Good luck Shaun. I’ve been following your journey for the past several years. I’m an anesthesiologist, with retirement in my view for next year. I vividly remember my first day of residency at LA County - USC in July 1988. I was scared AF, and to top it off I was on call that first day. I can look,back now and wonder how I got through those first few weeks. But miraculously, after a few weeks I was juggling a full service of patients and getting the work done. Hang in there. You’ll be fine. And you’ve picked the best specialty.
Drs Shaun and Deepal...I'm rooting for you both! You guys will have highs and lows...but it's part of the learning curve. Best of luck as always 🎉

Shaun, now your real world education starts. Let me offer this. 80 hour weeks can quickly become 100 hours per week. You must take care of yourself. I would encourage you to start to see a counselor regularly - just for personal growth. What you see and do every day can cause PTSD… docs/nurses, much like cops, they just learn to live and tolerate it. That doesn’t work… set a routine of personal growth… it will make you a better doc, and prevent burnout. Thanks for answering the call…

I'm an MS4 starting the application process and watching your videos are really motivating! I'm also looking forward to having more responsibility as a resident to play a bigger role in patient care, so it's cool to see you talk about that in your video. I think it will be really interesting to compare your med school videos to your residency vlogs as you work your way through TY year. Good luck with the rest of surgery block!
Best of luck on your application season! Youll do great. The new responsibility is scary but also very rewarding and is what we have been trained for. You'll find out soon enough!

Thank you for giving us such a realistic look into your first week of residency. I am in college now, but knowing what my future will look like as a med student and eventually a resident fills me with anticipation! It’s going to be a lot of hard work but you guys make it seem worth it.

Still sleep at night but there is a chance to be woken up! I also try to nap during the day haha

Nope :( there is no surgery residency program here so it’s only the TYs that rotation through

What the heck?? Is it normal for med students to have to be there this early? and when do you finish? Does it change when you're done with residency? I'm more than happy to be located in Germany...
It’s normal since we need to go see our patients before the attending. Plus surgeries start early so you need to round on all your current patients beforehand

We rotate through a lot of areas, then next year it’ll be primarily anesthesiology
