    When the Levee Breaks has, for 50 years, been one of my all time favorite rock tracks. It is absolutely hypnotic to me and I lose myself completely in that relentless rhythm. This is one of the most famous drum riffs in history…as you might imagine. Sampled a ton by hip-hop and rap. That sound of the drums is a mixture of Bonzo’s skill, the natural echo effect and ambience of the high ceiling in the entryway of Hedley Grange, where they recorded much of this album, and the expertise of Jimmy and their sound engineer in placing mics at a great distance from the drums…up on the landing. Zeppelin never played it live because they could not recreate that sound of the drums on stage with the technology at that time.

      For some people, it's Moby Dick. For some, it's Bonzo's Montreaux (you'll get to 'em, Verdy). For me, it's always been When The Levee Breaks. The drums sound so... simple... at first. But you quickly realize every single beat is absolutely perfect. Perfect in timing, tone, musicality, recording, it is abundantly clear that what's on the album is _exactly_ what Bonham wanted you to hear. Not a whit extra, not a lick missing. The song is an absolute masterclass in drumming. And then there's the guitar...

    Again, guitar and mandolin on Going to California. Robert fell in love with the hippie counter-culture in California in the late 60’s. This is kind of a “love song” to the California of that time……”a girl with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair”. It is also pays tribute to the singer song-writer style of the time….especially the folk “queen” Joni Mitchell. “They say she plays guitar, cries and sings”. This song was often done as part of a short acoustic section of their concerts.

    Hello Verdy, this album is in the Olympus of rock, and consolidates the Zeppelin sound, we can listen to Rock and Roll and recognize a song in the style of Chuck Berry or Little Richard but with the heavy stamp of Zeppelin, especially thanks to John's Bohnan drums... the guy had an unparalleled style. Thanks to that heavy drums, other styles could be explored without losing Zeppelin's characteristic sound, songs like The Crunge (funk), D'yer Mak'er (reggae) or Kashmir (oriental sound) all explore sounds other than hard rock but that end with a characteristic touch of this great band.
    Thanks for your reaction.😎

I have heard it countless times, and every time I hear it, the love and wonder hits me all over again. Loved your reaction. With Levee, that’s Robert on harmonica, or blues harp if you will, with the reverb reversed giving it a really haunting, menacing feeling. Pure genius. JPJ said the song created a real mood. He also said of the album as a whole that this was the one; after this no one compared us to Black Sabbath anymore.

    The last track Levee Breaks is my favorite of all their stuff - the opening drum intro is legendary. Bonham had a new kit delivered to Hedley Grange where they were recording. The tech set up the kit in the entry hall (as explained by Jimmy in "it might get loud" documentary) which had a large stairwell and gave the drums that huge sound. Another note for you Verdy is that "Going to California" is said to be about Joni Mitchell from the lines "Someone told me there's a girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair" and "They say she plays guitar and cries and sings, la-la-la-la". You should hear Joni's song California live - it's angelic to say the least.

    John Paul Jones is so underrated it is criminal. This man just anchors the rhythm section like no other. I am a huge Geddy Lee and Chris Squire fan for their "lead" elements, but JPJ just crushes the groove and complements Bonham in a way few other bassists can complement a drummer.

    • @graymouser6599
      @graymouser6599 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, this is a great point. Geddy is still the man IMHO. My issue with Squire has always been that he is fantastic, but he plays the bass like a guitarist, not like a bassist. JPJ in contrast plays the instrument like a bassist, and I agree he is criminally underrated.

      @@johnr.8275 - Obviously Chris Squire was heavily influenced by Entwistle's style. I'm not sure I'd say he's "hands down" the best, but he is certainly in the pantheon of the best. I saw LZ during their one and only Australian tour in 1972. It was soon after this album was released. The concert lasted three hours and the songs from this album were Black Dog, Rock and Roll, Stairway to Heaven and Going to California (as part of a four song acoustic section, the others from LZ III). Nothing like them live as every concert was different. We heard part of The Rover which was three years away from being on an album. It was among a long medley of old rock and roll songs and it was not until the 1975 Physical Graffiti album that we had a name for it.

    7:24 The song is called "Four Sticks" because John Bonham is using 4 drum sticks. Two in each hand. He came up with the beat using four sticks and the rest of the band built the song around that beat.

    Your reaction tells me that it really was good as we thought it was in the 70s. This was Zeppelin's masterpiece. It didn't get any better than this in the 70s. Jimmy's decision to only put the harmonica in the left channel for When The Levee Breaks really made it jump out.

    GOING TO CALIFORNIA was written when they were all crushing on Joni Mitchell, who was living in Laurel Canyon (amongst a musical community). I love JPJ's introduction of a mandolin to this song. This is for you, Verdy:

    “Four Sticks” was actually Bonzo playing with four sticks. He was getting frustrated because he couldn’t quite get what he wanted and went in to a Little Richard drum intro which they developed into “Rock and Roll”

    • @johnr.8275
      @johnr.8275 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly right. Good info, Anita! Page said Bonham physically couldn't do more than a few takes of Four Sticks because it was so grueling. And that's very telling about a guy who had the stamina to pound on the drums solo for upwards of a half-hour every night on tour! Four Sticks is criminally underrated in the Zeppelin catalogue.

      @@anitapaulus937 I agree on all points. The two sticks in each hand that are clicking together throughout the song add an extra rhythmic dimension. Bonzo was one of a kind, and he is far and away my favorite drummer and biggest influence.

    "Four Sticks" is one of the most underappreciated tunes of all time. It shows how Plant and Bonham fit together like peanut butter and chocolate, the multi-instermental genius of Jones and vocal mastery of Plant all in one song. Not unlike another song that doesn't get it's due, "Achilles Last Stand".

    Hi Verdy, What a CLASSIC Album.... We clearly both have a penchant for a synchronous Bass & Guitar or Stereo Guitar riff. It's so evident You love their synchronised bass & guitar or voice in 'Misty Mountain Hop' as much as I did (and still do), so intrinsically Zeppelin. Then 'Four Sticks' what a unique song that is almost tribal rhythm wise and with that haunting Synth and his amazing vouce. Then the calm Folky 'Going to California' what an unexpected contrast. Then closing with the epic drum/harmonica driven 'When the Levee (Dam) Breaks', You are going to just love 'Houses of the Holy' ☺️

    The sound 'on the left' at the beginning and in the musical breaks in When The Levee Breaks is a distorted harmonica, not a guitar.

    make comments. Worse is pause during solos. But LOVE your format of whole album sides! Yes LZ
