I’ve been using one of those old plastic ketchup bottles with the pointy tip for applying fertilizer to my seed trays. Works perfect. You can direct the stream exactly where you want it.
That's a good idea. Our boys go through ketchup like crazy, so we'd have plenty of those to save!
There is a recipe to suspend expensive and/or tiny seeds hard to sow seeds in a thin gelatin mix/slurry (plain, unflavored, like Knox) to direct seed them using a clear plastic bottle with a clear tip. Just squeeze out the suspended seeds while watching the tip.
A bit tedious, but once you get the hang of it you don't need to thin much at all. The gelatin affords a tiny bit of seed protection too until it washes away.
This woman used cornstarch & a plastic zip lock bag to squirt in pre-sprouted carrot seed.

I've done it, but switched to dropping seed via a tube attached to a doll rod because of my aching back. A bit edious in a different way, but less bending over.
Ill put in my request now. Would really like to see Brooklyn give some cooking tips on what to do with mustards. I found them to be super bitter and have to say turnip greens pretty much the same. Collards I’m okay with. More great content as always!
Bitterness can sometimes be a result of plant stress. But I'd suggest trying the Savanna mustard. It has a superior taste in my opinion.

I enjoyed that. I have been fertilizing my seedlings with Schultz Water for decades, 7 drops per quart or litre, it works well for me. I use it for my micro greens now too. You southerners are so sensible to eat all those greens, we have been incorporating them more into our diet, we really love the Savanah Mustard Greens, I grow enough to freeze and last us all year. Your planting technique sure is fast! I had to chuckle to myself as you complained about how hard it is for you to grow Brussels sprouts in your climate while you were overlooking your beautiful fig orchard!

I'm in zone 8 b about 100 miles east of you, I started my cabbage cauliflower broccoli brussel sprouts rutabagas kohlrabi leeks and kale and three different kinds of onions 8/3/21 then 8/18/21 I got covid and when I was able to get back to the greenhouse the little worms have stripped most of the brassica well it's never to late to start again , another good show I'm 72 and still learning

I've been waking up to 50's the past few mornings. A shock to the system after all the heat. Feels good. Fall garden planted and now I have to start working the flower garden, transplanting, moving some perinneals, digging up the aggressive spreaders. Lots of work to do now that its cooling off.
Sure feels good to be outside and not have a drenched shirt!
I grew the Portuguese kale last year and it really does look like a collard. It’s makes a really good Portuguese kale soup. 🥬

I also use a plastic ketchup bottle to feed my seedlings works great I've been trying to use the perlite on top that it always seems to turn green on me using humidity domes over my trays don't have a greenhouse that seems to help things germinate faster but I always end up getting green algae on top when I use that perlite technique

Oh, I so want a greenhouse! I'll have to find a way or make a way. Anyway, I did get some of my Fall brassicas started, and plan to start more this weekend.
Sounds like you're on the ball with your seed starting! I feel a little behind.
Cattle panel "greenhouse" is the easiest/cheapest way to DIY. Not a "true" greenhouse, but will extend the season for you. There are about 1M TH-cam vids on how to make one. Some are better than others. You may have to watch about a dozen to see which DIY plan is affordable & best for you.
Note- Always use UV treated plastic for covering...as thick as you can afford.
I chose a design with a pallet wood knee wall to get additional height/headroom. Installed two automatic window vents (needed no elec, works with wax filled cylinders to open/ close) front & back for cross breeze to prevent over-heating. Eventually added a DC fan with thermostat run by small solar panel to suck air through. Those additions made it more useful.
Second version was much improved with only minor tweaks. You learn as you go & grow.
Also, NEVER use solid black plastic as a floor. Use black landscape fabric. That structure needs to breath. Solid black plastic encourages mold, mildew, bad fungal build up. Cheapest route is to heavily cardboard interior floor & put down woodchips to block grass/weed growth.
I just about always grow Georgia collards. They do good for me in SC . This year I’m growing Georgia and Morris . My transplants are up but not ready to transplant yet . Looking forward to fresh collards . Good luck with yours .
I haven't tried either of those, but might need to do so just to compare them to the varieties I have grown.
I'm grateful that you're putting out the good videos almost end on end. Many of us short season folks will be gardening through you and Brooklyn until next Spring when we can roll out our own seed flats. Rutabaga greens? You are truly a child of the South. Ya'll have fire ants and pea curculio and feral hogs and the occasional hurricane but at least you can grow a crop of something good to eat year round.

