Hey Travis. Glad to see your back is doing better and you’re able to do more in the garden. I’ve been a big fan of fish emulsion and have used it for years. Put the water right on the trays somehow. I had a pretty good system rigged up but too much water sprayed on the plastic and the funky water I have stained the crap out of it. I just bought new plastic and have been looking at the netafim sprinklers the last couple of days also.
It's gonna take some "figuring," but I think we can design something that will work well.
Glad to see you are able to push the wheel hoe, signs of recovery. Nice. Like the plans for the green house and the electric and water. Auto sprinklers will make it really nice.

That would require some patience that I unfortunately don't have. lol
Thumbs up on the Iron Clay Pea/ Pumpkin plot. Likely to work as you imagine, but even if it doesn't at least you've tried out a new idea. There're some excellent soilless seed starting mixes in the market now. Sunshine #4, ProMix, Roots Organic, Fox Farm and others. I avoid the Miracle-Gro types personally. I'm a vermiculite fan for top coat on the cells. Seems to lay down a little better and still prevents damping off. Freight can be a bigger expense than the product cost in many cases when dealing with the quality vendors like Agrothrive and Seven Springs.
Freight can definitely be an issue on some of this stuff. I just have to convince myself that I'm saving a ton of time as opposed to trying to drive and find something.

Could you explain a little bit more about the benefit to have top layer of perlite for the germination process? Thank you
Some folks use it to mitigate fungus gnats, but we don't have a ton of issues with those. For us, it keeps an algal layer crust from forming on top of the seed starting mix, making it easier for seedlings to emerge. It also provides aeration to the seed so it doesn't stay too wet.

One trick I like to do with tiny seeds is to lay a bit of tissue down in each cell, that way I can tell which cell I have done once I've put the seed in.

I have learned that I can buy a bag of jumbo cotton balls and pinch off a piece big enough to cover the drain hole in your seed starter tray and maybe come up the side a little ways this will save a little starter mix and if you can not monitor your seedlings as well as you should you can bottom water and it will wick much better.

So Brooklyn found that release from the doctor, with no restrictions, dated August 1st. and put your tail back to work! :) All kidding aside, glad you're feeling better and able to get back to what you love! Silicone washers for your hoses will be a huge plus! Run some water over that greenhouse if it heats up too bad. It's good short term relief. I'm curious to see if the peas just take over that patch with the pumpkins. Hope not. Be a great cover crop, for sure!
Either way, we've got the ground covered. If the pumpkins don't make it, we've at least done one thing right.

3) A few years ago, some friends were moving back East. They had a cement mixer that didn’t sell and it was too big to take with them. They gave it to us. It works great for mixing our own potting soil - compost, aged cow manure, worm castings, sand, etc. - and if I’m starting tomato seeds, add in some ground up (and baked) eggshells to prevent blossom end rot from calcium deficiency.

Never used iron clay peas but my pumpkins will out compete just about anything…even grasses and some other weeds…best way to grow pumpkins by far is growing rye the previous winter and rolling the rye down with a yard roller or just a board and your foot and planting the pumpkins into the mat of rye…keeps soil temps down, conserves soil moisture, keeps disease pressure down because rain isnt splashing dirt in the leaves, and gives the pumpkins a nice place to sit instead of sitting in the dirt so the fruits look better

Hi Travis. Good to see your back is heeling up and you're able to wheel hoe again. My wife uses a Dial Seed Sower for those smaller seeds. You can get them on Amazon. I've used it for planting rows of carrots and it seems to work pretty well as you can adjust for the size of seed. Thanks for sharing all of the product information in this video.

No need to thin the snapdragons. They grow well in bunches or clumps. They bloom all season long and are prolific self seeders. You only have to plant them once!! One of my all time low maintenance flowers.

Great idea on the green house plastic. We put a pea gravel floor in our green house. I like it.
The guy that installed my greenhouse mentioned that the pea gravel is a good way to provide some additional cooling in there.
I think the intercropping of the peas with the pumpkins is a cool idea! By pushing the pumpkins like that, I feel like they should overtake the peas and BOOM you've got some free nitrogen there with less weed pressure early on. Seems like that could be a cool way to incorporate a "living mulch" and feed the soil microbes while the wide spaced vining crops are filling out. I really enjoy your channel and appreciate you trying experiments like this, especially in the same zone 8, southern climate that I'm in. I'm "studying up" in preparation for starting a homestead in the future. I really think your growing style/techniques make the most sense for us down here that really want to grow and put up some real food to live off of, not just piddle with a few raised beds haha. This is my second year using agrothrive and have been amazed at the results.

