We should never take orcas for granted! Our crew got on camera orcas in the Arctic, managing to swim where they couldn't before, but now, without ice, they have easy access. The problem is that the local species, like the narwhal, have never had a predator before and now have a powerful one, and we have no idea what will happen with these species in this new scenario.
We should also never take Great whites for granted, Great whites are extremely rare to sight as numbers are low, they’re rare predators who must be respected
Nat Geo Wild never fails to deliver jaw-dropping content, and this episode is no exception. The intricate dynamics between Orcas and Great Whites are expertly explored, shedding light on the fascinating world beneath the waves. It's not just a documentary; it's a riveting journey into the heart of the ocean.
i appreciate the free video from NGW but stretching 15-minute real content into big-foot/monster hunting reality show with over-dramatized music is not my cup of tea. BBC is the real deal.
The ocean is a vicious place. I know, I live in Florida and have been out on the deep water many a time. I've had a jewfish (goliath grouper, colossal grouper, I don't know what the appropriate name is now), come up, and eat sharks that I was reeling in, right off my hook. It's actually happened to me several times. It's a fish eat fish world out there. A couple of times, I was reeling in a fish and had another fish come after it, miss, and jump right in my boat. It's wild.
As long as people keep overfishing and threatening orca prey species, I think we will continue seeing orca's adapting and hunting species not normally on their menu. We are seeing this up hear in Canada's west coast.
"Not normally on their menu" This is according only to human's modern knowledge. The study of orcas was not to the level of today in say 1400 AD, 500 BC. Studying ocean animals diet in detail is a modern obsession. Now that their are cameras everywhere, and the internet, and fast means of travel for humans to interact all over the world, this knowledge is becoming easily transferable.
It’d probably be the other way around if there was a case were sizes were more similar to make it an even playing field. The dolphin would be the one to make a plan, while the shark is pretty forward with a “punch to the mouth” (which would probably the equivalent to a bite on the fluke in this context). Thing is nature isn’t always an even playing field. Hence you have elephant-sized pack hunting dolphins who coordinate ambush attacks on a solo shark a quarter of their size.

@@GROBARIsaJUGA69it’s only rare as we are just now realizing they eat them. There are different orca species all with different appetites. One mainly eats shark and has done so for a very long time, including GW.
You can still call them that, while yes they are occasionally killed by them, great whites are still apex predators since in most areas where orcas and great whites overlap in range, they usually leave each other alone. For example, killer whales are frequent on the west coast and even share hunting grounds with great whites and there haven’t been any news of Orcas killing the sharks. Trophic levels are also defined by what the animal eats also. Because the great white’s diet is made up of marine animals it’s still considered an apex predator, not as high as the orca but still up there.