I'd start with a tablespoon or so per gallon of water.
Back must be feeling pretty good as fast as you are swinging that weed eater 🤣 Glad to see you planting the vegetables now. I am having a hard time with leggy sprouts. May not have had enough light when we germinated them in the house. We put them out in the greenhouse and we are keeping our fingers crossed.
Leggy transplants almost always are a result of the light being too high. Hopefully you can still extract them from the trays safely and they'll do fine once you get them in the ground.
If you figure out how to successfully grow Brussel Sprouts in the South you could sell the technique. Good video. Thanks!
We've done pretty well with them the last couple years. Gotta have transplants ready to go in the ground in late September or early October, then hope for a couple good cold spells to trigger sprout production.
My greenhouse is some distance from the spigot too. I found that a watering can is excellent for fertilizing seedlings.
Just got a quote on getting a water line ran to the greenhouse yesterday. That should make things much easier for us.
@@LazyDogFarm and I'm preparing to dig a trench to start laying pipe for mine. It'll be nice to have an overhead wand connected to the siphon to ease things up.
Travis, one thing that works great as a fast feed for seedlings is to Foliar feed with - Insect Frass 2-2-2. It works great and I use it all season long as a foliar, in fact I just ordered a 25 lb. bag. Amazon

I have a similar problem but I put the injector between the hose and the sprayer with my fertilizer in a milk jug it works fine.

This will be my 4th year growing Brussels sprouts & I have yet to get an actual harvest of them. I’m in hot springs, AR. I got a few last year but they weren’t tight. They were real loose. Maybe this year will be the year.
They are frustrating, but we always give them at least one row in the fall/winter garden just to see what happens.
This will be my first year growing broccoli I'm going in a different direction. Article someone passed to me said we might want to get away from the grocery store type thinking if we are growing for ourselves. I like the way that sounds right off. Anyway the Italian type grows in the same weather as we do in the South. It doesn't put everything into one head but dozens for months. Takes some of the stress off I guess. Big heads are always too much at one time. I feel safer doing it the first time too. Calabrese is what I'm trying. Could be a right turn could be a wrong turn.

Sunshine number 4 mix comes with bacteria and fungi in it on purpose…look on the packaging…that’s part of the reason it works so good

Another informative video. Your flower seedlings are looking great. Two questions. Do you plant directly into the garden from those trays, or do you transplant into larger pots first? You mentioned you planted a hybrid variety of Costata Romanesco. Do you remember the name of it? I see Johnny's has one.

Hey Travis - as usual another awesome video. Wanted to know if you’ve ever experimented with soil blocks in starting seeds? I’ve used it for tomatoes and peppers with great success, and plan to try it with flowers and other veggies next Spring. Greenhouse is looking great and I know you are enjoying it. Keep the great content coming!!
I have tried soil blocks one time. I didn't like it because it was so much more time consuming than using trays. I also tested the theory that soil blocks had less transplant shock as opposed to plugs -- and didn't find any differences. I know plenty of folks who love soil blocking and if you enjoy it, go for it. I'm just too impatient for it.
They are definitely a LOT more time consuming. I go back and forth on them. One year I’ll use them and the next I’ll go a different route. I was impressed with how healthy and stout the roots get in soil blocking. I’ve never tried the vermiculite method with seed starting but plan to give it a go this year.
Would you be able to put your seed varieties in the notes of this video? I’d like to try some but it’s hard to know how to spell some of the mor unusual names. Always appreciate your videos! I learn a lot and like how you teach

Just got my seeds started as well. But have them in the house because it’s still 95-100 degrees everyday. I’m wanting to get one of them siphoning fertilizers. Question? Help me understand why it will not work on a long hose because that’s my only option. Gpm is the same at the end of hose as it is at the faucet. I can see maybe loosing a tiny bit of psi but enough to make a difference. Seems no different than running a hard line. May take a few seconds to get the air out and equalize. Especially if it’s only 25 feet. I run up to 300 feet of water hose some times and it equals out in a few seconds.
Good question. I don't really know why it doesn't work, but I know from experience that it doesn't. In my former career, we would get quite a few complaints from customers who didn't read the fine print and wondered why it wasn't working.

