NOT EASY BEING GREEN? | Monochromatic Watercolor Study | Painting with Only One Color

  • I had such good results with my new Qor Watercolors, I decided to give my old White Nights another shot without the battle of mixing colors by doing a Monochrome study. I can definitely feel a difference in quality. this time I think my biggest struggle was with the paper, so I'm gonna be doing some research into better paper, what paper do you use?

    you should stretch your paper before hand! soak it in water and then when it's really wet, it'll expand so you staple it to a board & tape it down, when it dries it'll shrink a little bit be flat... then it won't buckle when you add more water later ! also when you paint to get rid of that streaky effect do brush in layers in one direction then turn 90 degrees and make more strokes :0 it's streaking because the pigment is uneven on your brush and the paper is buckling

      You don't need to stretch your paper, born into a family of artists and had a brush in my hands since day dot. :D All she needs to do is buy decent paper! 100% cotton would be a good start, it handles a LOT of water without buckling lol... I mean cansons is awful. You have to start with good foundations, that's what your paper is! Even cheap watercolours, those that look chalky, behave better on good paper. Which is why I always say to anyone who asks what should I spend the most on, I've always said the paper. Paints you can add a few colours each month. But if you're using crap paper, you'll get the worst results and will likely give up trying to learn. :D

    Some advice from a college art student: they always tell us to start with the lightest color first especially when you're doing the swatches in the beginning, it's easier to darken the color than to lighten it, and it wastes less watercolor! Still looked amazing though!! Loved it!!

    Something i learned in an aquarelle class to stop the paper from buckling is that you should wet the paper first (before taping) on both sides until it "sticks" to whatever surface you're working on, and then tape down the paper with a special tape that's made of paper but one of the sides has an adhesive that's activated by water (i think it's called something like butchers paper tape?). Then you can wait for the paper to dry or work wet on wet if you want Hope you see this bc this was really helpful for me when painting with watercolors!

    To help with your buckling issue it will be worth your time looking into stretching your paper before your paint on it. Plenty of tutorials on how to do so if you google it.
    Otherwise you should look into some heavier paper to work with, over 300 gsm usually works.

    • @SorrensSorrow

      Yes stretching your paper is one of those skills that is often overlooked in the youtube watercolor community. What we did at school this one time is drenching the paper with a sponge and only after that taping it to the table (actually, I think we stretched and stapled it to a frame, it’s been like, 20 years ago, so ... it’s a bit hazy) so that when it dries up, it stretched itself. I think we used heavy Steinbach paper.

    Heyheyhey! A good way to prep paper for watercolour is to stretch it so it reduces the buckling. Smooth over a light a wash of water with a damp sponge over your paper, soaking up any excess (you can just dip small sheets for about 15 seconds in water) and then flatten it gently using fingers or sponge in sweeping motions from the middle to the sides in all directions. Once it is smooth and has no bumpies, moisten some masking tape (Like the tiniest amouth) and tape the top 1 third on the paper 2 thirds on the board. Then do it to the other remaining sides ensuring all the bumpies remain out. Then leave it to dry. Perfect paper for no warping watercolouring!

    Instead of learning to stretch paper maybe just Invest in a block of watercolor paper for now... it costs more than a pad but it is worth it if you will be doing anything very wet. The edges are glued together so it doesnt buckle as much. Arches is everyone’s favorite but I like Fabriano so far. Really it makes a huge difference for me. You can find pretty good deals if you look, and you could use a smaller size if you want to start. Eventually try a tube of schmincke or daniel smith or m graham for the gradated washes, they work better imo. (Also on etsy you can purchase half pans of those three from people who prep them for you for like $6 each, a good way to try first if you don’t want to invest in a bunch of tubes.) You do a really good job at everything you try. I love watching you work!

Also, from what I've seen, putting down dark color and adding more and more water (no more pigment) is the best way to get a nice gradient... I'm a complete nube, but something to try :) I always enjoy your videos and how you explore and enjoy yourself. Thanks!

    I love your finished painting and I think you've chosen the right color to do this challamge. With a color like the lighter greens you dont have that variety in value.
    I think you should try some cotton paper with at least 300gsm. That wont buckle that much and normally can withstand much water pretty well. There are different brands with that and the opinions which one is best differ. I think it depends on your technique and for someone starting with watercolor its not a huge difference in brands.
    I like to buy my paper in big sheets (50 x 70 cm I I think) and cut them myself. One sheet is about 5€ so its much cheaper than a block and I can try out more.
    Hope that helps :)

  • @aldoink
    @aldoink 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Stretching the paper first would get rid of the buckling problem, but outside of that, you can get around a lot of issues just by using heavier paper.
    The thing that really helped me get the hang of watercolour painting was Mary Doodles' How to Art videos. Before I found her channel, I treated it like any other painting, and I made it more difficult than it needed to be - you kind of learn to make the water do the work for you

    As a person who does a lot of water color painting you did so good! Don’t be so hard on yourself! A tip is for wet on wet when you put the water on your paper don’t do a lot, do enough so you can see the paper is wet but not puddling and then add your colors. Get your brush wet to blend colors too. Also if you get a heat press you can press your painting afterwards and it’ll help with the rippling look they have.

    Great for your first time doing a watercolor monochromatic painting. Yes do again in a different color. Also splurge on good paper. The variations of color depth is what watercolorists love. Be sure to buy a good hot pressed watercolor paper. The lack of texture will give you smother results. Thanks for another fun and enlightening video!

      I found out how to prevent buckling almost entirely not matter what type of paper you use
      It's called stretching out the paper, because buckling is the paper stretching under all the water

  • @heatherbretsch8438
    @heatherbretsch8438 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    That looks really good Rin! My biggest recommendation is to learn which brush size to use. If you're blocking in a big section of color, use a large flat brush. If you're doing fine detail, use a fine brush. Getting midtones can be hard, but it's all about water control. If a color turns out too dark, add some plain water to the brush and run it over the dark area. Water will act like an eraser so it should lift up some of the water.
    Overall, I think this is really nice! Thanks for the video! I love this kind of stuff where we get to hear your thoughts as you work on your piece.
    PS. Use a hair dryer to dry the paper between layers. Also use it on the tape to release the adhesive on the tape. It will come up much smoother and not rip the paper.

    Love your videos Waffles you always make me smile 😊
    Can i offer some tips on some of the things you were struggling with? Hopefully they'll be helpful.
    Definitely better paper, something like Arches medium texture 300gsm it's hard to get the effects you want when you have to fight your materials. A bigger brush for bigger areas, something like a round or a mop would be best. And to help with the smooth gradient, taping your paper to a board so you can tilt it will help. When you tilt the paper the watercolour will pool a bit to the bottom where you've applied the colour and wet-into-wet blending is how you can make it smooth (when your not fighting paper buckling 😂) oh and I keep a hair dryer close when I paint with watercolour to help speed the drying along. I hope this is helpful. You're such an inspiration to me and so many here, can't wait to see your next video 😊

    I use that paper a lot and it'll buckle but I actually enjoy the paper for a cheap paper but a good artist quality budget paper is the 25%cotton fabriono... I never usually have a problem with gradients on the paper... not to say I never did it was one of the harder things to learn but you gotta make a stroke leave a puddle all across bottom of the stroke make another stroke you just always gotta make sure the bottom stays wet...