I started my Chinese Broccoli seed in a pot out in direct sun. Days were 100F+ and nights barely made it into the upper 60s. Just made sure they were kept moist. Both varieties sprouted. After 3 weeks, I started transplanting some of them into the raised bed. Already had a worm chew off one of the transplants - that worm is now fertilizer. Glad to see you can run that wheel hoe. Great info on the fertilizer. No idea about the cover crop.

Travis, great to see you starting to get back into the swing of normal life and feeling better! FYI the "10x20" Proptek flats are not standard 10x20" size (10.6" x 21.1"). The a just a little larger. I bought some of the 144 cell ones this year from Greenhouse Megastore and ended up using the Garland XL trays (no holes) for bottom watering. They do have the Garland XL trays with holes as I know you like to use that type. I also bought the XL high top domes which fit this combo just fine. FYI, I only wanted 3 sets, but it was so much less expensive and with free shipping it just made sense to buy them in a set of 10 each for the Proptek flats and Garland trays. The 144 cell flats are $19 each in single quantity or $75 for the 10 pack ($7.50 each). So check the quantity price if you are ordering a couple, as you might save money by buying more. Oh, you can also put two of the Proptek 10x20 flats in the Garland square trays. They may also fit the standard Garland trays, but I went with the XL just to be sure. It's easy to hit the "free shipping on $99 and up" if you plan your purchases. And yes, I have the Hoss 168 cell flats/trays also! I'm trying silicone water hose washers. So far they are working well and should not get hard and crack like the rubber ones. Got mine off Amazon. One more tip - get a 18v portable fan that will work with whatever battery platform you have for cordless tools. Most of my stuff is Makita, but I have the Ryobi 18v fan and it works great in the garage or even when working in the garden. It would help move some air when you are in the greenhouse and Ryobi is inexpensive (plus that model will also take an extension cord to run off either AC or the battery). Ok, I'm done....
I have some Ryobi stuff already so may need to invest in one of those fans. I was reading some reviews on those Proptek 10x20 trays last night and saw that about the unique size.

Last week working outside I looked like I'd been sprayed with the hose. This week I think I noticed that change in the air that says the seasons changing. I planted winter squash, martin gourds, and cantaloupe on the edges to grow out into the woods. They grow up stumps and bushes even took over a utility trailer. They spread out over many times the area they were planted in. Very aggressive and fast. I'll weed eat but that mainly helps me get around. They do better outside where they were planted together. Even put down cardboard to keep down the weeds where they were planted they avoid it and head for the woods. Not to say they like weeds just don't like being crowded with each other. But it was a really wet summer. They really like tearing across the grass too. Know you're happy to get the saddle off your back.
I'm waiting on that change in the air here. It usually coincides with the beginning of the football season.

Me and the wife have got some seed trays trying to germinate them in the house because it's been so hot and then move them to the greenhouse to harden off. That's a good idea if the greenhouse conditions cause the seed starting mix to be too warm for germination of some crops.
@@LazyDogFarm we are trying to get our fall plants going so that come late September they should be big enough for a good transplant. Sure has been tough getting them going. Got a light going an a somewhat good window for them to sit by.

i've been planting two seeds (veggies) per cell but should be planting one per cell. with high germination rate always having to thin every cell.
Nothing wrong with planting more to ensure you get a full tray.

Those things can destroy a crop in no time!
Part of me wonders if the peas will draw deer into your pumpkins but I suppose that if you had deer pressure you would have already fenced the gardens anyway.
We're surrounded by massive cotton and peanut fields, so the deer don't get close to our gardens. They stay near the woods.

may be a problem running waterlines up near the roof of a small green house , it may make the first shot of water boiling hot and burn the young plants , may need to put some type of relief to drain on shut down . just a taught , what do you think? Im building me a small green house in future and would like to know your taughts on that one.
With the hanging rails, I think the water lines would be at least a foot or so from the plastic, which I think would be okay. We'll have to see.