Do you know if it is possible/ recommended to bottom water trays with that fertilizer mixed at 50% strength (2oz/gal)? I don't have a greenhouse, just an indoor setup and I bottom water my seedlings but they are looking like they are ready for fertilizer. Let me know, thanks.
You can do that. I just wouldn't leave the mixture sitting in the bottom of the tray for too long as it might start to smell a little.
Yes indeed gourd seeds take A LONG TIME to germinate so don't give up on them, I thought that same thing of having bad seeds and a few weeks later they came through and grew good.....Some folks clip the ears on the seeds to help them germinate faster and place them between wet paper towels which works great.....
Haven't heard of clipping the ears of the seeds, but I need to try that!

I have started English Peas (sweet peas) in trays and that works well. I've never tried doing green beans, but don't why it wouldn't work.

I cut the music a year or so ago to speed up my editing time. Just one of those things that I've had to eliminate over time to make things more efficient so we can continue doing 3 vids a week.

Right now it sunrise is around 7:00am and sunset is around 8:00, so about 11 hours.

Those have to be old seeds. The breeder discontinued that variety a year or two ago, so no more have been produced.

If I were using bottom trays, yes. I recently ordered some bottom trays and we may end up doing it that way.

My gourd seeds took forever to germinate I almost gave up on them.
We just replanted. It might freeze before they germinate though. lol
Why do you top with perlite, my starter has perlite in it?
it helps with aeration, faster germination, the seeds don't get waterlogged - they stay in a nice moist environment, but not too wet.
Covering them also helps them from getting an algal crust build-up on
top of the soil

I am a in ground gardener. I do have three nice raised beds, but I prefer in ground. Those bottles have a fine spray & that jet you got.
Turn it to were it doesnt spray at all then go a quarter turn to spray it should be a fine mist.
The fine mist area is pretty narrow on those bottles.
You just turned it too much to get the spray....
You should try dazzling blue kale. It has an electric blue/purple vein instead of white.
And you can eat sweet potato leaves. I guess they are kinda like spinach. But ive heard you stick to the newest ones to eat lol

Hey Travis, luv your videos. Been a fan for a couple yrs now. I need a little help. I’m looking to buy some F1 hybrids and would appreciate some suggestions on where to purchase them? I’m thinking Jonny’s, Territorial Seed Company, and Hoss Tools(are we allowed to say that word here? 😂 JK). I was hoping for your opinion and maybe some suggestions on other places to purchase them.
I luv me some heirlooms don’t get me wrong. Until this yr they have always been my favorite tbh. However, this yr we have had some very abnormal weather. Large temp swings and over all much hotter and drier than usual. Long story short, my f1s did well to ok, while my heirlooms did ok to terribly. Especially my poor tomatoes. The heirlooms came out worse than store bought 😂
Any advice from you or your followers would be greatly appreciated, cheers!!!

For the hybrid tomatoes, I like to look at the breeders sites and then try to find someone online that sells that particular variety. For example, Sakata has some incredible hybrid tomato offerings. So I'll look at their pages and then try to find someone online selling it.

@@sloshflaunders4711 The big three as far as hybrid vegetables go IMO are Sakata (sakatavegetables.com), Syngenta (www.syngenta-us.com/crops/vegetabledetails), and Seminis (www.vegetables.bayer.com/us/en-us/products.html). Take a look at their offerings to find what you like, then find an online retailer that carries those varieties. Hope that helps.

We usually don't have any go to waste. We share the love and eat most all of it.
I no longer work there, so we're enjoying using seeds from a wide variety of suppliers.

They do. But the boys have spoiled them with kale and they seem to only want that now. lol

Travis- Pour 1 in fertilizer into a 2-3 in tall tray & let those seedlings soak it up from the bottom. That spraying is too tedious.
I recently ordered more bottom trays and will probably use those for fertilization purposes like you suggested.
Your not making dibbles when planting the seeds are dibbles not necessary when covering with perlite and Would you plant broccoli and cauliflower and cabbage the same way
I did make dibbles. I just didn't include that footage for the sake of keeping things moving. I always make dibbles.

When I was very small my mother planted squash and gourds too close together. They cross pollinated, which was a problem, as she saved her own seeds. The next year our squash was so bitter even the chickens refused it when she threw the cooked 'squash' out. They just slung their heads trying to get that bitter stuff out of their beaks.
Interesting. I wouldn't think they would cross since they are a different species.
@@LazyDogFarm Squash and gourds (along with pumpkins, which are simply a type of squash) are members of the Cucurbitaceae family of plants. If saving seeds, they need to be planted 1/4 mile from each other or plant on alternate years to avoid cross pollination.
@@1charlastar886 I knew they were in the same family. But usually they only cross-pollinate if they are the same species.
