics in the USA ever written: "The Idiots Are Taking Over". They also did a brilliant punk cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way". Great Buzzcocks reaction! Check out X from back in the day too. And my favorite band from those times, XTC.

Have you ever heard Me First and the Gimme Gimmes? They do punk covers of pop and rock songs in a not entirely serious manner. The band members come from various punk groups with Fat Mike of NOFX as the lead singer. Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters was also a member.
Anyway, they are a lot of fun and great for a sing along during a car journey. Here's an example of their style, their Punk cover of Lionel Richie's "Hello": th-cam.com/video/gvXKM2-poIw/w-d-xo.html

I enjoy this album! It's a little spotty for me, but there are some *absolute* gems on it. I went through a short-lived phase where I listened to punk often and these days I listen here and there. Similarly, I don't listen to metal as much anymore. I still very much enjoy bands from "heavier" genres, but I don't find myself going back to them as often for some reason. Having said that, I truly appreciate the DIY attitude of punk. I appreciate them singing about subjects that most weren't in a way that no one else was. I appreciate people picking up a guitar with minimal skills and learning as they played. It opened the door into a world that many probably felt was closed off to them. I mentioned it before, but check out Punk: Attitude. It's a great doc that will give you a good background on punk music.

It's not unfortunately. Maybe because it was on Spiral Scratch which was an EP not a single on their own indy label and / or it was question of publishing rights ??

I've said this before and I'll say it again. When you think Buzzcocks, think The Monkees melodic pop songs done in a punk vernacular. You know... noisy guitars, angst vocals; plus a great drum and bass combo holding the fort. The Damned might be the band I most admire within the punk genre however the Buzzcocks have the pop songs that make me smile and feel joyous for life again.

I was 12 years old when punk hit the UK in the summer of 1977. At such a young age, the poppier bands appealed to me more than the heavier or more political bands. Buzzcocks were my favourite at that time, along with The Stranglers and X Ray Spex. IMHO, Buzzcocks are pure pop punk, as opposed to the more manufactured likes of Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Sum 41 etc, who took an already well established genre and cleaned it up for mass commercial consumption.

I always loved the drumming on Buzzcocks records; they wouldn't be asnything like as good wihout him. He's a good photographer as well.
I saw them supported by The Slits once, at Retford Porterhouse. They were very good, even though I still prefer early Slits.

The Fall wouldn't be a bad one to try - something poppy like Leave the Capitol, or something not poppy like Garden or Eat y'self fitter - as you're just done.

This was the first song in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock so I have some nostalgic fondness for this song, even though I'm not really a fan of Buzzcocks otherwise. I like this song, however.

The 'surfer rock' vibe you noted is not coincidental. The Buzzcocks more or less invented the 'buzzsaw' continuous guitar sound of two, slightly distorted guitars playing the same chords in very fast tempos that you hear in a lot of West Coast punk bands. Their influence on pop music especially in the US is criminally unrecognized. I'm not surprised you are drawn to them as they were one of the most musically adept and melodic UK punk bands. Beyond the obvious big hits everyone mentions, their music had progressively more experimental elements which can be heard more on the b-side of Singles Going Steady (The A side is all the hit singles, the B side is those records b-sides, and if you didn't know that you really wouldn't guess, that's how good they were). In the eighties, Pete Shelley their lead singer and chief songwriter even had a few electropop hits which are also worth a spin, including Telephone Operator and Homosapien.

Punk-pop. You might like Billy Idol’s first band, Generation X. Maybe early Jam and the Rich Kids (good album, bad production) too. I like all the Buzzcock’s singles though “Harmony in my Head” is probably my favorite.

I love Buzzcocks, simple but well written and performed punk.
I hope that after your X-Ray Spex review you had a listen to the studio version of Oh Bondage Up Yours and that you will give the band another try, maybe with The Day the World Turned Dayglo (th-cam.com/video/nfv9VbJqV_s/w-d-xo.html) or Identity (th-cam.com/video/Pst5K6uEPUc/w-d-xo.html).
Also, Sham 69 are worth a try with their Hurry Up Harry (th-cam.com/video/kbcONYzM7jQ/w-d-xo.html) and Borstal Breakout (th-cam.com/video/8R4HJGgiEfc/w-d-xo.html) are worth a try.

Post punk - Gang of Four. Great bass, creative innovative guitar, political vocals but you don’t need to know what it’s about. Some songs. "At Home He's a Tourist", "Damaged Goods", "I Found That Essence Rare",
    “Paralysed"

I hope this means you're coming around to a point where you're ready to give Eat it Up Worms Hero another go. If you want to try a *Cardiacs* song that has "a bit of punk in it", but nothing crazy to go with that (just a little side serving with some pop in it, and then afterwards, a hidden track after a while, where it sounds like they managed to get their hands on a church organ somewhere), then you might find that *Will Bleed Amen* has enough of what you like in it to please you. th-cam.com/video/NrJTtDT8T5k/w-d-xo.html