If he does want to catch the extra soil and perlite, I've found either the black cement mixing trays ot the the trays that go under dog or rabbit cages/kennels/crates are great for catching the extra starting soil/perlite. Since they are plastic, they are lightweight, washable, come in various sizes, heavy duty and stack, so I can have several to swap out or leave out during seed starting times and empty them back in the bag when I feel like it or they get full. I get them at hardware stores, online, yard sales, etc Just an idea that might be helpful....

I've had really bad luck with it, but I think it will work. Every time I've tried it, I've gotten floods and the seed potatoes rot.

Hi Travis. I grew glass gem corn too this year (in Delaware) and didn't have any issues with the leaves like on your plants but every year I do have problems with raccoons trashing my corn at harvest time. Wondering if you ever have problems with raccoons/deer getting in you corn plots?
I have raccoons get in my sweet corn. This sounds stupid but I run a couple old vacuum cleans all night from evening to morning in the little plot that's ready. Works great!
We don't have deer or raccoon issues. That pine tree patch behind the garden is pretty small, although it may look big on camera. It holds a few rabbits, but that's about it.
Thought you had to let okra dry on stalk to get viable seeds?
Some of these were close to being dry, but they wouldn't ever get completely dry on the stalk -- maybe because of the humidity? Either way, they had been on the stalk a long time and had quit growing.

I used some stuff I got from Lowe's called "fruit tree spray." I've never used it in the past, but it had a fungicide and insecticide in it and figured I'd give it a try.

Not sure. A viewer sent us some rhubarb seeds, but I believe the variety is Victoria. I've never grown it, so don't know much about it.
I've tried using your technique with the perlite this year. I'm getting decent germination but some of my seeds are growing through, sticking to the perlite, and then looking leggy. Its like they arent gripping enough soil. What am I doing wrong? TIA!
If they're getting leggy, that's more likely a result of the lighting being too high (assuming you're growing indoors). If not, I'm not sure why that could be happening.

Also while im question asking. Growing up we did single rows of corn spaced a tiller width apart ao maybe 18"? I think my dad threw out some chemical fertilizer (it was the 90s) once or maybe twice.
Why do you plant it 3 ft apart?
Is it poorer soil? We had the nice Midwestern deep loamy soils.

As far as the corn goes, I've tried planting corn on 2' spacing in the past. I got very poor pollination, and my only guess was that it was due to the plant foliage being so thick that the pollen couldn't get to silks. The plants looked nice and healthy that year, but the ears weren't full at all.

that's crazy! We definitely planted it a lot thicker gernerally grew varieties like silver queen, id guess peaches & cream since it was probably a popular bi color then but i dont ever remember straight yellow corn.
You have me courageous enough to try to stick some seeds in the ground now. I know peas, greens & roots will be fine. But im going to try some cabbage, squash & cucumber see how far i get with them before a frost bites them! Our last frost is oct 15, but can go later before it really gets cold depends on the weather pattern this fall!

I can't remember the brand name, but it was called "fruit tree spray" or something like that I got from Lowe's when I bought some Liquid Sevin a while back. It's supposed to be a fungicide and insecticide in one. I've never used it, but figured I'd give it a shot since that corn was looking so rough.

Yeah it's going to be an interesting race to see which one outpaces the other. Maybe the extra thick planting will keep them a little shorter.

Trying to get away from the salt-based fertilizers because they can leave the soil in fairly pitiful shape once the corn is done.

Probably only needs tightening and maybe a new gasket between hose and sprayer union. Those Dramm unions always loosen...garbage!
It doesn't leak if the water is on and the hose is kinked and pressurized before I connect it. But if connect it and then turn the water on, it spews. Guess the pressure helps make it seal.

I tried your suggestion using the alganic nitrogen and the other nitrogen that you told me for growing sweet corn. None of it worked even though I did it how you said to. However, I live in zone 10a. That nasty humidity you were talking about at the beginning of the video is what we have all the time. I am now thinking my weather is not conducive for corn growing. My corn always dies of humidity death. Could that be? This fertilizer you’re talking about now is not what you told me before to use when you were with your Dad. I do want corn, nobody around here sells organic and it’s mainly a gmo crop so I’m relying on me. Should I call it quits or maybe try it in the colder months, which there really are none here?
Down there your planting schedule might be much different than ours. I would image you could even grow corn during the winter months. Might want to try that.
