Great instructors, even better atmosphere for learning. That staff is TOP drawer! The classes are well worth the money. They have a gift of being able to make learning as enjoyable as it is effective!
Great video thank you.. I feel really stupid asking this, but is the choice between using hand held tools and conventional power tools a choice made by tradition or are they more practical? thanks
are slicks and hand planes somewhat or mostly interchangeable in the tasks they accomplish with timber framing or is there something that one can do significantly better than the other?
Adam Macke while they do perform similar tasks, the hand plane is designed to take a uniform, thin shaving from the surface of a piece of wood, the slick gives you a bit more freedom in terms of the amount of wood it can shave; you can take 1/32” in one area and dive deeper in another area. Also, the slick can be used inside a mortise to pare end and edge grain while a plane is difficult or impossible to use inside a mortise. The slick is our go-to tool for perfecting joinery, while a plane excels at a few (perhaps simpler?) tasks.
It completely depends on what you will be doing with it. We really like 1-7/8" or anything under 2" because many of the mortises we cut are 2" wide. If you will be working with wider mortises or space in general than a wider slick may make more sense
Jon Smith it is known as a Japanese boatbuilders slick.....they are made by craftsmen in Japan who apprentice for years. There isn’t a brand, but rather a handful of names of masters.

Always great to hear details from women
I’ve had my veritas honing guide for 16yrs now. It’s a fantastic bit of kit and puts a razor edge on my sorby chisel set using a diamond stone.
So glad I found you folks, many thanks.
Very much looking forward to completing the online course.
Nice! I've been looking forward to part 3.
Great video! You both look great!
Let me guess; You're American ?
You can use hairspray to keep a socket handle on a chisel.. I know it sounds crazy but it works👍😊

Which size of the slick would you reccomend?
Robert Sorby are Sheffield company.
Sheffield is the home of steel in the UK.
Stainless steel was invented there.
We use Robert Sorby a lot, probably our longest running chisel supplier

Are there any videos of them using these tools?
Is there an advantage to using slicks instead of planes on tenons?
A slick is generally faster, it comes down to user preference though.
Why do you recommend a bevel edge for a mortise chisel?
Wait just a moment !! little confused here , what's the difference between slick & temper chisel ?? or different names for one tool ??
Hi. What width slick is "best"? 2 1/4 good?
