No, it does not drag you down. You just float with the current far from shore. At some point, you can swim parallel and will return to shore down the beach from where you entered. I really don't understand how these people died.
My friend’s brother died few years ago because he didn’t follow signs of warning. Don’t trust ocean or sea, you can’t fights its power. Hope people learn lessons.

If your from inland and going to any beach, make yourself familiar with the flag meanings and dangers of currants and rips. The beaches world wide are beautiful but they are not a lake or swimming pool and have dangers you may not understand or have knowledge of. Born in Oklahoma, moved to Florida. Learned some lessons the hard way.
Poor family. It wasn’t the rip tide that killed them. It was them swimming against it that killed them. Don’t fight it. It will save your life. Rest in Peace
I know this is going to sound unsympathetic and I assure you it's not but.....as a parent...why would you bring your kids swimming when there's a red flag telling you not to???? My sympathy lies with the children who will never recover from this .
"Let it take you out to sea" I've heard everything but this.. because if you get pulled too far out, you may not have enough energy to get back to shore and that's key.. keeping your head up and keeping your energy at all cost. Know the signs of rip current to begin with, what to look for in the movement of the water.. sometimes this wont even work but it helps. Another thing is by a float that comes with a strap so it's attached to you. Read the safety instructions too. You can also put a whistle made for water rescue in your pocket if you have one, make sure its secure. Safety in numbers. If you have any children, even if it looks absurd, make sure they have something on their body like a lifejacket/pfd. The beach is a pretty safe place but you're also touching mother nature. It's the same as going out to the wilderness, you dont know what you're going to run into. A bit of caution and education goes a long way. You can also go to beaches where lifeguards are stationed. They'll not only see rip currents but make sure you dont go in. Look for beach flags too, they're symbols of current, sharks, storms, etc.

I have had this happen in California. I didn't know it was called a rip tide. A strong current flows from the beach to the sea taking you with it. You see the shore recede. Eventually you can swim parallel to the beach. It does not require any strength or endurance. Just remain calm.
Ive been on the beach when they have had those red flag warning out and people go in the water anyway.I know this sounds stupid and insensitive of me but when Ive seen this happen I say to myself dont they see the warning how stupid can people be.🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
I've been caught in a current on the lake with my cousin as a child. She did her best to find a calm area we could swim to and we joined hands and swam to shore
The legislature should pass a law treating red beach flags like red traffic signals so they mean STOP! Not simply 'be aware'. It costs taxpayers thousands of dollars to rescue folks that ignore the red flags. It should be a $200 fine against anybody who goes into the water when there's a red flag flying from the lifeguard shack. That will cut down tremendously on these rip current drownings.
How did they drown?? Could they not swim?? Rips will pull you out a little ways, but don’t pull you under. Literally just floating on your back until it’s calm is all you need to do. And most of the time, once you reach the end of the rip going out…the current & waves will push you back towards the shore. I don’t see how people just panic and drown themselves. I know it sounds insensitive, but how does survival instincts not kick in?? I guess people react differently, but I’ve been pulled out before and my instinct was to float on my back when I couldn’t swim out of the current.
Tragic story, but there is so much information out there, no reason to drown in a rip. People don't realize how big, powerful and dangerous the ocean can be, they just jump in, even if they can't swim. Interesting that we don't get a lot of stories about dangerous rip drownings in the Pacific Islands communities, they're teaching their kids about the ocean from the day they're born.
In order to survive a rip current, you have to know to swim, because the rip can take you up to 2 miles away from shallow water. If you don't know to swim (at least one mile), don't enter the water in a beach. Go to a swimming pool instead
The ocean is seriously dangerous. You must take caution. I stupidly thought I could lift my kids up while swimming in the ocean and threw out my back. I couldn't even move. The weight of the waves literally knocked my back out. I had to go to the ER. It wasn't even a high wave. Never turn your back ever
To all who visit Panama City Beach: Go swim at St. Andrew’s Park in the “The Jetties” it’s a literal lagoon. Your toddlers will be safe there too and you can see all the ocean life in there. Your safe from the gulf by a huge wall of bordering rocks. Xo! I went to the main beach in my mid 20’s and I was up to my knees and I had to climb out on all fours….and it wasn’t even RED FLAGGED. I never went back in that part and I lived there for 20 years and the only place I will ever swim is the Jetties or Ecofina creek.
I’m just not sure how an adult can’t see riptides. My daughter is 17, she has known what they looked like since she was old enough to be in the ocean. Be smart. Just don’t get in with red flags flying. That’s the safest way to avoid this situation.
