I applaud you for , when you pause, you GO BACK five or so seconds when you re-start the song. You might be surprised at how many reactors DON'T do that! It's a loss for them, because they often miss out on a great bridge or transition or interrupt the flow of the song that , if they had gone back five seconds, they would not have lost. It's annoying for those of us watching (me., at least, lol!) because we know they just missed a really cool part or whatever. Glad you do it, and love your reactions in general!

In 1971 (or 72), Robert was voted top male singer in Britain, and Sandy voted top female singer. They were good pals.

I’ve since bought all of her solo albums and those by her band fairport connection. It’s very nice to see younger folks appreciating this music and asking the same questions so many years later.

This is not only. unique, but also align with what Led Zeppelin wished. If not mistaken, they were never happy to release the song as singles and were only forced to because of the recording label. They said that the songs were intended to be experienced as an album.

Black Dog's riff was created by bassist John Paul Jones. The entire song is rough and raw. Rock and Roll took a bit of inspiration from Little Richard's song "Keep A' Knockin'". Bonzo was having difficulty getting the drumming right for their song called Four Sticks, so, in exasperation, he started beating out what would become this song. The lyrics are full of late 50s song references and the boogie woogie style piano is played by former Rolling Stones band member Ian Stewart. Battle of Evermore has Sandy Denny (RIP) from the group Fairport Convention sing with Robert. Jimmy played a mandolin while John Paul Jones played a 12-string guitar, I believe. It's a wonderful, ethereal sounding song full of fantasy and lore. Stairway is a masterpiece. It crystalized what the band was at that point; it had slow/fast, hard/soft, drama, musicality, mystical elements. It pours out emotion and the listener feels wrung out, dazed, in awe. This is a masterful album

Helene here. YES! There IS “something” about Robert’s voice. It’s damn sexy, for one thing. 😁. And the power…..and even now, at 74, when he no longer has that range and power, his voice is still so expressive, tender and lively. Saw him in August with Alison Krauss…..they are great together. But yeah, young Plant’s voice was otherworldly. There are “better” voices in rock….but none with that charisma (except Freddie Mercury).

    • @craenor

Allison Krauss is an underrated musician. Don't get me wrong. Anyone who knows country, blue grass, or the like, knows Allison Krauss. But in plenty of music circles she's not well known, and that's a shame. She's one of the only people I'd actually describe as having the voice of an angel.
Everyone who loved the acapella version of Down to the River to Pray from O' Brother, Where Art Thou loves Allison Krauss's voice, they just might not have known it.
But yeah, her and Robert Plant together are magical.

@@helenespaulding7562 oh I agree. I don't think someone having a nice voice makes that voice 'angelic' in any way. But Alison Krauss is one of the few female singers who naturally sings in a very high register, that I still find soothing.
I have some slight nerve damage, and high pitched voices often grate on my ears. For whatever reason though, that's never been the case with Alison Krauss. Some quality of her voice is still soothing to me despite the high notes she's hitting.

I was 12 when I first heard this album. I hadn't heard any Zeppelin prior to that. My exposure to "Pop Music" consisted of "The Monkeys" and "Partridge Family" Up to that point. I was with my parents and visiting some friends of theirs in Boulder Colorado. They had a daughter who was about 15 and she played me this album... I was actually frightened by it to some extent. It had such an "otherworldly" quality to it that I can't adequately describe. By the time I was 15 I was a massive fan. Bought "Houses of the Holy" and "Physical Graffiti" the days that they came out.

It's amazing to see you as a youngster (with all respect) appreciate the music of my youth. I was a musically aware child of the early/mid 1970's through the mid 1980's and it's wonderful that you appreciate this incredible music/musicianship that was a huge part of my life growing up in America during those times.
Keep it up darling! There's so much more to explore such as Southern Rock (Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Sknyryd, Molly Hatchet, .38 Special, and the Outlaws etc.) and progressive rock such as Yes, Rush (my personal fave), and Kansas to the Godfather's of metal Black Sabbath with a shout out to neo-classical Deep Purple. Check them out. They were ground-breakers back in the day with real musicianship.

When you are done with your Zep journey, I think it would be cool if you ranked the albums and why. You haven't reached my favorite Zepp album yet. Many of us think Physical Graffiti is them at their height. Can't wait till you get to it. Oh, the Battle of Evermore. Catch the Lord of the Rings references? At least 4 of their songs had Lord of the Rings themes. And it's two voices in this song. Forgot her name but the other voice was a woman.
Oh, are you going to do the live concert "The Song Remains the Same?" It might be one of the most famous live concerts in rock history. It dosn't exactly fit into the album format you do but even if you just watch it on your own I think you would enjoy it. By the way, this concert opens up with "Rock N Roll."

I will say that a confluence of events took place that made that area of Britain a hotbed of musical creativity. The area was urban, so there was close proximity to other musicans. But, those musicians all grew up being influenced by American early rock (taboo).
It was exciting and anything taboo, often becomes a teenage rebel obsession. Page, Clapton, Beck, Richards, Townsend, among several others, weren't exactly rich, so they spent hours in record shops trading albums, and as they learned the guitar, they traded riffs, but they also became RIVALS, and male competition took over. That was in the water.

Verdy, enjoy your reactions. Just a bit of an observation. You might want to watch your creations after your finished before posting. In this one the music must be 2 to 3 times the volume level of your comments. That kind makes it hard to watch when you get a good volume for the music and then you pause and we cannot hear your comments. My guess is you're using just the mic on the computer. Many times people actually have a mic they can adjust closer, to get more vocal input signal to help equalize this. If you don't have a mic then you could always adjust in editing by just bringing up your comment part to be at the same level on the meter as the music.

Classic! "Rock and Roll" is a fun song to play. It was one of the first LZ songs I ever learned how to play way back when. Led Zeppelin gave Welsh songstress Sandy Denny her own rune on the liner notes to the album for her part on "The Battle of Evermore". She was the only other singer to ever appear on a Led Zeppelin album. Her voice is wonderful. Her work with Fairport Convention is quite masterful. For a taste, check out "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?", "Farewell, Farewell", "The Ballad Of Easy Rider", and "She Moves Through The Fair" among others. The lyrics of "The Battle of Evermore" allude The Lord of the Rings -- "The ring wraiths ride in black, ride on" -- then Sandy Denny sings -- "Sing as you raise your bow \ Shoot straighter than before \ Oh dance in the dark of night \ Sing to the morning light" ...
