  • How to find and hire an exterior cleaner? That is the question.
I clean roofs, decks, patios, and siding here on "olde Cape Cod." My service area is pretty limited because mine isn't a big company, I focus on quality over quantity, etc; I'm pretty busy right here in the towns around our home. For this reason, I typically don't travel to clean.
If you are outside my service area and are looking to hire an exterior cleaner, this video is for you.
If you want written instead of spoken words, here are the steps I recommend:
    1) Ask neighbors, local paint stores, and local hardware stores for their recommendations on who to contact.
    2) Contact those cleaning services with a description of your cleaning project and a general description of where you live. Ask if yours is a job they may be interested in.
    3) If you find somebody interested, ask them to take a look so that they can get you a written work proposal. Also, ask for their certificates of insurance (liability, workers compensation, AND commercial auto).
    4) Once you have their written work proposal, verify with them that everyone on the job site is covered with workers' compensation. Also, ask why they plan plan clean the surfaces how they will. Lastly, ask for recent local references.
    5) If all checks out OK, hire them, pay them well for a quality job, and enjoy your oh-so-clean house!

I don't always take advice, but when I do, it's yours.

If only these exterior cleaning contractors existed in Baltimore city. The neighborhood Facebook pages are flooded with recommendations but then you talked to the guys and they are doing exactly what you say… no insurance or wrong insurance, power washing rather than soft washing, sending crew out that aren’t experienced. Sigh… so here I am doing it myself, when I really wish I could bring someone in to do it for me. It’s not even about the cost, I just want it done right! Thanks for all your advice.

Nate, Thanks for all the advise you given me regarding wood cleaning and the chemicals used. Unfortunately I’ve decided to sell my 12volt pump, hose and reel and battery. There just isn’t enough deck and fence cleaning in the Richmond area to justify keeping a tank, battery and hose reel on my small trailer. When requested I will use my X jet to apply the chemicals for any deck/fence cleaning projects😊..Hill

Every area is different. At least you gave it a shot and now you know what’s marketable where you are.

I know… now I’ll need to go 3 days without speaking, just to even things out..
