    I am going to make cold frames. And for the lemon bushes, I need to make a tent for frosty nights. I will rip treated 2x4s to 2x2's but for the siding and roof, I need to find something to use. Later the three tents will be used for summer starts. What would you recommend for the shell? also, you might want to consider a shade cloth to roll up inside. Lots of places using green houses use them. Blessings, Russ

    Hi Travis I plan to get a greenhouse later, but for now I start my seedlings in my basement. It’s so nice outside so I decided to start my broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage outside 2 or 3 weeks ago they germinated fast but they don’t look like they are growing much should I bring them in or just wait? I’m not sure how long it takes them to get 3 or 4 inches tall this is the first time I’ve tried to grow these plants. Thanks for any information you can give I love your family and the videos you make together those boys are the cutest little guys ❤️

      Most transplants usually take about 5-6 weeks from seed to viable transplant that's ready to go in the ground. If they have true leaves (the second set of leaves), it's probably time to give them some fertilizer.

  • @suepatterson2702

You cracked me up discarding the area next to the compost bin because it wasn't level and would require too much dirt work, then later talking about the hills and undulations on your property. So funny how subjective words can be. My 5 acres north of Atlanta is considered to be level in our area- our hills and undulations have only a 40 ft variation in height. Many of my neighbors have much greater elevation changes.

    That's going to be a game changer! Glad for y'all! I'm not going to even touch the "pecan" thing, I'll just say we disagree! :) I know a guy near Montgomery who has a really cool setup that's stuck in my head for a while. He has a similar size greenhouse, but with a peak roof. He rigged a gutter system around three sides of the house, with a downspout that feeds a small catch basin he built. He uses an inexpensive electric sump pump that's equipped with a pvc "snorkel" attached to the pump, like what I use to water my garden, and he has it stepped down to attach a garden hose. He has a piece of pvc (don't remember the size, but not too big, probably 3/4" as that's standard "hose" size) with holes drilled in it, on both sides, that he runs down the peak of the roof. That pipe is plumbed female, to accept the hose as well. He fills the basin with clean water and turns on the pump and "waters" his roof. The runoff goes into the gutter, down the downspout and back into the basin, where it's recirculated. It's AMAZING how much cooler and more comfortable it is in that greenhouse!! I'm sure the plants like the extra humidity too. Really cool setup.....

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is brilliant. Gotta have the pitch for that to work though it seems.

    • @tommathews3964
      @tommathews3964 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LazyDogFarm It wouldn't take much. Water is going to always go downhill! The fall on the gutters is only a few inches over 24' and it flows fine. He's got gutter caps he snaps on in the winter to keep them clean. It's a low volume system, not a huge amount of water, but it doesn't take much to make a big difference.

    I was born in south ga so I talk like y’all. I married an AL man so that’s been my home for 38 years but I say spicot, pee-can, and all your south ga lingo. My mom aunts uncles etc all still live in Hahira, Lakeland, Valdosta. I am very excited about y’all getting a greenhouse. Mine is halfway built so hopefully will have it finished before too long. Me and my husband building on weekends for me. 8x16. So I will be looking forward to learning from you and Brooklyn. Would love for you to film the actual build and you setting it up. Thanks and happy gardening. 👩‍🌾☀️🌻🍅🌽

    I like that the 1 you're getting has tall straight sidewalls. 10x16 is a good size for starting transplants and should work out well for you. The 1 at Hoss seemed to work out well for your needs. I like the idea of getting a greenhouse and have the room for a 10x16 or even a bit larger. It's the use case that I haven't figured out yet. Spring seed starting would be 1 but at the time I start tomatoes and peppers, it's freezing outside. Heating a polytunnel when it's gets down to 0 F outside isn't practical. That leaves season extension as the main use and maybe a bit of seed starting in April.

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's tricky if you're way up north. But it could also be handy for succession planting if you do any of that. Having transplants ready to go at all times so you don't have to wait on in-ground germination.

    You made good choices there from start to finish. I built my 12' x 24' quonset hoop house from scratch but I wouldn't do it that way again. Labor intensive. Buy a good kit. I used 5 mm twin wall Solexx and prefer it to sheet poly. I use mine for everything out here in the Mountain West, but keeping it cool enough is the hard part. I've seen how you use your 162 flats and you'll soon be in the seedling business. Big round of applause. Greenhouse Megastore for online components.

    Enjoyed the video. I have two cattle panel houses 8’ x 15’ x 7’h. One I use to winter flowers in. The other to start seeds for transplants. The one I use for transplants I have an old tarp on the ground for weed suppression. Going to put a tarp in the other one need to clean it out and use some roundup. I was going to start some transplants this week but by what you said I may wait until the end of August. Any thoughts.

    Hey I just wanted to let you know if you go over to alumni acres and look at what he did on his greenhouse it will help you with yours also. He put in a turning bar on each side so when he needed to raise the sides for ventilation he just hooked his drill up to it and it rolled it up by itself the same thing to put it down it will make it so much easier.

    How do you keep the grass so far off your bushes (blueberries or blackberries looks like) to the right of the back side of the barn in the video? I cleared all the grass when I planted and we weedeat it regularly but it quickly grows back, even up through 4-6" of mulch. Please tell me your secret!! 🙂

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There were pine trees there prior to those fig trees being planted there. So there's never really been grass in those rows. The lawn mower tires keep it scuffed pretty well now so that the grass doesn't establish there.

    You cannot grow anything during the winter here in Minnesota without heating it, which would be about $1200/month, simply impractical for home gardening. Maybe extending the harvest of less cold sensitive veggies for three weeks isn't practical either or worth the investment.

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't have any experience with using tinted glass, so hard for me to say. I do know from biology classes that plants don't absorb green wavelengths of light, they reflect them. That's why plants are green. So that could be a potential issue.

      I cannot tell if it is a water oak or a laurel oak from your video. Either way it is a tree-shaped weed in my opinion -- short lived and constantly dropping limbs. Oh, and the laurel oaks drop half their leaves in the fall and the other half in the spring, so I'm raking the yard twice a year..

    Hey Travis and Brooklyn! Congratulations! Chickens and now greenhouse. Look forward to seeing gardening videos in the winter time as well!
    Travis, you should have talked to someone like Growers Solutions, etc and had them give you a free greenhouse. All of those other guys seem to be getting free green houses as a part of them discussing the green house and making an argument for the establishment of a greenhouse in the viewers gardens. I know that you do not like to push the vendors, but you are promoting some very important information to your subscribers. These guys also seem to get other stuff like trampolines, etc for their kids. I don’t see why Titus and Abram who are sooooo cute should not get fun stuff for free as well! You have a very very devoted audience, more so than many other channels. Just my 2 cents worth, not to imply that you cannot afford these things, but given the service you are providing, you should get these things sent to you. Take care and God bless.
